    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There was a time when English players were reluctant to leave their Premier League comfort zone, but more and more are now spreading their wings. Manchester United legend David Beckham helped to set that trend back in 2003, when he left Old Trafford for Real Madrid, and Kane is delighted to be following the lead of a modern day icon.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Kane has told of the reasons for his switch to Bayern: “Maybe my journey here can be an inspiration for the younger [English] players to do the same and take that step. I remember David Beckham making the move from Manchester United to Real Madrid. I was a kid and I was like, 'Wow, what an amazing experience.' Maybe I took Beckham as an example. I always wanted to see a different league, a different atmosphere. So far everything is going very well: on and off the pitch. I admired Robert Lewandowski when he was a young player, he took a fantastic path and set incredible records. I want to reach his level, and maybe even better.”

will look to return to winning ways in the domestic league after losing 3-2 to Villarreal at the Bernabeu last weekend. They trail leaders Barcelona by 13 points and with just 10 rounds to go it will be rather improbable for them to retain La Liga crown.

Cadiz have avoided defeat in three of their last five matches against Real Madrid in La Liga (W1 D2 L2) and at the Mirandilla they will fancy their chances once again. They are four points off the relegation zone and if they are able to snatch even a point from the Spanish giants it will be decisive for them.

But they must remain wary of Vinicius Junior, who has been involved in four goals for Real Madrid in his last four La Liga games (two goals and two assists). Moreover, Real Madrid have mustered the most shots on target this season (173) while Cadiz have had the fewest in the competition (80).

The records Ronaldo can break at Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo's career is littered with broken records but after his move to Serie A giants Juventus, he is primed to shatter even more

Sami Khedira1First player to be top scorer in EPL, La Liga & Serie ABoth John Charles and Christian Vieri have topped the scoring charts in two of Europe's 'Big Five' leagues. Welsh legend Charles was the English First Divison's leading marksman with Leeds in 1957 and then repeated the feat in Italy the following year after joining Juventus. Vieri, meanwhile, claimed La Liga's Pichichi award in 1998, after a stellar season at Atletico Madrid, before finishing as Serie A's Capocannoniere in 2002-03 for Inter. However, Ronaldo is now poised to outdo them both. Having already top-scored in the Premier League for United in 2007-08 and taken home the Pichichi on three occasions (2010-11, 2013-14, 2014-15), he can now become the first man to be the leading goalscorer in the EPL, La Liga and Serie A.AdvertisementGetty Images2Most hat-tricks in Serie AThis particular record might even be beyond Ronaldo but this is not a man who lacks ambition. Also, he specialises in hat-tricks. As a result, perhaps it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could surpass Gunnar Nordahl and Giuseppe Meazza's haul of 17 trebles apiece. Ronaldo would first need to stay in Turin for the duration of his four-year contract and then average just over four hat-tricks a season. If anyone can, Ronaldo can…David Ramos3Most Champions League hat-tricksBoth Ronaldo and Messi have racked up a staggering seven Champions League hat-tricks to date. Given his remarkable recent scoring rate in the competition, Ronaldo will be confident of edging ahead of the Barcelona ace for new club Juve. ENJOYED THIS STORY?

4Most goals in all competitions for JuventusNetting more than 36 goals in Serie A alone would also see Ronaldo become Juventus' record scorer across a single season in all competitions. Ferenc Herzer currently tops the standings, having struck 35 times during the 1925-26 campaign.

The squad also supplied the majority of the Australian Test team. Our challenge now is to build on this momentum, to defend the Matador Cup and win the Sheffield Shield.”New South Wales squad Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Ryan Carters, Harry Conway, Trent Copeland, Ed Cowan, Pat Cummins (Cricket Australia contract), Ben Dwarshuis, Ryan Gibson, Josh Hazlewood (CA), Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Josh Lalor, Nick Larkin, Jay Lenton, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, Arjun Nair, Peter Nevill (CA), Steve O’Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Ben Rohrer, Gurinder Sandhu, Steven Smith (CA), Will Somerville, Mitchell Starc (CA), David Warner (CA).

Hopes four-for rolls Tasmania over

Joe Burns scored 68 in an opening partnership worth 124 to underpin a collective bowling performance led by James Hopes, as Queensland, having opted to bowl, took charge in Hobart.Hopes’ four-for and supporting hands from debutant right-arm seamer Mark Steketee and legspinner Cameron Boyce helped Queensland skittle Tasmania for 149 in 46.3 overs. Hopes removed Ed Cowan and captain Alex Doolan for ducks, before dismissing Tim Paine and Luke Butterworth off successive balls in the 37th over.Jordan Silk resisted briefly through 39 off 80 balls, while Ben Dunk counterattacked to lend some respectability to the innings. Dunk cracked four fours and four sixes in scoring 71 at close to a run a ball, before he was stumped by Cameron Boyce.Dunk, though, lacked substantial assistance from the other end, with as many as seven Tasmania batsmen failing to move into double figures. In reply, Burns and Charlie Hemphrey gave Queensland a strong start. The stand ended when left-arm seamer Sam Rainbird had Burns caught behind in the 36th over. Two overs later, Peter Forrest was pinned lbw by Jackson Bird for 1, but Hemphrey remained unbeaten on 47, and Queensland finished the opening day on 2 for 135, trailing by 14.

