Rampant Kings XI storm into semi-finals

Kings XI Punjab walloped Northern Knights by 120 runs to storm into the semi-finals of the CLT20 with three wins in three

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran26-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
In 11 innings for Kings XI Punjab this year, Manan Vohra has reached at least 25 on ten occasions•BCCI

If you wanted to see how diverse Twenty20 games get, you should have got yourself a ticket to the double-header in Mohali on Friday. First the Barbados Tridents and Cape Cobras played out a Super Over thriller, after which Kings XI Punjab walloped Northern Knights by 120 runs – the biggest win in six seasons of the CLT20 – to storm into the semi-finals.Kings XI lived up to their billing as a bunch of power-hitters as batsman after batsman clouted boundary after boundary to run up a total of 215. The openers Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag set the tone with a high-octane 102-run stand, with David Miller rounding off the innings with an 18-ball 40. Knights’ biggest strength was their new-ball opening pair, but Trent Boult and Tim Southee had combined figures of 8-0-93-0 on the day.In the face of a massive target, Knights’ batting rolled over for 95. Only someone desperate to “take the positive out of it” would point to it being a marginal improvement over the 92 Knights folded for in their previous game. Knights captain Daniel Flynn was more forthright, “We got found out today,” was his assessment. At no stage of the game were Kings XI second best. Vohra began with successive boundaries in the first over, showing the same irresistable form that has fetched him ten scores of 25 or more in the 11 innings since he got his chance midway through the IPL season. All through, he has shown that he isn’t fazed by the quality of the opposition bowlers, and today was no different as Boult and Southee couldn’t find a way past his made-for-Twenty20 batting.Vohra outpaced Sehwag during their stand and Kings XI’s run-rate never dipped below 10. Sehwag revealed he had promised to give Vohra one of his bats if the 21-year-old hit a century. Vohra was zooming towards the mark, with consecutive sixes off Ish Sodhi taking him to 65 as early as the ninth over. The third ball was short, and seemed set to go over the rope once more, but Vohra picked out deep midwicket. After the game, Sehwag hoped Vohra would get the bat next match. There was a brief lull after that wicket, but Sehwag powered on to his half-century before Miller took over. He caned Scott Styris for 19 in the penultimate over to bring up the 200 as Kings XI showed that even with Glenn Maxwell, Thisara Perera and George Bailey only making small contributions they could still post a mammoth total. “We ticked off the KPIs (key performance indicators) as a batting group,” Bailey said.Knights never looked like they had the necessary firepower for the chase, even with the inclusion of an extra batsman in Daniel Harris. What slim chances they had became even slimmer once Kane Williamson departed attempting a ramp shot, and Anton Devcich was caught off a reverse-sweep. Maxwell’s direct hit ran out the experienced Styris, before the spinners took over on a surface providing them a little help. Legspinner Karanveer Singh picked up four as Knights’ lower order keeled over without a fight, leaving them with a horrendous net run-rate which virtually rules them out of the semi-final race.

Philander targets new-ball damage

South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander believes the key to succeeding in Sri Lankan conditions lies in picking up wickets while the ball is still new. Philander, on his first Test tour of Sri Lanka, feels that seam bowlers can fetch wickets in spin-friendly surfaces by maintaining a simple off-stump line and making the batsmen play.”The more damage you can do with the new ball the better,” Philander said on Monday in Galle two days before the first Test. “You want batsmen five, six and seven batting against a newish nut. In these conditions you want to be striking with the new ball, our lines upfront need to get the batsmen to play.”I wouldn’t really say that lengths change, its more the line of attack. You need to sit on that off-stump line, and make sure you get the lbw into the game, the wider ball becomes the nick-off. Hopefully we can adjust really quickly and assess conditions accordingly.”Philander said he had recovered from the viral infection that ruled him out of the third ODI in Hambantota on Saturday. If he makes the starting XI, it will be his first Test in the subcontinent. Since his Test debut in 2011, Philander has played the majority of his 23 Tests at home in South Africa and toured England, Australia and New Zealand. He played two Tests in the UAE last year – his first Test series in Asia – where he picked up six wickets in two games.Spinners have performed well in Galle but Philander was hopeful of getting some swing, given the occasional showers.”There is a bit of moisture and overhead conditions around which will favour the swing bowlers,” he said. “We have to wait and see what the deck looks like tomorrow and on the morning of the Test.”Philander was also confident his team would be able to negate the threat of Sri Lanka’s lead spinner Rangana Herath, who has 48 wickets at this ground, the second-highest behind Muttiah Muralitharan (111).”Spin is always a factor when you come to the subcontinent. That’s why they prepare wickets to suit their bowlers,” Philander said. “He (Herath) is going to be a big threat, but our batsmen played him quite well in the last one-dayer in Hambantota, so hopefully we can continue to do so. I’d like to see our guys stepping up against the spinners and playing them to the best of their abilities.”

