Barry Fry gives take on Mourinho exit

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry insists Jose Mourinho was always going to be sacked by Tottenham Hotspur because of his style of football, telling Football FanCast that it was “only a matter of time”.

Spurs fired the Portuguese last week and replaced him temporarily with Ryan Mason, who will manage the team until the end of the season.

Spurs were seventh when Mourinho was sacked and had won one game in six, while also tumbling out of the Europa League as a result of a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

Mason was subsequently in charge for the Carabao Cup final, though Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Wembley.

Mourinho oversaw a terrible run of form and he also sidelined a number of players, including Dele Alli, Harry Winks, and Gareth Bale.

Fry thinks that the former Manchester United boss has been too negative in both of his most recent jobs, in north London and at Old Trafford, and he was left unsurprised that chairman Daniel Levy took the decision to sack him.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Fry said: “He picks fights with players, unnecessarily in my opinion. He plays too negative.

“He might be the best tactician the world’s ever known but Manchester United fans and Tottenham fans do not want to see their teams play the way he plays with them, especially with the attacking players both those teams have got.

“They want to see their team going forward, entertaining, scoring goals, that’s what they’ve been brought up on, that’s what they want, so it was only a matter of time before he left.”

Celtic: Laxalt endures Old Firm shocker

This season has been a disastrous state of affairs for Celtic and if anything typified that, it would be the Bhoys’ defeat on Sunday.

Having already been usurped by their biggest rivals in the league, the Hoops were left to rue shambolic defending and poor finishing as they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup.

Does that sound familiar? Of course it does. Time and time again this term we’ve witnessed defensive mistakes let the manager and indeed the club’s supporters down.

We’ve also seen a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal. That was perfectly summed up when Benjamin Siegrist made 12 saves in a 0-0 draw with Dundee United.

On this occasion, everything went wrong again as they suffered a 2-0 defeat in the fourth round to Rangers.

Odsonne Edouard missed a simple chance in the second half from a matter of yards out and then saw his spot-kick saved later on. A good chance for Moi Elyounoussi also went begging after the break.

Though, had they been better from a defensive point of view they wouldn’t have been left chasing their tails.

John Kennedy must have been left fuming with his two full-backs; Jonjoe Kenny and Diego Laxalt.

The duo were described as “abysmal” by The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin and it was clear to see why. Kenny reacted too slowly for the opener and then struggled to track the run of Ryan Kent for the second, diverting the ball into his own net.

Unfortunately, it was Laxalt who was considerably worse. The Uruguay international has been rather inconsistent this season and this match summarised perfectly why the Hoops shouldn’t be lusting after a £7.2m permanent switch.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

As Rangers broke forward down the right for Steve Davis’ opening strike, Laxalt wasn’t even in the frame. He vacated his role down the left and Steven Gerrard’s men were able to profit.

When the ball was finally swept home, Laxalt was standing in the centre of the pitch just outside the penalty area.

Speaking in his half-time show on the A Celtic State of Mind channel, Paul John Dykes said he was “horrifically out of position” and “nowhere to be seen.”

Though, Laxalt was worse for the second goal. Joe Aribo got down the right again and then led the left-back a merry dance. The Rangers winger produced a tremendous piece of trickery that sold the Uruguayan completely.

Aribo then whipped a ball in which Kent managed to divert home with the aid of Kenny.

John Harton was scathing in his assessments during Premier Sports’ live coverage of the match. The former Celtic striker said it was “such a poor attempt” at trying to mark Aribo for the second.

He then claimed it was a “horror first half” from Laxalt, suggesting he “does nothing.”

With his woeful opening 45 minutes in mind, it was not a surprise to see him dragged off at half-time in favour of Greg Taylor.

Perhaps the £57k-per-week earner ought to be dropped for good next time out.