Rampant Kings XI storm into semi-finals

Kings XI Punjab walloped Northern Knights by 120 runs to storm into the semi-finals of the CLT20 with three wins in three

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran26-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
In 11 innings for Kings XI Punjab this year, Manan Vohra has reached at least 25 on ten occasions•BCCI

If you wanted to see how diverse Twenty20 games get, you should have got yourself a ticket to the double-header in Mohali on Friday. First the Barbados Tridents and Cape Cobras played out a Super Over thriller, after which Kings XI Punjab walloped Northern Knights by 120 runs – the biggest win in six seasons of the CLT20 – to storm into the semi-finals.Kings XI lived up to their billing as a bunch of power-hitters as batsman after batsman clouted boundary after boundary to run up a total of 215. The openers Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag set the tone with a high-octane 102-run stand, with David Miller rounding off the innings with an 18-ball 40. Knights’ biggest strength was their new-ball opening pair, but Trent Boult and Tim Southee had combined figures of 8-0-93-0 on the day.In the face of a massive target, Knights’ batting rolled over for 95. Only someone desperate to “take the positive out of it” would point to it being a marginal improvement over the 92 Knights folded for in their previous game. Knights captain Daniel Flynn was more forthright, “We got found out today,” was his assessment. At no stage of the game were Kings XI second best. Vohra began with successive boundaries in the first over, showing the same irresistable form that has fetched him ten scores of 25 or more in the 11 innings since he got his chance midway through the IPL season. All through, he has shown that he isn’t fazed by the quality of the opposition bowlers, and today was no different as Boult and Southee couldn’t find a way past his made-for-Twenty20 batting.Vohra outpaced Sehwag during their stand and Kings XI’s run-rate never dipped below 10. Sehwag revealed he had promised to give Vohra one of his bats if the 21-year-old hit a century. Vohra was zooming towards the mark, with consecutive sixes off Ish Sodhi taking him to 65 as early as the ninth over. The third ball was short, and seemed set to go over the rope once more, but Vohra picked out deep midwicket. After the game, Sehwag hoped Vohra would get the bat next match. There was a brief lull after that wicket, but Sehwag powered on to his half-century before Miller took over. He caned Scott Styris for 19 in the penultimate over to bring up the 200 as Kings XI showed that even with Glenn Maxwell, Thisara Perera and George Bailey only making small contributions they could still post a mammoth total. “We ticked off the KPIs (key performance indicators) as a batting group,” Bailey said.Knights never looked like they had the necessary firepower for the chase, even with the inclusion of an extra batsman in Daniel Harris. What slim chances they had became even slimmer once Kane Williamson departed attempting a ramp shot, and Anton Devcich was caught off a reverse-sweep. Maxwell’s direct hit ran out the experienced Styris, before the spinners took over on a surface providing them a little help. Legspinner Karanveer Singh picked up four as Knights’ lower order keeled over without a fight, leaving them with a horrendous net run-rate which virtually rules them out of the semi-final race.

Philander targets new-ball damage

South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander believes the key to succeeding in Sri Lankan conditions lies in picking up wickets while the ball is still new. Philander, on his first Test tour of Sri Lanka, feels that seam bowlers can fetch wickets in spin-friendly surfaces by maintaining a simple off-stump line and making the batsmen play.”The more damage you can do with the new ball the better,” Philander said on Monday in Galle two days before the first Test. “You want batsmen five, six and seven batting against a newish nut. In these conditions you want to be striking with the new ball, our lines upfront need to get the batsmen to play.”I wouldn’t really say that lengths change, its more the line of attack. You need to sit on that off-stump line, and make sure you get the lbw into the game, the wider ball becomes the nick-off. Hopefully we can adjust really quickly and assess conditions accordingly.”Philander said he had recovered from the viral infection that ruled him out of the third ODI in Hambantota on Saturday. If he makes the starting XI, it will be his first Test in the subcontinent. Since his Test debut in 2011, Philander has played the majority of his 23 Tests at home in South Africa and toured England, Australia and New Zealand. He played two Tests in the UAE last year – his first Test series in Asia – where he picked up six wickets in two games.Spinners have performed well in Galle but Philander was hopeful of getting some swing, given the occasional showers.”There is a bit of moisture and overhead conditions around which will favour the swing bowlers,” he said. “We have to wait and see what the deck looks like tomorrow and on the morning of the Test.”Philander was also confident his team would be able to negate the threat of Sri Lanka’s lead spinner Rangana Herath, who has 48 wickets at this ground, the second-highest behind Muttiah Muralitharan (111).”Spin is always a factor when you come to the subcontinent. That’s why they prepare wickets to suit their bowlers,” Philander said. “He (Herath) is going to be a big threat, but our batsmen played him quite well in the last one-dayer in Hambantota, so hopefully we can continue to do so. I’d like to see our guys stepping up against the spinners and playing them to the best of their abilities.”
