Flying Foxes end Lord's drought to extend lead at the top

Middlesex stumble to 143 in second innings before Handscomb seals chase against old side

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay18-May-2025Three wickets apiece for seamers Logan van Beek and Ben Green set up Leicestershire’s first red-ball victory at Lord’s in 45 years, flattening Middlesex to strengthen their position as Rothesay County Championship Division Two front-runners.Van Beek took 3 for 28 – including two wickets in as many balls – while Green’s 3 for 32 also played a pivotal role in ensuring the home side were dismissed for 143 in their second innings.Middlesex collapsed after Sam Robson and Max Holden’s opening stand of 51, losing six wickets for 34 despite Luke Hollman’s defiant knock of 42. That left the Foxes hunting a modest victory target of 102 and they got there with three wickets down, skipper Peter Handscomb hitting the winning runs off Hollman to secure his side’s fourth win in six games.Van Beek’s initial spell in the morning was on the costly side, with Robson picking him off three times to the short leg-side fence as he and Holden wiped out their 32-run overnight deficit without loss. But changes of bowling at both ends brought Leicestershire success, with Robson pinned in front by a Green delivery that seamed back at him, although Tom Scriven’s successful lbw shout against Holden might have been missing leg stump.Hollman began his innings brightly, crunching Green through the covers for four, but Middlesex soon became bogged down and their lack of runs eventually gave way to a clatter of wickets.Despite avoiding a pair, Leus du Plooy never looked entirely comfortable and was trapped leg before as van Beek got one to straighten before Ryan Higgins flashed hard at the next and Handscomb clung on at second slip.Middlesex struggled through to lunch at 79 for 4, but their prospects continued to deteriorate after the interval as Ian Holland drew Ben Geddes into an edge to slip and van Beek bamboozled Jack Davies with a ball that took out his off stump.Hollman’s boundary off van Beek was the first in well over an hour of play, but Zafar Gohar quickly added another, thumping Josh Hull to the rope beyond mid-off to lift his side’s total into three figures. The seventh-wicket pair ground out a dogged partnership of 40 before Green returned to dismiss both Gohar and then Hollman in identical fashion, jagging the ball back to hit the top of middle and off. A brisk undefeated 16 from Toby Roland-Jones hauled Middlesex’s slender lead just above 100 before legspinner Rehan Ahmed mopped up the tail with two wickets from successive deliveries.Sol Budinger launched Leicestershire’s pursuit with gusto, clubbing Dane Paterson for two boundaries in a quickfire 25 before dragging onto his leg stump, while Holden’s well-judged catch over his shoulder as he ran back from cover accounted for Rishi Patel.Rehan also departed, caught behind off Middlesex’s teenage debutant Naavya Sharma, but it was not enough to derail the Foxes as Handscomb and Lewis Hill steered them across the line.

Stirling fifty sets up Sylhet win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsPaul Stirling’s rapid fifty gave Sylhet Royals the start they needed•BCB

Paul Stirling and Mominul Haque helped Sylhet Royals to a competitive score of 175 for 7 before their bowlers put in a spirited effort to secure a 33-run win against Barisal Burners in their first game. It was an impressive start for the franchise that won just two games in the first edition of BPL.Put in to bat first, Sylhet began at a good pace but lost Hamilton Masakadza in the fourth over when left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam had him trapped lbw for 19. Thereafter, Stirling and Mominul added 51 quickly, using the pace of the ball on most occasions to find boundaries. Stirling cracked eight fours and a six in his 29-ball half-century, backing away whenever he sought a boundary, while Mominul showcased strength in hitting three fours and a six and supported the big-hitters at the other end well. But after the team had reached the hundred-run mark in the tenth over, the Sylhet batsmen lost their way. Kabir Ali and Alok Kapali took two wickets each, as Barisal restricted them to 175 but that total was still going to be a challenge for a team that has lost players like Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul in the mass Pakistani pull-out.Mohammad Nabi, the Afghanistan allrounder who was acquired by Sylhet after they lost two West Indies players (Andre Russell and Tino Best), took two early wickets with his flighty offspin before the rest of the slow bowlers took over. Sohag Gazi didn’t pick up a wicket but created enough pressure for the likes of Elton Chigumbura, Suhrawadi Shuvo and Bishawnath Halder to pick up cheap wickets. Ali was the only man to make some runs, hammering 50 off 21 balls with four huge sixes, before being stumped the off Shuvo. None of the other Barisal batsmen stayed at the crease long enough to have a serious go at the target.

