Vertonghen’s Tottenham future uncertain as he eyes longer deal

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham are at risk of losing Jan Vertonghen as he wants a longer extension than 12 months, according to The Telegraph.

What’s the word?

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side are on the verge of major changes as the club eagerly awaits a move to their new stadium, while they could also lose the services of a number of key figures at the club in the coming months.

Amongst those with an uncertain future is experienced central defender Jan Vertonghen, who sees his current deal come to a close at the end of the season – although Spurs do have the option to trigger a 12-month extension.

However, The Telegraph states that Vertonghen wants a longer contract and it is merely the tip of the iceberg in a contract situation that could tear the heart out of Spurs’ squad.

What’s the issue?

Vertonghen could be one of the first dominos to fall in Tottenham’s squad, potentially alongside defensive partner Toby Alderweireld, but the Belgium pair are not the only players that Tottenham could lose unless they fork out to offer lucrative deals.

Christian Eriksen and Eric Dier both have less than two years left on their deals in North London and have courted the attention of top European sides, while Danny Rose, Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies could also push for an exit.

What should Spurs do?

If Tottenham want to remain amongst the elite in the Premier League and contest with the biggest sides on the European stage, then Daniel Levy must change his stance regarding finances to retain the services of key players.

Vertonghen, Eriksen and Dier should all be considered as players that Spurs cannot afford to lose but the issue is that their stadium move could leave to financial implications and breaking the current wage structure could change everything.

If the higher-earners get an increase in their pay, the middle-ranking players and even those at the lowest end of the spectrum are also likely to demand more and it leaves Tottenham on the brink of entering a vicious circle.

Aston Villa refuse to accept less than £35m for Grealish, fans react

After Aston Villa failed to earn promotion to the Premier League following defeat to Fulham in the Championship playoff final, attention turned to Jack Grealish’s future.

The 22-year-old has had some controversial moments in his career so far, but he has also become one of Villa’s most important players.

Since dropping into the Championship, Grealish has scored eight goals and created 10 assists.

The young midfielder has struggled with injuries of late, but he has regularly been linked with a move elsewhere.

Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the rumoured suitors, but according to a recent report in the Daily Mail, Villa have been left insulted by Daniel Levy’s £20m offer.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257600″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Aston Villa’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]

The publication claims that the Midlands outfit will not accept anything less than £35m, which is a hefty figure considering that Grealish is yet to prove himself at an elite level.

On Twitter, Villa fans have discussed the valuation of the midfielder, and some believe that it is a fair price.

In Focus: Perisic slips further away from Manchester United

Inter Milan will not include a release clause in a new contract for Manchester United target Ivan Perisic, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

What’s the word?

The Red Devils were linked to the Croatian all summer, but a deal was unable to be agreed before the transfer deadline.

The Express claims that Inter refused to drop below their £48m asking price, and as a result, prospect of a deal fizzled out.

Jose Mourinho made it clear that he wanted four new signings, but he ended up with three – Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

If the Portuguese coach was considering moving for Perisic in January, he may need to re-think amid news that Inter are planning to make it very difficult for any suitors to nab the winger’s signature.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian outfit plan to offer Perisic a contract until 2022, but a release clause will not be inserted.

The 28-year-old’s current deal expires in three years’ time.

Do United need him?

The wide area was worth addressing in the summer for Mourinho, but now that the season has begun, it has not emerged as a problem.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have proven to be worthy options, with both impressing in the early stages of the campaign.

The pair have featured in all three Premier League matches, with Martial starting just the one and Rashford being named in the first XI for the other two.

The England international has contributed with one goal and an assist, while Martial has scored twice and made another.

Both players have displayed strong senses of character that would have impressed Mourinho.

Last season, Martial was in and out of the team due to his manager not being convinced that he deserved regular game time.

Since then, the 21-year-old has knuckled down and given his Portuguese coach something to think about.

