Transfer Focus: Leeds fans shouldn’t be surprised by Pearce departure

[ad_pod ]

A Yorkshire Evening Post article written by Phil Hay has confirmed that Leeds United are willing to listen to offers for Tom Pearce.

Pearce spent the second half of last season out on loan at Scunthorpe who were eventually relegated from League One.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their surprise about Pearce’s imminent departure as many fans rated his ability at left-back.

Surprised

On social media a lot of fans were shocked that Pearce would be leaving the club this summer.

The Englishman did look like he was going to be the understudy at full-back following the 2017/18 season, but Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival has seen him have limited first-team chances.

The fact that he is just 21 years of age had many fans believing that he would get his chance in the future, but it looks like his Elland Road career is over.

Shouldn’t be a shock

It’s baffling that so many Whites fans didn’t see this one coming. Pearce didn’t even impress whilst on loan at a struggling Scunthorpe.

He made just nine appearances for the Iron before they were relegated to League Two.

With the abundance of left-backs Leeds have at their disposal it really should have been clear that Pearce would be on his way this summer.

There is an argument to be made that he would be the fifth choice in that position if he returned to the Yorkshire club – behind Ezgjan Alioski, Barry Douglas, Stuart Dallas and Leif Davis.

Of course, he may turn out to be a good player one day, but surely this was one of the most obvious departures from Elland Road this summer.

Shay Given teases James Milner on Instagram

This post prompted Shay Given to respond teasing his former teammate.

The pairing, who played together at Newcastle United and Manchester City, are close with each other and Given will no doubt be hoping the Leeds-born midfielder can win his first major European title to go with his two Premier Leagues.

The Liverpool squad are currently going through warm-weather-training as Jurgen Klopp prepares his side for their second European Final under his guidance.

Milner was captain on the night when Liverpool lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the Europa League Final three-years-ago. His experience of major games and performing under pressure will be vital if Liverpool are to come away with the Champions League for the first time since 2005.

The 33-year-old is also an expert penalty taker, scoring five this season so, if the final goes all-the-way, you can guarantee he will step up and take a spot-kick for his side.

Signed on a free four-years-ago Milner has been a superb signing and, if he can lift the Champions League, surely his already high-standing in the game will sky-rocket.

The Verdict: Should Rangers break their transfer record to land Ryan Kent?

[ad_pod ]

Rangers will reportedly have to cough up a whopping £12million to land Ryan Kent permanently this summer.

According to The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool want upwards of £12m for Kent, while Steven Gerrard has said in the past that he would like to keep the Liverpool loanee and various pundits have added to the links.

The young winger has been a big hit in Glasgow, setting up the winning goal in December’s Old Firm and racking up six goals and nine assists in total.

Anything above £12m would of course break the club-record signing of Tore Andre Flo, so we asked the writers at Football FanCast if Kent is worth smashing that record for. Here’s what they said…

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

James Beavis

“If that is the price then Rangers should steer well clear. Yes, the 22-year-old has made a decent impact at Ibrox this season, but I believe the Gers could get a similar player for a much smaller fee. Signing Kent won’t determine Rangers’ 2019/20 season, and it shouldn’t be Gerrard’s priority. He needs to build a sturdier defence first given he already has Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe up top.”

Billy Meyers

“Certainly not. £12m is a lot of money to a club like Rangers, and there are areas more in need on reinforcement away from in attack. Ryan Kent also hasn’t done enough to merit such a fee, but with Liverpool now a savvy club in the market, it will be tough to knock them down on their valuation of the young winger. If they can get him back on loan, then that’ll be fine, but with just six goals to his name this season, that money can be better spent elsewhere.”

Matt Dawson

“I’d be incredibly surprised if Rangers went ahead with a £12m deal for Kent, especially considering it would match their transfer record. Under the guidance of Steven Gerrard it would be fascinating to see where his long term development goes though, and after a series of loan spells away from Liverpool, a permanent move could be exactly what Kent needs. For me, such a large outlay on one player would be a risk and they’d be better off using it elsewhere if they’re to stand any chance of matching Celtic next year.”

Latest Chelsea showing shows the big need for club to have transfer ban overturned: Opinion

Chelsea were seen off with relative ease this weekend by Liverpool as the Reds moved closer to securing a first Premier League title.

It was a decent enough showing in parts for the Blues, but they ultimately came up short following a well taken goal by Sadio Mane and a stunning second half strike from Mo Salah sealing the deal at Anfield.

There was much to be admired about the Chelsea display and but for a bit of luck in front of goal, Eden Hazard could and maybe should have brought them level moments after going two down.

However, there was also elements of the display which highlighted the need for the club to bring in new faces in the summer if they can, and while Christian Pulisic is already a done deal for the club, their impending transfer ban could well ruin any other plans they might have.

There is an obvious need for a central striker in the Chelsea squad, with Gonzalo Higuain not exactly pulling up many trees during his loan spell.

The future of Eden Hazard too remains unresolved, and it could be worrying times for the Blues if they do lose Hazard and are forced into not being able to make new additions.