Trego helps keep Somerset alive

ScorecardPeter Trego got Somerset off to a flying start•Getty Images

Peter Trego lit up Somerset’s 50-run win over Hampshire with a big-hitting innings of 61 and then took two top-order wickets when the home side responded.Trego’s flamboyant battering of the Hampshire attack, which included nine fours and three sixes, overshadowed a valiant attempt by Hampshire opener James Vince to reverse the outcome.Vince was last out after making 95 in an increasingly hopeless cause as Somerset coasted to their fifth Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B victory to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the later stages of the competition.Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams chose to field first and must have wondered if he had made the right decision as Trego took apart the bowling in a whirlwind of boundaries.Marcus Trescothick lost his wicket in the second over but then Trego was joined by Chris Jones in a partnership of 73 for the second wicket in only seven overs. Trego’s assault lasted only 31 balls before he hoisted spinner Danny Briggs into the deep, where Chris Wood held the catch.Somerset’s run blast halted after Trego’s departure and the rest of the innings was sedate by comparison with Briggs taking two wickets for 39 runs and Sean Ervine applying the brakes with figures of 3 for 35.Ervine bowled James Hildreth and then removed the potentially dangerous Arul Suppiah and Abdur Rehman. But Somerset were revived by Jos Buttler, who made 51 off 59 balls, and Gemaal Hussain who hit two sixes in his brief innings of 18 not out. When Hampshire replied they again found Trego in inspired form, having Adams caught at slip by Trescothick in his second over and finding a gap in Neil McKenzie’s defences in his third. With Rehman having Simon Katich caught behind without scoring, Hampshire were 15 for three and then 49 for 4 when Ervine was bowled by Steve Kirby. Then Vince was joined by Liam Dawson in a stand of 73 for the fifth wicket in 12 overs to begin the process of a Hampshire recovery.Even after Dawson had gone at 122, Michael Bates helped Vince add another 40 for the sixth – but Hampshire were always struggling to match the required run rate. Kirby came back to bowl Bates and later did the same to Briggs, marooning Vince short of his century.Vince lifted Hussain for six and added two more runs to take his score to 95 but in the same over was leg before wicket from the last ball of the 36th to confirm Somerset’s superiority.

Shafayat and Adams lead Hampshire renaissance

Bilal Shafayat made 93 in his first appearance for Hampshire while Jimmy Adams’ century helped lead the hosts to 352 for 8

Some counties wait all season for a successful comeback but Hampshire had two in a day here, with Bilal Shafayat making 93 and Jimmy Adams pressing on to 122 after the hosts had been stuck in on what appeared, at first sight, to be a seamer’s dream of a pitch.Shafayat’s return to centre stage was especially remarkable, given that his Championship career looked as though it might have stalled, never to start again. Released by Notts at the end of the 2010 season, he played only second XI cricket last year and was signed up by Shropshire for their Minor Counties campaign this term. In some ways, though, Adams’ innings was even more pleasing for Hampshire. Their captain missed the last two Championship games for undisclosed “personal reasons” and, before that, four innings had brought the opener only 24 runs.Prospects did not look great for any batsman when, after two days of rain, the covers were removed this morning to reveal a green pitch. No wonder table-topping Derbyshire opted to bowl first – and no surprise, either, when Hampshire found themselves one down through Liam Dawson snicking a catch to second slip.In truth, though, the hosts were not required to play nearly enough against the new ball and when they did find themselves pressed into action, it came off the surface so slowly that adjustments could be made. But, that said, the stand of 164 between Adams and Shafayat was still special enough to have home supporters purring with pleasure.Shafayat looked to have the cricketing world ay his feet during the early stages of his career. He made a Championship debut for Notts in 2001, when still a week short of his 17th birthday, scoring an eye-catching 72. Soon enough, the youngster was not only playing for England Under-19s but also captaining them and huge things were expected. Somehow, though, Shafayat failed to kick on. A spell at Northamptonshire did not do the trick, nor did a return to Trent Bridge, and when Notts decided to let him go in 2010 he had averaged less than 12 across six Championship matches and his career figure was down to a distinctly modest 29.72.Since then, Shafayat’s only first-class cricket has been played in Pakistan but neither that nor a second XI double century for Hampshire last season had persuaded anyone over here to take a serious punt on him – until now. Hampshire decided to register the 27-year-old last Friday on a short-term basis and a combination of events this week (with Michael Carberry playing for England Lions and this game being reduced to a two-day affair, thereby encouraging the hosts to leave out a front-line bowler) brought about his selection. It will take more than this knock – lasting 93 balls and containing 17 fours, many of which were clipped, turned and forced through the leg side – to remove ‘riled Ricky Ponting’ from the top of Shafayat’s CV. But it’s a good start. “I don’t want that to be my only claim to fame,” he said with a smile when reminded of how he annoyed Australia’s captain while serving as England’s 12th man during the tense final stages of the drawn 2009 Ashes Test in Cardiff.Required, on two occasions, to take gloves and water to last pair Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar, Shafayat felt the rough edge of Ponting’s tongue for playing his part in what the boys in Baggy Green saw as a dastardly time-wasting plot. Here, Shafayat appeared all set to celebrate a century until chasing a wide one from seamer Jonathan Clare to edge a catch behind. He left to warm applause but looked particularly disappointed, and understandably so.As for Adams, he showed why his name was in the England frame not so long ago, producing a steady stream of straight and cover drives. His hundred was reached off 176 balls and the left-hander looked set for a big one until he was rightly sent back by Sean Ervine and run-out. Still, Hampshire’s stall had been well and truly set out and, although wickets fell regularly during the second half of the day, the home side were more than happy with their 352 for eight. And they may be happier still if they can persuade Derbyshire to set up a contest on Saturday through the forfeiture route.”I think they are keen but we’ll talk again in the morning,” Adams said. “We want to have an entertaining final day if we can and hopefully we’ll have a game for everyone tomorrow.”And as for the two major run-makers? “It was pretty obvious I’ve been short of runs so it’s nice for me to get back and make some,” said Adams. “But I thought Bilal played magnificently and it was a pleasure to bat with him. He has scored buckets of runs for our second team, it was a great effort from him today and it gives us a few good headaches and some tough decisions for next week.”