T&T hand Leeward innings defeat

Trinidad & Tobago thumped Leeward Islands by an innings and 107 runs for their second win in as many games of the Regional Four Day Competition.Opting to bat first, T&T declared their innings at 458 for 7, driven by a maiden first-class ton from Akeal Hosein and fifties from Evin Lewis, Darren Bravo, Jonathan Augustus and Stephen Katwaroo. The batsmen put together solid stands, ending with a 197-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Katwaroo and Hosein, who ended with an unbeaten 102 off 185 balls.Leeward were blown away by T&T in their first innings, folding for 113 in a little more than 34 overs. Jahmar Hamilton’s 52 was the sole substantial knock in an innings where only one other batsman scored in double figures.Following on, with a deficit of 345, Leeward improved their batting performance in the second innings but, in spite of a fifty from Kieran Powell, scored only 238. A few Leeward batsmen got starts but Powell was the only one to reach fifty as the side floundered against legpsinner Imran Khan and pacer Shannon Gabriel. Khan finished with 5 for 53, his seventh five-for in first-class cricket, while Gabriel accounted for both openers in his 3 for 63.T&T, however, suffered a blow as Hosein was taken off the field during the final session of the third day with a thigh strain. As a result, he will miss the team’s next game against Barbados on Friday. Daron Cruickshank will come in for Hosein.Kirk Edwards struck his eighth first-class hundred in Barbados’ draw against Combined Campuses and Colleges, ensuring the defending champions took two extra points over their opponents at the end of the match.Edwards struck 109 off 204 balls and was involved in a 180-run, second-wicket partnership with Barbados captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who scored 91. Barbados struggled after a middle-order slide but Shane Dowrich and Carlos Brathwaite corrected the course of the innings with a 63-run partnership for the sixth wicket that helped the side declare at 356 for 9, earning a lead of 87 over CC&C.Earlier, CC&C managed only 269 in spite of fifties from three of their top four batsmen. Shacaya Thomas, Kyle Corbin and Chadwick Walton all hit half-centuries but CC&C lost wickets in clusters to squander their advantage. Kavem Hodge and Jomel Warrican boosted CC&C with a useful 56-run stand for the ninth wicket, before the side was dismissed for 269. Sulieman Benn was the most successful bowler for Barbados, dismissing two top-order batsmen before returning to wrap up the tail for figures of 4 for 66.Corbin followed his fifty in the first innings with another unbeaten half-century in the second, after the side was jolted by quick wickets. CC&C eventually scored 101 for 5 with Ashley Nurse and Benn ending as the key strikers for Barbados once again.Guyana and Windward Islands played out a thrilling draw at the Providence Stadium. Both the teams held the advantage at different points during the match, and in the end, Guyana’s tail held on to force a stalemate. It was Windward Islands who wrested the momentum early on, as batting first, they made 307 on the back of a century from Sunil Ambris (114) and his 156-run association for the fifth wicket with the captain Liam Sebastien. Christopher Barnwell was the pick of Guyana’s bowlers, and snared four scalps.Kenroy Peters then enforced Windward Island’s advantage by finishing with 4 for 42 to run through Guyana for 213, with Assad Fudadin’s 82 the only score of note. The hosts, however, fought back strongly as Veerasammy Permaul took seven wickets to dismiss Windward Islands for 114, setting Guyana a seemingly easy target of 209.At 117 for 3 and with more than 20 overs in the day still remaining, Guyana would’ve hoped to push on for victory, but three quick wickets from Kenroy Peters left the hosts soon precariously placed at 153 for 7. Anthony Bramble and Permaul then negotiated the final few overs safely as the contest ended in a draw.