Rashford has consistently performed since breaking into the first team, but the 19-year-old has shown maturity, particularly on the international stage for England when he recovered from a mistake to score in a crucial World Cup qualifier this week.

Right now, Mourinho has some strong options to call upon, so perhaps missing out on Perisic was not the end of the world.

Why Allegri could be the perfect manager to rebuild Arsenal

It is beginning to appear as though, finally, change is coming to Arsenal this summer. The Gunners have toyed with mediocrity for the best part of a decade, and with Arsene Wenger’s tenure at the helm seemingly coming to a close – it is time for change at the Emirates.

Of course, Wenger could yet remain at the club, but it would make sense for the Arsenal brass to have one eye firmly on the future. If they haven’t already, they must very soon begin to consider who might take over the mantle from their current manager. A host of names have been touted with the move, Massimiliano Allegri is the perfect man for the job.

We’ve seen at Stamford Bridge the sort of impact that Italian managers are beginning to have in England, and given that Allegri and Conte’s career paths have followed upon fairly similar paths lately – could Arsenal be the next club to secure an Italian job?

Bringing the current Juventus manager to the Emirates certainly makes a lot of sense. On a basic level, you only have to look at the success that he has achieved whilst at the helm of The Old Lady of Turin. He was certainly successful with AC Milan, having picked up a Serie A title in his debut season, but the awards have been coming thick and fast since making the switch to the Juventus Stadium. He has picked up a further two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies and even won the coveted Serie A Coach of the Year award an impressive three times. Simply put, Allegri is a serial winner – and Arsenal have been serial losers in recent years.

His qualities extend beyond just getting results, though, with his management style also perfect for the Emirates. Arsenal have been accused of laziness in recent weeks, and that is an issue that Allegri would certainly sort out. You only have to look at his recent issues with Leonardo Bonucci, with the pair recently having a high-profile bust-up. Now, certainly, Arsenal won’t want him to start falling out with players – but the addition of discipline at a club that has seemingly been lacking it could be huge. The fact that the argument was made following a 4-1 win against Palermo indicates that his desire to impress also extends beyond just securing victories. This all feeds back into his drive to always be at 100% and ensuring that he is always getting the best out of his players – a trait that Wenger has arguably lost lately.

There is certainly an argument to be had surrounding the nature of Wenger’s management, with his one-dimensional style likely playing a significant role in Arsenal’s struggles lately. The Frenchman clearly has his own methods, but his inability to change those habits is costing the Gunners. This is, again, something that Allegri will not be a victim of – with the manager regularly utilising formations based on particular games and particular opponents. For example, against an attacking side he might look to play with a five-man defence, whilst he might then shift back to a four-man defence a week later. When Antonio Conte left Juventus, Allegri chose to continue with his 3-5-2 formation for a while, before deciding to shift it up for a particular fixture. That desire to pick a side and pick a formation based on a particular opponent is vital, and it is a trait that Arsenal have lacked.

Bringing in a manager that has never been in the Premier League is certainly a risk, but for Arsenal, it is one that makes sense. Allegri has come in and made an immediate impact in his career, and Arsenal desperately need a manager that can do that. If Wenger does go, Allegri could be the man.

Arsenal star misses England training due to knee complaint

Arsenal star Danny Welbeck has picked up a knee problem ahead of England duty, being unable to participate in their first training session this week, according to reports from the Express.

Welbeck has been in fine form for the Gunners after recovering from a knee operation that kept him out of action for almost the entire campaign, scoring in their latest 2-0 win over Everton this past weekend.

However, Arsenal and the Football Association made an agreement to take care of the striker during the international break, and is now receiving treatment on his left knee at St. George’s Park.

This will come as a big blow to the Three Lions, who are concerned over his fitness before their friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands.

The 25-year-old is one of England boss Roy Hodgson’s favourite players due to his versatility, being able to play in any of the three attacking positions up front.

Welbeck has only featured nine times for Arsenal this season, scoring four goals.
