Gers fans slam Sportscene coverage

Glasgow Rangers fans are far from happy with coverage from the BBC’s Sportscene programme following their victory in the Premiership on Wednesday.

The Gers defeated Hibernian 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alfredo Morelos. All in all, it was a convincing performance from the Ibrox outfit, who dominated possession and had more opportunities than their opponents (SofaScore). The win sees them remain 23 points clear at the top of the table with just 12 games left to play (BBC).

However, the coverage from Sportscene was far from fair towards the 54-time Scottish champions according to their supporters. They believe the pundits were more complimentary to Hibs despite the Gers being the better side.

This view was initially shared by Rangers TV commentator Tom Miller (@TomCommentator) on Twitter, and the fans let their feelings be known as they responded in droves, which you can see below.

What did Gers fans say about the coverage?

“Of course they did, bitter biased disgrace of a channel.”

“Bewildering. It really needs sorted out. As does Crockers pursuit of Alfredo.”

“Best not to bother watching it. BBC Scotland is guilty of anti Rangers bias and everyone knows it.”

“Hardly surprised Tom. It’s the official haters of Rangers channel after all.”

“The agendas, excuses and hate is building now it’s virtually in the bag. But that means we are back on top so let them carry on”

Exclusive: Pundit drops Southampton claim about Jisheng Gao

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former England international Rob Lee has claimed Saints chairman Jisheng Gao and a missed opportunity at Southampton.

Lee is clearly impressed with the job that Ralph Hasenhuttl has done with the South Coast club in recent seasons and suggests that the club should be backing the Austrian in the transfer market, to help them push on even further.

Southampton appointed the 53-year-old in December 2018, and he has helped transform the Saints from potential relegation candidates into European hopefuls this season, as they currently sit fifth in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

Here’s what Lee had to say about Hasenhuttl when speaking exclusively to FFC…

“The thing it depends on is the owner. If you were a Southampton fan or a football fan, and you saw him long term at Southampton, then you have to do that [back him in the transfer window], because he’s done an unbelievable job.

“They got smashed 9-0 [just over] a year ago, and everyone thought he was going to be sacked. They are good to watch, they score goals, and I think he’s got some awesome players.

“Ward-Prowse has come on leaps and bounds. If you look at the players they’ve sold over the last 10 years, it’s been unbelievable.

“They’re still competing and they’re competing very well this year. They’re not going to be anywhere near the bottom. If anybody is playing against Southampton now, they know that they’re in for a game, they know that they could beat them.

“Again, talking about owners, if the owners think ‘I’m fed up of this’, then he’s not going to really invest money for him, so it depends on who runs the club.”

Lee seems to credit Gao for not rushing into a decision over Hasenhuttl when the Saints were thrashed by Leicester City last year, in a result that saw them drop into the relegation zone.

However, he also suggests that the Austrian manager should be backed financially in the upcoming transfer window as if he is allowed to strengthen his squad, there is no telling where this Southampton side could end up.

Considering Hasenhuttl has been touted as a potential replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, Gao and the other members of the Southampton board should definitely consider backing the 53-year-old in the winter transfer window, as that could prove to be a huge factor in whether or not he wants to stay should another side come knocking.

And, in other news… Final piece of the jigsaw: Hasenhuttl set to be handed a huge boost with club decision on £70k-p/w leader

Carlo Ancelotti may have revived Everton ace Bernard

Despite arriving back in the summer of 2018 when Marco Silva was still Everton manager, Bernard has struggled to really nail down a first-team spot at Goodison Park.

The Brazil international has generally been on the fringes of things, showing flashes of brilliance here and there, but never really with any impressive consistency.

All in all, he’s played 66 times for the Toffees, scoring just five goals and providing six assists – in fact, it says a lot about how frustrating the 28-year-old has been, that he’s actually earned more yellow cards than what he’s contributed on the pitch (7).

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But with Carlo Ancelotti’s magic touch at Goodison seemingly sparking a revival on the blue half of Merseyside, Bernard could finally begin to flourish. And whilst a Carabao Cup second round tie against Salford is hardly the measuring stick, and any excitement should be tempered, the Brazilian did produce a very fine performance on Wednesday night.

Though he didn’t score or set up a goal, his overall display was brimming with creativity and energy, and it would have left Ancelotti surely impressed.

He looked as lively as he has ever been in an Everton shirt, boasting a 100% success rate with his dribbles, and providing a whopping seven key passes – the latter stat almost representing half his team’s entire total (16).