LFC fans don’t want Reds to sign Konate

A number of Liverpool supporters don’t want the Reds to sign Ibrahima Konate due to the defender’s injury history, after it was revealed that RB Leipzig will expect the full sum up front for a move to happen.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to make at least one centre-back addition at the end of the season, in order to freshen up that area of the pitch after a campaign riddled with issues there.

Ozan Kabak could possibly join permanently after impressing on loan, but it could be that another central defender also makes the move to Anfield.

Both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip seem to pick up injuries at a worrying rate, while Virgil van Dijk will be returning from cruciate ligament damage.

Someone who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool is Konate, having caught the eye for RB Leipzig in recent times.

The 21-year-old has an injury history of his own, however, which is putting a number of a fans off the idea of him heading to Merseyside, following fresh reports over his future.

Moyes drops hint on possible future West Ham appointment

Speaking to football.london, West Ham United boss David Moyes has dropped an exciting hint that club legend Mark Noble could potentially become a part of the staff after his retirement – going on to say he has ‘no doubt’ that the Englishman’s future will be somewhere with the Hammers.

Noble, who will be set for his 400th Premier League appearance if he plays against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon at the London Stadium, has been a mainstay for the Irons since making his debut in 2004.

Moyes drops exciting hint on possible Noble appointment

A product of the club’s youth academy, the 33-year-old has made 523 appearances for the club in all competitions over a near 17-year stay so far (Transfermarkt), with Noble recently announcing that next season will indeed be his last after signing a one-year extension (BBC).

Much speculation has arisen over whether he will continue at West Ham in an off field role past his retirement, with reliable club insider ExWHUemployee recently claiming ‘there is talk’ he would be given a ‘coaching role or some ambassadorial role’ (West Ham Way Podcast).

Now, Moyes has come out with his take on the situation, dropping an exciting hint that Noble could well be appointed as future West Ham staff in some capacity.

“I do see Mark [Noble] becoming part of the staff in the future,” explained the Scotsman (via football.london).

“While he is still playing well and contributing on that side of it we want him in that area.

“But I have no doubt Mark’s future career will be somewhere at West Ham, what that exactly is I don’t know but I have no doubt he will be in and around the club.”

Transfer Tavern take

Given all he has contributed over his plethora of West Ham appearances in the last decade, appointing someone with great knowledge and experience of the club seems like a no brainer.

His son is also apparently part of the Irons academy, giving him all the more reason to stay in east London and possibly become a big part of the coaching team behind the scenes.

As West Ham club staff possibly keep their eye out for another Noble-esque talent who can serve the club over a great period of longevity, hiring the beloved midfielder in a non-playing role after his retirement could be a wise decision.

The decision will rest with the player himself, however, and Hammers supporters are surely hoping he remains a servant of the club long after he hangs up his boots.

Klopp must start Chamberlain vs Man City

Liverpool will undoubtedly be reeling from their shock defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out in the Premier League. The Reds struggled immensely to make any sort of impact in the final third and as such, Robert Sanchez had quite an easy evening.

The Seagulls scraped through with a gargantuan three points thanks to a goal from Steven Alzate to go ahead just after half-time. Liverpool suffered the defeat on home soil, breaking the myth that Anfield is, and will remain a fortress.

Attention now shifts to their next league hurdle. The reigning champions will take on the season’s leaders in Manchester City and it will be a juicy watch for the neutrals.

Pep Guardiola and his men are unbeaten in their last 20 matches and have won the last 13 in a row, according to Sofascore. They are in blistering form despite not having Sergio Aguero and will be hungry to further upset Liverpool and their reigning season as champions.

After losing three of their last five fixtures, the Reds will be desperate to make a swift comeback against rivals City. But to do so, Klopp must reconsider the options he fielded against Brighton.

Starting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a bold but strong move from the German gaffer. The loss against Brighton showed that Liverpool rapidly ran out of options when it came to their creativity. According to Sofascore, Gini Wijnaldum had a poor performance in midfield, managing just 36 touches before he was hauled off the pitch. This is less than Caoimhin Kelleher put in, which is a concerning stat for a creative midfielder.

