Celtic eyeing Davies loan

An update has emerged on Liverpool defender Ben Davies, regarding Celtic’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are chasing a deal to sign Liverpool central defender Ben Davies on a season-long loan. The report claims Celtic and Bournemouth are both interested in landing the centre-back this summer as Ange Postecoglou is eager to strengthen his defensive options ahead of next season.

Former Hoops boss Neil Lennon attempted to sign Davies from English Championship side Preston in the January transfer window, only for Liverpool to usurp them and snap him up for £2m.

Bye-bye Ajer

It could be time to say bye-bye to Kristoffer Ajer and hello to Davies this summer as Postecoglou restructures his defensive unit. The Athletic reported last month that Ajer is disappointed by the club’s attempts to keep him after they rejected £10m bids from Norwich and Bayer Leverkusen.

The Norweigan has 12 months left on his contract and has an informal agreement with the club that he will be allowed to leave should a respectable offer come in.

Therefore, the 23-year-old could be parting ways with the Scottish giants before the end of the transfer window and that could leave a gigantic hole to fill in the centre-back position, one which Davies could fill.

Prior to his switch to Anfield, the 25-year-old averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.82 in the Championship for Preston and previously managed an excellent score of 7.01 in a second-tier campaign for the Lancashire-based side.

This shows that he has the defensive quality to potentially be a great addition to Postecoglou’s side, which is why the Hoops must work hard to seal a deal for Lennon’s former target. His ability on the ball is another reason why he should be brought in. Calvin Andrew, a former teammate of Davies’, heaped praise on the defender and highlighted his quality to play out from the back with the ball whilst also being a strong defender.

He told The Athletic: “He’s robust. He can play. He’s naturally a left-back, I would say. He has that ability on the ball, he can play and see passes. But he’s not afraid of the dirty part of the game and puts his head where it hurts; a really brave and talented young man.”

The £60k-per-week beast, therefore, could be a terrific signing for the Hoops as he merges defensive stability with ball-playing qualities. This means that he could be perfect for a Celtic side likely to dominate possession in the Scottish Premiership, with his passing from the back able to help unlock defences and push Postecoglou’s side up in the pitch in transition as effectively as possible.

Newcastle set to be offered Andrea Belotti

It’s ‘likely’ that Newcastle United will be offered the chance to sign long-term transfer target Andrea Belotti on a cut-price deal, according to Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder.

The lowdown

The 27-year-old has been a prolific striker for Serie A club Torino, scoring 105 goals in 228 appearances and finishing third in the race for the league’s Golden Boot in 2016/17. He’s currently on Euro 2020 duty with semi-finalists Italy as a back-up to favoured centre-forward Ciro Immobile.

Belotti has now entered the final year of his contract at Torino, who will be wary of the risk that he leaves on a free transfer next summer.

Former Torino boss Davide Nicola has labelled him a ‘unique’ forward and a ‘great finisher’.

The latest

Ryder says that Newcastle have long ‘kept tabs’ on Belotti, who was ‘scouted before [the] pandemic’.

The 27-year-old’s contract contains an £85m release clause, but Torino are now thought to have slashed their demands to £29m with less than 12 months left on the deal, a 66% reduction in his asking price. [Chronicle Live]

However, Ryder expresses doubt as to whether Newcastle will take up the opportunity to bring him in. With transfer funds in ‘short supply’ and the club shrouded in a ‘veil of uncertainty’, it may not be realistic. [Chronicle Live]

The verdict

Belotti will surely have no shortage of suitors at that price tag, and a move to a Premier League club could leave Newcastle pondering what might have been.

If this deal had been available 12 months ago, you’d have been urging the club to pounce. However, the £20m addition of the prolific Callum Wilson means that the centre-forward position is no longer a transfer priority, and even if Bruce wanted to play two up top, it would be sensible to use an in-house option for the moment and invest in improving the squad elsewhere.

Journalist thinks West Brom board will back Valerien Ismael

West Brom’s board will try and back new manager Valerien Ismael this transfer window, journalist Luke Hatfield has told The Transfer Tavern.

Ismael was appointed as West Brom boss at the end of last month and has already got to work in the market, with Alex Mowatt, who he managed at Barnsley, set to be playing his football at The Hawthorns this upcoming season.

On a free transfer, Mowatt looks like he could be a very good signing after scoring eight goals and providing seven assists from midfield in the last Championship campaign.

Ismael’s work is unlikely to be done there, though, with the 45-year-old set to be fully backed, according to Hatfield.

“The Albion board will try and back him with what they can in terms of funds,” the Express & Star journalist said.

“How much money he’s going to have in his budget is another question, but I think they’re excited by what they saw from Ismael at Barnsley.”

Indeed, even if he was not their first choice, it is easy to see why owner Guochuan Lai and the rest of the West Brom board have a lot of belief in Ismael. On a very low budget, the Frenchman was able to guide Barnsley to the play-offs last season.

United dealt blow in Ryan Gauld pursuit

Sheffield United have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to bring Ryan Gauld to Bramall Lane this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Scottish Sun, who claim that, despite the general belief that the 25-year-old attacking midfielder will become a free agent upon the expiry of his SC Farense contract at the end of the month, the Portuguese side’s president Joao Rodrigues believes Gauld is actually contracted for a further year.