– Tenho 26 anos.

Onions to provide bowling cover

Graham Onions, the Durham pace bowler, will travel with the England squad to UAE next month to provide cover for the fast-bowling attack

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2011Graham Onions, the Durham pace bowler, will travel with the England squad to UAE next month to provide cover for the fast-bowling attack in the opening weeks of the trip.Onions won’t be an official member of the squad which was named on Friday but the selectors want to ensure there is adequate back-up available to Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss with three of the quick bowlers – Stuart Broad (shoulder), Chris Tremlett (back) and Tim Bresnan (elbow) – recovering from injuries.Tremlett hasn’t featured for England since the first Test against India, at Lord’s, and Broad hasn’t played since the fourth ODI against the same team at the same ground in September. Both are currently in South Africa, along with Onions and James Anderson, at a training camp with the performance programme players. Bresnan, meanwhile, recently underwent elbow surgery to remove a bone fragment. The England management are hopeful all three will be fit for selection ahead of the first Test against Pakistan, in Dubai, on January 17 and if Onions isn’t required he is likely to return home when that match begins.”We’ve obviously got some niggles from the seamer point of view, so Graham Onions will go out there in a cover capacity,” Geoff Miller, the national selector, said. “If he’s not required then he’ll probably come back after the first Test, or even during it.”Onions hasn’t played for England since the third Test against South Africa, at Newlands, in early 2010 after suffering a career-threatening back injury. However, he was back around the national set-up last season when he was called into the Test squad as cover for Anderson at The Oval. He then went to Ireland with the one-day squad and flew out to India for the ODI series in October after injury to Chris Woakes.Onions may yet find himself in a similar position to Ajmal Shahzad, the Yorkshire pace bowler, on last year’s Ashes tour when Shahzad started as an unofficial 17th member of the squad during the warm-up matches before the management decided to keep him on for the whole of the Test series.