Bernard also kept possession really well, rarely wasting the ball and making sure things were kept moving. He had 95 touches and completed 75 passes on the night, at a laser-like accuracy of 94% – the joint-best amongst Everton players.

Given the Toffees’ superb 1-0 win over Tottenham in the opening Premier League game of the season, Ancelotti won’t be too tempted to ring changes to his starting line-up when they take on West Brom on Saturday.

But Bernard’s display in mid-week has just given the Italian some food for thought, and the way he has breathed new life into the man signed by Silva, could see the Toffees finally see the best of the little Brazilian.

Who is Ferran Torres? – Profile

Name: Ferran Torres

Club: Valencia

Date of Birth: 29 February 2000

Position: Right-winger

FERRAN TORRES – HIS CAREER SO FAR

Without too much exaggeration, Valencia’s Ferran Torres is among the best and most exciting young prospects in La Liga. But the prolific 20-year-old right-winger may very well be in line for a big transfer to the Premier League soon. Still, throughout his career, he was only loyal to one club and that’s Valencia.

The local boy joined his team’s academy back in 2006 when he was only six years of age. And even though the world had to basically wait until 2016 to see him make his senior debut coming on as a substitute in a 0–2 Segunda Division B defeat against Mallorca B, everyone already knew he was quite special. After all, he had made his debut while still only being a junior.

Ahead of the following campaign, Torres was promoted to the B side, soon registering his first goal against Peralada-Girona B and then, in October 2017, he would renew his contract with Valencia, fending off the interest of La Liga giants like Barcelona and Real Madrid. In 2018, he finally made his first-team debut with the Bats, following only 12 registered games for the youth squads, scoring once and assisting further five in the process as well.

He made his bow with the first team on 30 November 2017 as he came on for Nacho Gil in the Copa del Rey clash against Real Zaragoza. The league debut also wasn’t far behind that, coming on 16 December that same year against Eibar as he became the first player born in the new millennium to play in La Liga.

Soon, more good things followed and Torres tallied appearances in Europe, eventually also becoming the youngest Valencia player to play 50 league games at the age of just 19 years and 324 days, breaking a 40-year old record set by Miguel Tendillo who was 19 years and 351 days old back in his time.

So far, Torres has played a total of 97 games for his club and scored nine goals while assisting 12 more on the side as well. It’s a pretty good return considering the hardship the club had to endure in recent times and the player’s youth as well. Even more impressively, two goals and two assists were recorded in the Champions League of all competitions, showing that he’s a man for big occasions.

Now, the footballing world is already aware of who he is and big things are once again on the horizon.

TRANSFER LATEST

The latest transfer rumours report Torres has already agreed personal terms with Manchester City and is really close to making a switch to the Premier League. There, as the transfer news state, he is looking forward to learning under the watchful eye of Pep Guardiola who has seemingly secured his replacement for Leroy Sane.

In some other Valencia transfer news, Los Che initially wanted to get much more money for their brilliant youngster but seeing how he has refused to extend his contract, and there is just a year left on the current deal, they are not exactly in a position to negotiate.

For that reason, it very much feels like this is a done deal and soon, Torres will be a new Man City player.

PLAYER PROFILE

Torres is a prolific right-winger through and through. Some of his best traits include an incredible dribbling ability and pace with which to surge down the flanks and destabilise the opposition’s defensive blocks. He is highly unpredictable and can even play through the middle if required to do so. Technically, he is also great and his passing skills, albeit not on the highest level just yet, are commendable and always improving.

The 20-year-old can bring a lot of creativity into any side and is versatile enough to adapt to different styles, formations and the coach’s ideas, which Guardiola is sure to have in abundance. Under the Catalan’s tutelage, Torres is bound to break through the glass ceiling and become a world-class player he was always destined to be.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Viktor Gyokeres admits uncertainty over his Seagulls future

Brighton forward Viktor Gyokeres has admitted that he doesn’t know whether or not he has a future at the club.

The 22-year-old has just returned to the Amex Stadium following a loan spell at German second tier outfit St. Pauli and, while he has hinted that he would like to remain a Seagulls player, he confessed that his career is currently in some limbo.

He told Swedish media outlet Fotbollskanalen [via Sussex Live]: “It’s a good club playing in the Premier League, so it’s clear you’re aiming for it, but we’ll see what happens. Otherwise, you can take it from there. Right now, I don’t know what will happen next season.