Notts ease drop fears with draw

Nottinghamshire eased their relegation worries by picking up two valuable bowling bonus points at Lord’s before their Championship Division One game against Middlesex ended in a weather-ravaged draw.Chris Rogers took his overnight 67 to 108, the fourth first-class hundred of a memorable summer for Australia’s Ashes opener, but then became the first of four scalps for Andre Adams as Middlesex, who resumed on 96 for 0, reached 353 for 7 declared.Somerset’s win against bottom club Surrey pushed Nottinghamshire down into seventh place in the Division One table, but on 132 points they are 12 ahead of Derbyshire, who crashed to defeat against Durham. After the final day’s first session was ruled out to more bad weather it was just a case for both teams of playing for bonus points after a resumption at 1.10pm following an early lunch. Rogers was in aggressive mood, flashing Adams between third slip and gully for one of his eventual 12 fours and then uppercutting a short ball from Harry Gurney to square third man for six.A superbly timed back-foot force to the ropes through point off Luke Fletcher took Rogers to his century but the left-hander fell just five runs short of completing 1000 Championship runs for the season – in only his 11th appearance for Middlesex. Going for another pull, this time against Adams, the Middlesex captain skied to Fletcher at mid-on after batting for 155 balls and dominating an opening stand of 151 with Sam Robson, who edged behind on 41 in Adams’s next over.Dawid Malan had helped Joe Denly to add 49 for the third wicket when, to Samit Patel’s second ball of the day, he aimed a drive and was bowled for 15 by the left-arm spinner. Denly, 42 not out at tea, went on to reach 63 from 76 balls before being bowled by Gurney, with the left-arm paceman squaring him up with a fine delivery from around the wicket.Neil Dexter then thick-edged Gurney to Michael Lumb in the gully as, on 9, he pushed hard at another ball angled in but straightening a little off the pitch, while Gareth Berg fell for 26 to the second new ball when he gave Adams a return catch.John Simpson’s punchy 51 not out, though, from 74 balls and with six fours, guided Middlesex past 350 and a fourth batting point, despite Ollie Rayner falling lbw to Adams.Nottinghamshire’s David Hussey suffered a finger injury while fielding that caused a cut, but he should be fine for next Saturday’s Yorkshire Bank 40 final against Glamorgan. Director of cricket Mick Newell said: “It’s not dislocated and it’s not broken so it shouldn’t be any problem with regard to next week’s final.”

Tanvir's burst sets up victory

Sohail Tanvir’s devastating early burst of pace bowling enabled one-day specialists Hampshire to leapfrog Essex to second in YB40 Group B with a 30-run win at the Ageas Bowl.

But Napier is never to be underestimated in such situations and with Masters as a willing aid, the eighth wicket pair caused Hampshire hearts to flutter in a productive stand of 42 in six overs.Only then did Wood and Tanvir return to the attack and the Essex challenge died as Hampshire went above them in the table.

Southee leads late rally after Root sparkles

Just as England appeared to have wrestled control away through a stand of 123 between Joe Root and Jonathan Trott, New Zealand surged back late in the day by taking 4 for 12

The Report by Andrew McGlashan at Lord's18-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJoe Root’s innings guided England into a strong position but their fortunes swung late in the day•Getty Images

