Cowan scores second ton of match

Ed Cowan scored his second century of the match and fourth for the Sheffield Shield season as Tasmania built a strong lead over South Australia on the third day in Hobart

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2014
ScorecardEd Cowan scored his second century of the match and fourth for the Sheffield Shield season as Tasmania built a strong lead over South Australia on the third day in Hobart. At stumps, Tasmania were 4 for 176 in their second innings and their advantage had grown to 236 runs, with Cowan unbeaten on 111 and James Faulkner on 5.It continued an excellent start to the Shield campaign for Cowan, who began with 100 in Tasmania’s first match against Western Australia in Perth and followed with 105 at home against Victoria. The last time a player scored four hundreds in a Shield summer was in 2009-10 when Steven Smith achieved the feat; Cowan has now done so by the halfway point of the season. His 21st first-class century prevented South Australia fighting back into the match after they fell 60 short of Tasmania’s first-innings total. The Redbacks started the third day at 3 for 114 and contributions from Mark Cosgrove (79), Travis Head (64) and Johan Botha (70) got them over the 300-mark, but only just, as they were dismissed for 302.Andrew Fekete and Ben Hilfenhaus claimed three wickets each for Tasmania before the Tigers batted a second time and lost opener Jordan Silk for 13. Alex Doolan made 19 and George Bailey scored 22, but Cowan was the only Tasmania batsman who went on with his start.

Rossington, Willey shake Nottinghamshire

ScorecardAdam Rossington made a maiden Championship century for Northants (file picture)•Getty ImagesAdam Rossington and David Willey helped Northamptonshire celebrate one of their better days of a troubled Division One season as they seized the initiative against title-chasing Nottinghamshire.Rossington scored 103, his maiden championship hundred, as his side posted 260 all out before Willey picked up three crucial top-order wickets to leave Nottinghamshire’s reply in disarray on 38 for 4 at Wantage Road.Rossington, 21, on loan from Middlesex, scored his runs from 124 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and two sixes, enabling his new county to recover from a position of 108 for 6 during the early part of the afternoon session.Rossington was eventually bowled by Ajmal Shahzad, two deliveries after launching the same bowler high over deep square-leg to move to the second first-class century of his career. With 18 overs to face at the end of the day Nottinghamshire’s innings got off to a dreadful start as Willey bowled Alex Hales and then had Steven Mullaney caught behind in his first over.Worse was to follow as the visitors were reduced to 25 for 4 as a misjudgement from James Taylor resulted in him being given out lbw to Mohammad Azharullah before Samit Patel nudged Willey to second slip. With both sides having been in floodlit one-day action the previous evening, the start time had been put back until midday and Chris Read wasted little time in inserting the home county once he had won the toss.James Kettleborough had provided Notts with the initial breakthrough, flicking back onto his own stumps as he tried to leave alone a ball from Harry Gurney.James Middlebrook and Kyle Coetzer then combined in a second wicket stand of 50 as Northants reached 88 for 2 at lunch but the wheels came off spectacularly after the interval as the home county lost four wickets in quick succession, three of them to Andre Adams, who ended with figures of 3 for 60 from his 20 overs.Matt Spriegel and Willey both scored 19 and offered good support for Rossington, who then began to farm the strike and monopolise the scoring in stands of 26 with Neil Wagner and 33 with Azharullah. Gurney, who took 3 for 68, removed New Zealand internationalWagner, who failed to score on his debut.Without a championship win so far this season Northants were pressing for further wickets towards the end of the day but were held at bay by Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels before bad light came to Nottinghamshire’s rescue 3.2 overs early.

Never mind the lack of hype

India v Pakistan match has lacked anticipation this time but it will be all right by the time MS Dhoni and Mohammad Hafeez walk out for the toss at 7pm on Friday