“But you can see what alternatives there are if I’m not in Brighton. I hope to be there. I’m not thinking about it right now or talking to my agent. Right now, I have a little vacation from everything and then I’ll be ready for next season. I don’t really know what they are thinking. It’s hard for me to say.”

Gyokeres hit seven goals and provided four assists in 26 league appearances at St. Pauli this season, a contribution which proved crucial as the Hamburg-based club narrowly avoided relegation to the third tier.

The Swedish attacker had an impressive match average of 1.9 shots in 2. Bundesliga, while a return of 1.8 successful dribbles per game shows that he is adept at taking on opposition defences (as per WhoScored).

He has struggled for recognition at Brighton, though, making just five senior appearances for the Seagulls. Those all came in domestic cup competitions in the 2018/19 campaign, with three games as an unused substitute the closest he has come to getting a run in the Premier League. [via TransferMarkt]

The 22-year-old boasts the versatility of being able to play as a centre-forward or left-sided winger, with the occasional appearance on the right flank also highlighting his ability to feature anywhere across the front line (as per TransferMarkt).

Gyokeres has put his best foot forward for recognition by Graham Potter with his form for St. Pauli during his loan spell, although the Brighton manager already has an abundance of attacking options at his disposal such as Neal Maupay, Aaron Connolly, Leandro Trossard and Glenn Murray.

Indeed, such is the competition for places in the Seagulls’ attack that Alireza Jahanbakhsh hasn’t even been able to make it into recent 20-man matchday squads and has been linked with Ajax (De Telegraaf) and PSV Eindhoven (Voetbal International).

Right now, it appears that the Swedish forward has an uphill task on his hands to forge his way into Potter’s plans for next season.

Brighton fans, do you think Gyokeres deserves a chance to prove his worth for the Seagulls? Comment below with your views!

Newcastle ace DeAndre Yedlin was embarrassing against Man City

In a disappointing 5-0 thrashing to Manchester City on Wednesday night, Steve Bruce’s Newcastle struggled to cause the home side any problems over the course of the 90 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, the Magpies hardly saw any of the ball, registering just 27% possession, and could only manage a measly one shot on target.

Having made some changes to his starting line-up for the clash at the Etihad, Bruce gave some fringe players the opportunity to impress, and none more so than USA international DeAndre Yedlin.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The right-back has struggled with injury problems this season, making only 19 appearances across all competitions – in fact, since the restart of the Premier League, he had only managed to play 18 minutes of top-flight football before the clash against City.

And on Wednesday night, he failed his huge audition.

As per Sofascore, his overall match rating of 5.7 was the lowest of any player on the pitch, and when you look at the underlying numbers behind his performance, it is clear to see why.

Despite playing the full 90 minutes, Yedlin only attempted 11 total passes, of which only five of them were successful – truly shocking numbers for a Premier League player, even despite the kind of attacking onslaught City put on.

But whilst he was wasteful in possession, and couldn’t offer a threat going forward (he attempted no dribbles or crosses whatsoever), his defensive stats were equally weak.

He contested just three total duels, winning only one of them, whilst he only made one tackle and one interception apiece.

With Bruce having the likes of Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth and even Valentino Lazaro who can play in that right-back or right wing-back slot, Yedlin needed to have a decent game against City to prove his worth.

Instead, he fluffed his big chance in front of his manager.

Man Utd fans react to latest Odion Ighalo news

Manchester United fans have been left divided this week after fresh claims about Odion Ighalo emerged.

According to Foot Mercato, the 30-year-old is close to signing an extension at the club with the player’s agent saying: “[Ighalo] feels very good in Manchester with which it is very close to a salary agreement. Negotiations with the Chinese are ongoing and are going well.”

However, it appears as if some are a little disappointed that the Nigerian forward is set to hang around for at least the remainder of the current season.

Ighalo originally joined the Red Devils on loan on deadline day of the January transfer window and his spell was set to end this week.

The Premier League season was halted back in March due to the ongoing pandemic and could be set to return in mid-June with players now confirmed to be back in full-time training.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Per Transfermarkt, Ighalo has provided four goals and one assist in all competitions whilst at Old Trafford. It means he is averaging a goal every 80 minutes for the club.

Which is why others seem to be absolutely thrilled by this latest claim…

Whilst some even wanted to talk up the involvement of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, claiming it is probably down to his influence that Ighalo wants to stay with one fan lauding his smart decisions in the transfer market.

It remains to be seen whether United can – or even want to – sign the veteran forward on a permanent basis, but that will probably be something for the summer rather than now as the PL season appears to be on the horizon.