This match refuses to reveal a favourite. Just as England appeared to have wrestled control away through a stand of 123 between Joe Root and Jonathan Trott, New Zealand surged back late in the day by taking 4 for 12, led by Tim Southee, to leave the contest tantalisingly balanced with the home side leading by 205 in conditions offering assistance to all bowlers.Despite how the day ended, England’s advantage is not inconsiderable on this surface. New Zealand will almost certainly have to score more than their first innings 207 to secure victory. Lord’s pitches have, over recent years, got better for batting (or at least harder for wicket-taking) deeper into the match but this surface does not appear set to follow that trend and the ball continues to swing. Their was less movement, though, when the sun popped out so New Zealand will look skywards. Either side Root and Trott, 12 wickets fell for 100 on the third day.Root, having played outstandingly for his 71, was the first to fall during a collapse that began in the final hour, when he inside-edged Southee into the stumps playing a shot that was not as tight as the majority he had so correctly produced. Then Southee beat Jonny Bairstow with a full delivery that clipped the pads and Matt Prior’s difficult game continued when he completed a pair by pulling softly to square leg. It was the first pair at Lord’s by an England player picked, in a significant part, for their batting since Mark Ramprakash against West Indies in 1995.A compelling passage of play continued when Kane Williamson, finding considerable turn that will give Graeme Swann every chance of being a match-winner, ripped one through the gate to bowl Trott (who had earlier been dropped at slip off the same bowler on 49) and suddenly the ill Ian Bell, who had spent the majority of New Zealand’s innings off the field and the morning of the third day at the team hotel, had to emerge at No. 8 behind nightwatchman Steven Finn.Root’s innings was exceptional. England were wobbling on 36 for 2 – a lead of 61 – when he arrived, after Alastair Cook’s problems with Trent Boult continued by edging a drive to third slip (his fourth dismissal against him in the four Tests this year) and Nick Compton was beaten by an inswinger from Neil Wagner in the next over. The stand that followed was comfortably the highest of the match.Until Root dragged on the only moments of unease came with running between the wickets. A better throw from Brendon McCullum at cover would have found him short on 40; in the process of collecting the ball and trying to break the stumps, BJ Watling damaged his knee and needed to leave the field, which forced McCullum to take the gloves (although not the conventional keeping pads, instead using shinguards under his trousers).Twice on 54 Root came close to being run out again. Martin Guptill, on as sub and New Zealand’s best fielder, missed the stumps then Root had to dive for his ground after another poor call. Each time, however, he managed to refocus. Perhaps the occasionally frantic running was a result of England’s increased urgency. They certainly appeared more intent on not letting the bowlers settle and Root was central to this with numerous tip-and-runs.He was strong square of the wicket, both cutting and driving elegantly off the back foot with a hint of his mentor Michael Vaughan, as he brought up his second Test fifty off 78 balls – rapid in the context of this game, if not quite Ross Taylor pace. The swiftness of footwork stood out, too, especially when he latched on to short deliveries from Bruce Martin, who did not have the same stifling effect of the first innings. Trott, meanwhile, played as he so often does and provided a reassuring presence at the other end although Root does not strike you as someone who needs calming in the middle. The two teams continue to prove closer than the rankings would suggest. New Zealand began the day in the slightly stronger position, but they were quickly knocked back and their last six wickets fell for 52 as James Anderson received the support that had been lacking the previous day, with him and Finn sharing nine wickets.England made the ideal start by removing McCullum in the first full over. He could have taken the game by scruff of the neck in a session but got a thin outside edge as he drove at Stuart Broad who, after being too short yesterday, immediately gained reward by pitching the ball up. McCullum thought he may have clipped his pad, not the ball, and used the DRS but there was a clear mark on Hot Spot. With McCullum gone, England knew the risk of New Zealand racing away had diminished. Williamson, who took a painful blow in the box against the much-improved Broad and needed a few minutes to compose himself, moved to an excellent fifty from 158 balls – his back-foot play through off side continuing to stand out – before falling in the same manner to Root on Friday when he glanced down the leg side against Anderson who went on to complete his fourth five-wicket haul at Lord’s when he beat Martin with a beauty to take off stump.Finn, although remaining inconsistent, played his part in dispatching the lower order. He benefited from a disappointing lack of self-control from Southee who had clubbed three boundaries in three balls and could not resist hacking at a short delivery that was simply taken at cover. It was a waste. Finn also claimed the last two to end with somewhat flattering figures, although his strike-rate of 47.1 should not be overlooked. However, like England, there is still improvement needed.

Cairns takes aim at accusers

Chris Cairns has taken aim at his accusers and again claimed he was innocent of match-fixing allegations made against him

ESPNcricinfo staff30-May-2014Chris Cairns has taken aim at his accusers and again claimed he was innocent of match-fixing allegations made against him. Cairns was interviewed by the Metropolitan Police, the ECB and the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit in London this week, and after arriving back in Auckland on Friday he read a prepared statement to the waiting media. As part of the statement, Cairns said two former New Zealand players and one current New Zealand player had also given evidence, apart from Lou Vincent and Brendon McCullum. However, he claimed that the players had made no direct allegations against him and that their evidence related to McCullum claiming he had spoken to them about an alleged approach from Cairns.”Based on the information I was provided in London, I now understand that there were two past players and one current New Zealand player who Mr McCullum said he spoke to about the alleged approach,” Cairns said. “Two of these men made statements supporting Mr McCullum’s claim that he spoke to them. The third man told investigators his memory was foggy and he could not make a statement in support of Mr McCullum.”Cairns also took issue with the fact that it took McCullum nearly three years to report to the ICC the alleged approach made in 2008. Cairns also claimed that allegations made against him by Vincent were a case of Vincent seeking “to mitigate his sins by blaming others”.”In 2008, he [Vincent] had a lot of problems that he has admitted to,” Cairns said. “I endeavoured to become a friend to him in these difficult times. He has betrayed the friendship I offered him. He now seeks to portray himself as a whistle-blower. He is nothing of the sort.”Cairns claimed the interviews in London were conducted at his own request and dealt with allegations he had perjured himself during the Cairns v Modi trial in 2012, and separate allegations of match-fixing.”I was not arrested or otherwise detained in London and I have not been charged with any offence, criminal or otherwise,” Cairns said. “I repeat that each and every allegation against me, that I have cheated at cricket or attempted to induce others to cheat at cricket, is false.”Cairns claimed that the ICC had not interviewed him over match-fixing allegations in the past and he “decided to travel 40,000 kilometres to make clear to the police, ICC and ECB that these allegations are false and that I have nothing to hide”.