Cullinan: Pakistan’s spinners key

Match factsMarch 21, 2014
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)Big pictureThere was a time when India-Pakistan matches, no matter where they were being played, no matter what tournament they were part of, brought two entire countries to a halt for days. All the people could talk of days, weeks, months in advance was “the match”. Sachin Tendulkar didn’t sleep properly for 12 nights leading into India’s World Cup match against Pakistan in 2003. He said he was made to live that match a year in advance. Pakistan players were believed to find extra powers when they played India. All sorts of myth surrounded the match. That India couldn’t beat Pakistan on a Friday was a fact nobody contested. This match hasn’t that kind of anticipation. And it’s not as if there has been a glut of India-Pakistan matches to make this less significant. It is just that times are changing. Even warm-up matches are live on television. It all means less time for the mind to build up to the big one. It doesn’t help that for the first time in the history of tournaments of five or more teams that India and Pakistan are playing the first match of the main draw. It is like asking Bruce Springsteen to be the opening act on a rock concert. A bit like shahi paneer or butter chicken at the start of the buffet. It can’t be such a bad thing, though, that there isn’t much hype attached to this match. As it is there will be nerves and edginess at the start of a big tournament; it can do without unwanted, at times uncricketing pressures. And if the match is good enough – like another supposed-to-be-nondescript one 19 days ago was – it will capture the people’s imagination. The modern, almost classical by now, differences between India and Pakistan will be on show. India stable, at times to the point of stubbornness but still stable. Pakistan happy to chop and change, their captain’s neck always under the block. India with their batsmen. Pakistan with their bowlers. India with their love of the chase. Pakistan defence. With a warm feeling, nonetheless, of two of their best chases of recent times – the Test against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, the Asia Cup ODI against India in Dhaka – and the dew almost certain to play a role in this evening game. Don’t worry about the absence of hype; this match will be all right by the time MS Dhoni and Mohammad Hafeez walk out for the toss at 7pm on Friday. And, by the way, many of the players on these teams are young enough to not even know of the Ghost Of The Friday.Form guide (most recent first)India WWLLW
Pakistan LWWWLWatch out forR Ashwin v Saeed Ajmal. On slow and low pitches much like both spinners’ home conditions, these offspinners with deliveries that go away in their repertoire will be a contest to savour. Ajmal, in particular, has given India much grief. Even Tendulkar couldn’t pick his doosra. The Indians now are facing unorthodox net bowlers to simulate Ajmal. In two Twenty20 matches against Pakistan, Ashwin has conceded only 44 runs for three wickets. So there is evidence to suggest both raise their game against each other, a traditional barometer of the quality of a cricketer from India or Pakistan.Who doesn’t like some last-over six hitting?•AFPMS Dhoni v Shahid Afridi. India-Pakistan matches sometimes come down to which of the leaders led a calmer team; others to which leader roused more emotion. It is just the timing and the feel. Pakistan have traditionally enjoyed the emotion in order to bring the best out of them, India have tried to play it down because they believe it allows them to handle games better. India prefer the Dhoni-like match-winning six in the last over, Pakistan the Afridi version.Team newsIndia haven’t given any indication that they will use Ajinkya Rahane, who opens in the IPL, at the top of the innings. In the warm-ups, Rohit Sharma, who bats in the middle order in the IPL, and Shikhar Dhawan have opened. India haven’t actually ruled out Rahane as an opener, but India are not known to be flexible with their plans. If Rahane doesn’t open, his participation in the match depends on how many bowlers India play. If they can rely on Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma to be the fifth bowler, there could be space for Rahane. Or even Stuart Binny if India want a better batsman than a specialist bowler and still some extra assurance with the ball. Given the dew, a third spinner might be ruled out.India (possible): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ajinkya Rahane/Stuart Binny/Amit Mishra/Varun Aaron/Mohit Sharma, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohammed Shami.Kamran Akmal has made a strong case for himself as opener with a fifty against New Zealand in the warm-up game. If he does come in, he replaces Ahmed Shehzad and relieves brother Umar of wicketkeeping duties. Shoaib Malik is a good chance, too, for his India-slaying capabilities if nothing else.Pakistan (possible): 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Sharjeel Khan, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt.), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sohaib Maqsood, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Bilawal Bhatti, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal.Pitch and conditions Dew remains a big concern, but this being a Twenty20 starting at 7.30pm the side batting first will be disadvantaged a little less than otherwise. Expect turn too.Stats and trivia Pakistan have never beaten India in a World Cup match MS Dhoni has never scored an international Twenty20 fiftyQuotes “I feel it has mellowed down to some extent, whatever the reason maybe, you do not see many altercations on the field. But still you see very competitive cricket, which I feel is very important.”
“History does not really bother us. Irrespective of whether it is good or bad, it is history. All days are not great days. You should be ready for the next day.”

Canada take honours in Auty Cup double-header

In the Sunday double-header, Canada prevailed on both occasions, with a disciplined bowling effort from Canada‘s bowlers helping them to a five-wicket win over United States of America in the first T20 match in King City. USA chose to bat, but lost regular wickets through the course of their innings. Only four batsmen were able to get into double digits as all of Canada’s bowlers struck at least once. Henry Osinde picked up figures of 2 for 23, as USA reached 106 for 9 in their 20 overs.Canada’s innings started in a similar fashion, with Rizwan Cheema out for 9 with the score on 18. However, Ruvindu Gunasekera and Usman Limbada put together a 41-run partnership to steady the innings. Gunasekera, who has been in prolific form, top-scored for Canada once again with 58 off 50 balls, as Canada reached their target inside of 17 overs. In their second match, Canada once again had the better of USA with a 78-run victory. Canada batted first, with openers Gunasekera and Cheema putting on 63 in just over five overs. Once Cheema fell, Nitish Kumar and Gunasekera put on a further 56 runs to put Canada in the ascendancy. Each of Canada’s batsmen got into double digits as they posted 189 for 5. Timil Patel had best figures of 3 for 40.Facing a steep target, USA’s chase came undone in the first couple of overs itself as they struggled to maintain the required rate while safeguarding their wickets. Only wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson played an innings of note, with his 44 off 36 balls. Salman Nazar’s 3 for 27, Harvir Baidwan’s 2 for 25 and Junaid Siddiqui’s 2 for 32 ensured USA were unable to make a decent fist of the chase.