Indeed, Wijnaldum looked a shadow of the man who showed up against West Ham to grab himself one of Liverpool’s three goals.

For this reason, Klopp must consider his options and start the more elusive Oxlade-Chamberlain. The England international enjoys taking a crack at goal from outside the box, which could be exactly what the Reds need to thwart Guardiola’s tight defence.

The £21.6million-rated midfielder scored a goal of this nature against City before now. His wonder strike back in 2018 in the Champions League is undoubtedly one of his career highlights and arguably one of the goals of the competition.

The former Gunners ace has the raw pace and power of a winger, but brings it into a more central area, and that directness is what saw him average more shots and key passes than the Dutchman in the Premier League last season.

Having someone who can take a player on and beat them with a quick change of direction when defenders are camped back could be game-changing, with others having to desperately come back in and leaving their own man open. And then, you’ve got Oxlade-Chamberlain’s blistering pace to consider if Liverpool win the ball back and look to counter themselves.

If Klopp deploys the 27-year-old over Wijnaldum on Sunday, he has more chance of Liverpool finding their past a City side that has conceded just two goals in their last ten fixtures. It could be a real game-changer for the Reds.

Exclusive: Pundit drops Tottenham transfer claim on Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff

Rob Lee has exclusively told Football FanCast that Sean Longstaff should forget about a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur and focus on enjoying his time with Newcastle United.

The former Magpies midfielder believes Longstaff has fallen from the heights supporters saw of the academy product following his graduation under Rafa Benitez in 2018, and must focus on regaining his form before even considering a route out of Tyneside.

Longstaff has been linked with a potential switch to Jose Mourinho’s Spurs by the Daily Mail after changing his agent to be represented by Pini Zahavi, who is said to have told those close to the 23-year-old that he can orchestrate a deal.

Zahavi is known as ‘Mr Fix It’ for his record of brokering deals for players, including current Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who rejected interest from Everton to ensure he would join Mourinho’s squad from Southampton in the summer.

Alex Telles, who left FC Porto for Manchester United this summer, is another of Zahavi’s clients, alongside FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Robert Lewandowski.

Lee would urge Longstaff to be cautious over following Hojbjerg and Telles in allowing Zahavi to broker a deal, as the Toon talent would only be left on the bench at Tottenham.

“If you’ve got an agent like that, then sometimes maybe you get pushed into things, doing things that maybe you shouldn’t do. I don’t know who his agent was before. I don’t know why he left his agent, but it just seems, maybe you get carried away with who is Pini Zahavi and what players he’s got and how he’s moved them,” Lee told Football FanCast.

“It doesn’t always work for me. Yeah, he’s played 30-odd games, done well, [but] hasn’t hit the heights he hit when he first come in this year, maybe that’s because the teams not playing well. He’s had a couple of little knocks and I just think you have to sometimes forget about all that and just get on and enjoy playing football.

“It seems that kids have so much more on their mind now about moving and cars and houses and just enjoy playing football. It goes so quick. I tell my sons to enjoy it at whatever level you’re playing because it goes so quick. And you want to be playing regardless.

“There’s no point him going to Spurs or Man United and not playing, what’s the point? The idea you become a footballer is to play football, you enjoy football, you want to play football and for me, once he’s played 100 games and he’s played at a great level and scored goals and knocked on the England door, then if you want to move and you feel Newcastle isn’t the place for you then do it then.”

Longstaff has been linked with a switch to north London before after Spurs scouted the 23-year-old amid their search for depth in the engine room, with young up-and-comers seen as their best bet to solve an area that had needed attention for a few years.

Whether they decide to pursue a deal in the New Year remains to be seen, while Longstaff – who Manchester United were quoted £50million for last year – is believed to be keen on staying at St. James’ Park where discussions over a new contract are expected to begin soon.

AND in other news, Mike Ashley must block Steve Bruce from making a knee-jerk decision on an “instrumental” Newcastle gem.