Law hopes sun shines on Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s outgoing coach, Stuart Law, has backed his team to bounce back from their 110-run defeat in the opening ODI at The Oval, and expects them to compete strongly in the remaining four matches of the five-match series.Sri Lanka lost the series opener at The Oval on Tuesday in cold and clammy conditions that suited the England bowlers, in particular James Anderson. He claimed 4 for 18 including three wickets in his first three overs, as Sri Lanka stumbled to 15 for 4.”We haven’t lost that way in recent times. It’s not the end of the world,” said Law. “When you get walloped like that it gets a bit out of you. The boys had a chat about it and we are here to show tomorrow that we are not bad, and we deserve our ranking. We are the World Cup runners-up.”The conditions really suited the seam bowlers of England the other night,” he added. “We have got to combat that. Here, traditionally the wickets are seam-friendly and I think it looks pretty good to bat on [as well].”However, Law admitted he had been disappointed with the manner in which Sri Lanka collapsed at The Oval. “You have a mental block regarding losing wickets at the start and all of a sudden it can be contagious. To be 15 for 4 on a very good batting wicket was well below par.”The most disappointed that day was the dressing room. We are better than that and we are up for the challenge,” said Law. “Even at 22 degrees the boys are still freezing cold. If you had been to Colombo, you can appreciate where they come from.”It’s a bit different when the sun doesn’t come out a great deal. But when it comes, the change in the mood and the smile on the faces is good to see. If it’s a nice and sunny day, I am sure the boys will enjoy the cricket.”Following the retirement of Sanath Jayasuriya and with Upul Tharanga serving a three-month ban for using a banned substance, Sri Lanka will bank on the vast experience of Mahela Jayawardene to open the innings in the rest of the five-match one-day series, with skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan.”Mahela opened the innings in the Twenty20 game and he’s going to take over that role again, a role he has done before and successfully. He’s looking forward for it,” said Law.”At the moment we’ve got to win. You get judged on your performances. We would like to say that you have to get some youngsters in and groom them, but if you are not winning, [that can cause] problems.”We see that we have to win the next game and Mahela, every time he has opened, has got a hundred or gone pretty close to it. So it’s a straightforward choice,” he said.Jayasuriya’s exit after just one match gives Sri Lanka the opportunity to test young Dinesh Chandimal as a middle-order batsman. “Chandimal will play his first international game on tour. He has done well for us in the past. He’s got a hundred against India in Zimbabwe and he is an exciting young prospect. I am looking forward to watching him.”When questioned why he opted to move from Sri Lanka to Bangladesh, Law replied: “I am not allowed to answer those questions according to the team management. It’s all about cricket tomorrow, thanks. If you read the papers you can gauge what’s going on. If I could sit and talk, I will talk for hours and hours. But the management has instructed that we are only talking about the match tomorrow.”

Willoughby and Hussain spark Somerset revival

Charl Willoughby and Gemaal Hussain each took four wickets for Somerset as Hampshire surrendered a position of power

Charl Willoughby and Gemaal Hussain each took four wickets for Somerset as Hampshire surrendered a position of power on the first day of their County Championship Division One clash at the Rose Bowl.Liam Dawson made 91 and the consistent Jimmy Adams scored 74 as Hampshire reached an impressive 199 for 2 without major alarms. Then the ball started to swing and the home side lost their last eight wickets for the addition of just 86. Hampshire were eventually all out for 285 in the 85th over and struggling Somerset confirmed their re-emergence by reaching 40 without loss from nine overs at the close. All this was far removed from the first session which was dominated by Hampshire after their captain Dominic Cork had won the toss in bright sunshine. Adams and Dawson put on 136 for the first wicket before Adams was caught behind off Hussain, the first of five catches for Craig Kieswetter.Johann Myburgh was the wicketkeeper’s second victim, diving in front of first slip at 154 and the rest became a bit of a procession as batting suddenly became a difficult proposition in the breeze. The back of the Hampshire innings was broken by Willoughby who went through the middle order to produce an outstanding spell of four for three in only 18 balls.Willoughby’s left-arm pace accounted for James Vince, Neil McKenzie and then Nic Pothas to the first ball after lunch, with Sean Ervine following to a catch in the covers. Hampshire at that stage had lost four wickets for nine runs. All the while Dawson, in an emergency batting position as opener due to Hampshire’s injury problems, remained steadfast until at 231 he attempted to pull Steve Kirby and got a thin edge to Kieswetter. Dawson’s 91 came off 207 balls and included eight fours and in the context of the day’s play, it was an invaluable contribution.Friedel De Wet (8) went at 261, another victim for Kirby and only some late resistance from Cork made the Hampshire total respectable. Belligerent Cork (44) struck Hussain for five successive fours before the bowler had his revenge in his next over when the former England all-rounder lofted a catch to the cover boundary where Peter Trego held the catch. At the fall of the last wicket, Danny Briggs to Hussain, Hampshire’s slide was complete. Willoughby finished with figures of 4 for 40 and Hussain took 4 for 83.The Somerset openers soon improved on the work of the bowlers. Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah rattled up 40 with six boundaries between them as Somerset ended the first day 245 behind.