Flying Foxes end Lord's drought to extend lead at the top

Middlesex stumble to 143 in second innings before Handscomb seals chase against old side

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay18-May-2025Three wickets apiece for seamers Logan van Beek and Ben Green set up Leicestershire’s first red-ball victory at Lord’s in 45 years, flattening Middlesex to strengthen their position as Rothesay County Championship Division Two front-runners.Van Beek took 3 for 28 – including two wickets in as many balls – while Green’s 3 for 32 also played a pivotal role in ensuring the home side were dismissed for 143 in their second innings.Middlesex collapsed after Sam Robson and Max Holden’s opening stand of 51, losing six wickets for 34 despite Luke Hollman’s defiant knock of 42. That left the Foxes hunting a modest victory target of 102 and they got there with three wickets down, skipper Peter Handscomb hitting the winning runs off Hollman to secure his side’s fourth win in six games.Van Beek’s initial spell in the morning was on the costly side, with Robson picking him off three times to the short leg-side fence as he and Holden wiped out their 32-run overnight deficit without loss. But changes of bowling at both ends brought Leicestershire success, with Robson pinned in front by a Green delivery that seamed back at him, although Tom Scriven’s successful lbw shout against Holden might have been missing leg stump.Hollman began his innings brightly, crunching Green through the covers for four, but Middlesex soon became bogged down and their lack of runs eventually gave way to a clatter of wickets.Despite avoiding a pair, Leus du Plooy never looked entirely comfortable and was trapped leg before as van Beek got one to straighten before Ryan Higgins flashed hard at the next and Handscomb clung on at second slip.Middlesex struggled through to lunch at 79 for 4, but their prospects continued to deteriorate after the interval as Ian Holland drew Ben Geddes into an edge to slip and van Beek bamboozled Jack Davies with a ball that took out his off stump.Hollman’s boundary off van Beek was the first in well over an hour of play, but Zafar Gohar quickly added another, thumping Josh Hull to the rope beyond mid-off to lift his side’s total into three figures. The seventh-wicket pair ground out a dogged partnership of 40 before Green returned to dismiss both Gohar and then Hollman in identical fashion, jagging the ball back to hit the top of middle and off. A brisk undefeated 16 from Toby Roland-Jones hauled Middlesex’s slender lead just above 100 before legspinner Rehan Ahmed mopped up the tail with two wickets from successive deliveries.Sol Budinger launched Leicestershire’s pursuit with gusto, clubbing Dane Paterson for two boundaries in a quickfire 25 before dragging onto his leg stump, while Holden’s well-judged catch over his shoulder as he ran back from cover accounted for Rishi Patel.Rehan also departed, caught behind off Middlesex’s teenage debutant Naavya Sharma, but it was not enough to derail the Foxes as Handscomb and Lewis Hill steered them across the line.

Stirling fifty sets up Sylhet win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsPaul Stirling’s rapid fifty gave Sylhet Royals the start they needed•BCB

Paul Stirling and Mominul Haque helped Sylhet Royals to a competitive score of 175 for 7 before their bowlers put in a spirited effort to secure a 33-run win against Barisal Burners in their first game. It was an impressive start for the franchise that won just two games in the first edition of BPL.Put in to bat first, Sylhet began at a good pace but lost Hamilton Masakadza in the fourth over when left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam had him trapped lbw for 19. Thereafter, Stirling and Mominul added 51 quickly, using the pace of the ball on most occasions to find boundaries. Stirling cracked eight fours and a six in his 29-ball half-century, backing away whenever he sought a boundary, while Mominul showcased strength in hitting three fours and a six and supported the big-hitters at the other end well. But after the team had reached the hundred-run mark in the tenth over, the Sylhet batsmen lost their way. Kabir Ali and Alok Kapali took two wickets each, as Barisal restricted them to 175 but that total was still going to be a challenge for a team that has lost players like Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul in the mass Pakistani pull-out.Mohammad Nabi, the Afghanistan allrounder who was acquired by Sylhet after they lost two West Indies players (Andre Russell and Tino Best), took two early wickets with his flighty offspin before the rest of the slow bowlers took over. Sohag Gazi didn’t pick up a wicket but created enough pressure for the likes of Elton Chigumbura, Suhrawadi Shuvo and Bishawnath Halder to pick up cheap wickets. Ali was the only man to make some runs, hammering 50 off 21 balls with four huge sixes, before being stumped the off Shuvo. None of the other Barisal batsmen stayed at the crease long enough to have a serious go at the target.