The report goes on to state that the £4.5m-rated man’s representatives are confident the midfielder will be leaving Farense in the coming days, as they claim Gauld has not signed a contract extension with the club, however, if the recently relegated Liga NOS side can prove the Scot is still under contract next season, they will demand a significant transfer fee for his services this summer.

Jokanovic will be livid

With Sheffield United being one of a host of clubs reported to be interested in a move for Gauld in the summer transfer window, should it turn out that a fee would be required to land the midfielder, Slavisa Jokanovic will undoubtedly be livid.

Indeed, the 25-year-old’s form in the top flight of Portuguese football would very much appear to indicate that he would be a fantastic signing for the Blades, with Gauld scoring nine goals, providing seven assists and creating a whopping 13 big chances for his teammates over his 33 Liga NOS appearances last season.

These returns saw the player whom Willie Miller dubbed “unstoppable” earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.36, ranking him as Farense’s best performer in the Primeira Liga last term.

As such, with Jokanvoic looking to build a side in the summer transfer window that is capable of going on to secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season, the attacking threat and creativity the signing of Gauld would have brought to the club would have undoubtedly provided the Blades with a huge boost to their chances of going on to achieve this feat.

However, if Farense are indeed entitled to a transfer fee for the midfielder this summer, it could well rule United out of a move for the Scot, something that would be an incredibly frustrating outcome for all involved with the club.

Leicester interested in Kabak

Leicester City are interested in signing Schalke defender Ozan Kabak after Liverpool decided not to activate his release clause.

What’s the story?

The 21-year-old joined the Reds on a short-term loan deal in January as Jurgen Klopp desperately tried to solve his side’s injury crisis at centre-back, but the enigmatic manager has decided not to make the youngster’s stay permanent.

Liverpool had the option to sign Kabak for £18m this summer, however, according to the chief reporter for German media outlet SPORT1 Paricker Berger, the Schalke man is now a target for Leicester and RB Leipzig after the Reds decided to pursue other targets.

Rodgers needs him

The Foxes finished a fantastic 2020/21 in fifth position, narrowly missing out on a Champions League qualification spot after losing in their final fixture for the second consecutive year.

Unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers, his side suffered multiple injuries to key players throughout the campaign and Leicester’s lack of strength in depth eventually caught up with them.

The former Celtic boss has shown himself to be an incredibly astute and flexible tactician during his time at the King Power Stadium, and the Midlands outfit deployed a variety of different formations throughout the recently concluded campaign.

Leicester often switched between a back four and a back five depending on their opponents but significant injuries to star centre-backs Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana and Caglar Soyuncu often left Rodgers fielding square pegs in round holes.

Full-backs Timothy Castagne and Christian Fuchs did a job in the heart of defence when Rodgers wanted added protection, although the departure of Fuchs and Wes Morgan is set to leave the 2016 Premier League champions stretched incredibly thin if reinforcements don’t arrive over the coming months.

The Northern Irish manager, therefore, needs a player like the £22.5m-rated (as per Transfermarkt) Kabak this summer as he aims to mount another assault on the top four.

After a nervy opening game for Liverpool, the Turkey international quickly settled into life at Anfield, making 13 appearances for the Merseyside outfit and earning praise from Klopp for his assured performances.

“Ozan came in at 20 from Germany, was a big prospect but wasn’t lucky with the last two teams he played for; one went down (Stuttgart), and the other will probably go down (Schalke). But nobody really doubted his quality,” said Klopp earlier in the campaign.

It’s not often a young defender with bags of potential and some Premier League experience comes on the market at around the £20m mark, and Leicester can’t afford to let this opportunity to snap Kabak up on a clever cut-price deal pass them by.

Hasenhuttl heading for huge Minamino error

Ralph Hasenhuttl hinted recently that Southampton could look to sign Takumi Minamino from Liverpool again next season, which would be a huge error by the Austrian manager.

The Japan international joined Southampton on loan on transfer deadline day and went to make 10 appearances for the Saints.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Southampton’s final game of the season against West Ham, which they would lose 3-0 with Minamino missing a great early chance to give the Saints the lead, the former RB Leipzig boss said: “I must say. He was a very lively factor in our game, in the games he played.

“He not only scored fantastic goals but his mentality and his character really fit into our team. You can see why a club like Liverpool wanted to sign him.

“He did a good job here. We gave him a chance to show up. We will have a look what happens in the summer, we will see what Liverpool want to do.

“There are discussions going on but we will have a look in the summer.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

There would be plenty of Southampton fans who might disagree with Hasenhuttl’s praise for Minamino as, whilst he had a bright start with a goal on his debut against Newcastle United, he managed just one more goal and no assists in his next nine appearances.

His average rating of 6.42 from WhoScored ranks him as the 15th-best performer for Southampton across the Premier League season, which doesn’t exactly justify bringing him back from Liverpool again next term.

Whilst Hasenhuttl doesn’t make it clear whether it would be a loan deal or a permanent one, either option would arguably be a letdown for Southampton fans.

A loan deal would almost guarantee the 26-year-old game-time, which could stunt the development of fellow left-sided players such as Nathan Tella and Will Ferry. A permanent deal would take away funds from other potential transfer targets, and Southampton should definitely be looking to improve their defence before looking at attacking players – only relegated West Brom conceded more Premier League goals than the Saints in 2020/21.

The £10.8m-rated “machine” has done very little to win over Southampton fans during his spell at the club, so it would be a huge mistake by Hasenhuttl to bring him back again next season, and he should be looking to strengthen the squad elsewhere.