Ageing defenders too are also an issue, with the likes of Luiz and Azpilicueta probably past their best, and in midfield, both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley have thus far failed to make a real stamp on the first XI under Mauro Sarri.

There are plenty of questions left to be answered of course, but it is certainly a time when Chelsea will be hoping for a bit of luck in their pursuit of success.

Hodgson admits every player has their price, even Zaha and Wan-Bissaka

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace have two of the Premier League’s best non-top-six stars in Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Roy Hodgson surely understands how important it is to retain the duo’s services this summer if possible.

The former England boss made a big admission ahead of the trip to Tottenham on Wednesday night though.

With a number of top clubs circling both the electric winger and the battling right-back, the Eagles will have some job on their hands come the end of the season to try and keep the duo for the 2019/20 campaign – the lure of big money and, in some cases, Champions League football has proved irresistible to many in a similar position before.

Hodgson appreciates how important keeping his star players is but, no matter how crucial they are, he admits that every player has a price. The Premier League’s oldest manager had this to say about the sought-after pair:

“The club is certainly in no way advertising [Zaha and Wan-Bissaka] and or promoting them as saleable objects. We would be more than happy to keep them.

“But we just have to remain realistic and see what happens. If offers come in they will obviously be assessed, like everything else.

“As I heard Manuel Pellegrini quite rightly say the other day [when discussing Declan Rice’s future]: every football player does have a price.”

Palace will surely accept nothing less than £40m for Wan-Bissaka while £50m plus seems more realistic for Zaha – sums which would go a long way to developing the club as a whole if they were accepted.

However, the problem with selling star players is that no matter how much you spend to replace them, there is no guarantee those replacements will be up to scratch, so Eagles fans should be very worried about the gaffer’s admission.

Let us know in the comments below, Palace fans, how much you think the pair are worth together.

Liverpool’s title-challenge is getting stronger all the time

Jurgen Klopp surely has the advantage in the title race following the return of a host of key players from injury.

The much-anticipated arrival of central defender Joe Gomez will provide the biggest boost for Jurgen Klopp who, according to the Mirror, is due back March.

Gomez, who has been out for nearly three months with a hairline fracture to his leg, had formed a formidable partnership with Virgil Van Dijk in the centre of defence, helping Liverpool to the best defensive record in the league before his untimely absence.

Although Fabinho and Joel Matip have been very capable replacements, and Liverpool still find themselves in the running for two major competitions, missing Gomez has created a bit of a dilemma for Klopp, especially with other key players missing due to less serious injuries.

The defender’s return would free up the now accomplished Premier League player Fabinho to make an impact in midfield, as originally intended.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been another huge loss for Liverpool, having been missing since last year.

The dynamic midfielder looked immense in his new midfield role before his injury and is as far, as we’re concerned, a more viable option than Naby Keita, who’s really failed to acclimatise to the demands of English football.

Of course, he won’t have an immediate impact, given the seriousness of his injury, but to have the option will be huge for Klopp.

Dejan Lovren, who claimed to be one of the ‘best defenders in the world’ despite being anything but, is also making his return (Sky Sports). However, with so many decent options ahead of him, he’ll likely see out his days as a fringe player at Liverpool.

You need only look at the impact of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made three assists in Liverpool’s drubbing of Bournemouth of Wednesday night, to understand how important some of the returning players are to the Reds’ campaign. Advantage Liverpool.

Over to you, Manchester City.

Jordan Rhodes is amongst Wednesday’s worst ever buys

Sheffield Wednesday have never been a club to spend big.

Perhaps that’s a symptom of such a long spell away from English football’s top table, but the point still stands that the Owls have been hesitant to splash the cash over the years.

With transfer fees becoming more and more ridiculous year on year, and eight-figure transfer expenditures have become commonplace in the Championship, but Sheffield Wednesday have only broke that barrier once in their history.

Unfortunately, their biggest financial outlay of all time massively backfired.

Jordan Rhodes was the man the Owls felt was worthy of spending such a huge amount on, and you can understand why.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Scot garnered something of a reputation for being one of the Championship’s most prolific marksmen after netting more than 20 goals on two separate occasions for Blackburn Rovers.

The Owls initially loaned Rhodes from Middlesbrough, and he didn’t get off to the best of starts, netting just three goals in 18 appearances.

Unfortunately, the terms of the loan meant the Steel City outfit were obliged to pay £10m for his services on a permanent basis at the end of the season, and unfortunately, that didn’t see an upturn in form.

He’s scored just eight league goals since Carlos Carvalhal parted with £10m for him, working out at £1.25m per goal.

He was loaned out to Norwich last term, and the Canaries weren’t willing to make a suitable offer to keep him on due to another lacklustre campaign.

For now, he’s back at Hillsborough, but he’s nowhere near the top of the striking pecking order, playing just 499 minutes this season.

It’s sad to say it, but the Owls’ club-record signing has to be considered one of their biggest flops of all time, and despite the fact he’s still at the club, it’s hard to see him ever justifying his transfer fee.

In other news, selling this man was one of Wednesday’s biggest blunders.
