Liverpool: Fans are in dreamland as Curtis Jones scoops Player of the Season award

Liverpool’s rapidly-rising star Curtis Jones has been named the Premier League 2 Player of the Season.

The young Merseyside local scooped the award after an impressive season for Liverpool’s under-23 side. His 14 goal contributions in the reserve league added to an impressive overall campaign tally of 17 goals and seven assists (via Transfermarkt).

Following on from his influential performances for the youth side, Jones was called up to join the senior squad and it seems unlikely he will play for the under-23s again after his achievements. The teenager played a huge role in Liverpool’s FA Cup run this season, netting the only goal of the match against a full-strength Everton side back in January.

His superb strike carried the Reds into the next round, where he also found the back of the net against Shrewsbury Town.

Loads of Liverpool fans have responded to the news and are full of praise for the young trailblazer. However, one fan in particular has taken a swipe at Manchester City, tweeting “don’t let Pep see this”. The comment comes after Pep Guardiola had a negative response to Jordan Henderson winning the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Sunderland: Midfield target rejects new deal with Hartlepool United

Sunderland target Josh Hawkes has rejected a new contract offer from Hartlepool United, according to Hartlepool Mail.

Wholesome changes are expected to be made this summer at the Stadium of Light after Phil Parkinson’s side failed to gain promotion to the Championship.

A second successive failure to get themselves out of the English third-tier will now put added pressure on the shoulders of Parkinson, who guided his side to an eighth-placed finish in the League One standings.

With a number of first team regulars set to leave the club on a free transfer, reports have emerged linking Hawkes with a move to the Wearside club.

Hawkes, who impressed for Hartlepool over the course of the 2019/2020 season, is also being courted by a number of Premier League sides such as Burnley and Sheffield United, whilst Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town, Hull City and Barnsley are also said to be keen.

The 21-year-old will have a tough choice to make come July 1 after he rejected fresh terms with Hartlepool, as reported by the Hartlepool Mail.

Portuguese club Braga have also been labelled with interest in Hawkes, who has netted 13 goals in 63 games for Pool.

It seems like a no brainer for Sunderland to make a move for Hawkes, especially given the list of interested teams in his services.

A free transfer would be ideal for Black Cats’ boss Parkinson, who could then go on to spend cash elsewhere. However, they may find it difficult to clinch a deal if a club from one of the two higher divisions in England make a move.

Do you think Hawkes would be a good free transfer for Sunderland to make? Let us know in the comments section below…

Van Dijk makes admission about 100m sprint race

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk invited fans on Twitter to partake in a Q&A on Tuesday evening. In the absence of regular football matches, fans have been starved of the opportunity to see their heroes in action, but van Dijk’s social media interaction did something to bridge the gap between supporters and players.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Hoards of questions flooded in for the Netherlands international to consider, and one question prompted a rather surprising answer.

Indeed, the former Celtic and Southampton star was asked who would win in a 100m sprint between him, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

His answer: himself or Gomez.

Given Robertson’s speed is one of the most outstanding and impressive qualities in his repertoire, the response certainly caught the eye.

Perhaps this was merely van Dijk’s way of subtly taking a dig at Robertson, but the Scotland international, who is valued at £72m by Transfermarkt, refused to take the bait if that was indeed the intention.

The 28-year-old has a tendency to glide across the turf in an effortless manner which suggests he always has an extra gear to find, so perhaps he could beat the flying left-back in a 100m sprint.

For now, however, we’ll just have to take van Dijk’s word for it.

West Ham can take inspiration from Duncan Ferguson

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Steve Potts and Kevin Keen may be handed the reigns at West Ham United if Manuel Pellegrini is sacked, according to Football Insider.

The Chilean is likely to be dismissed if West Ham lose against Southampton on the weekend, having won just one of his last 10 games in all competitions.

This would mean that there will be an opportunity to take temporary charge while a long-term alternative is found.

It is suggested in the report that the two coaches, who are currently with the U23s and U18s respectively, will be the men to take up that role.

This may seem like a fairly small thing to do given that it shouldn’t last too long, but the pair could play a substantial part in the resurrection of West Ham’s form.

The duo and indeed the club, should look to Everton for their inspiration, more specifically, the impact Duncan Ferguson has had since Marco Silva was sacked.

Whether he will get the job full-time is a completely different question, but he has definitely played his part in changing the mood at Goodison Park against Chelsea.

Images of the Scotsman running down the touchline and hugging ballboys, alongside the three points, will have helped to bring the feel-good factor back to the club as they beat the Blues on Merseyside last weekend.

He also had an impact on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored a brace, as the striker told Everton’s official channels: “[Personally] it was about repaying the work Duncan has done with me over the past three years.

“I have worked closely with Duncan, we have a good relationship and that’s why I ran to him when I scored my second goal.”

A football legend: How much do you know about the late, great Bobby Moore? Test your knowledge below…

This means that even if he doesn’t end up getting the role, Ferguson has definitely made his impact on Everton during his time as interim manager.

Potts and Keen should be looking at this as proof that they can make their own impact at West Ham if they are given the chance.

They will have to buy into the club’s ethos to ensure it happens.

In other news, Pellegrini looked like a man on the edge after West Ham lost against Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Christian Eriksen’s success with Denmark

Christian Eriksen is currently at a crossroads with Tottenham Hotspur.

The great Dane’s contract is due to expire next summer and with no signs of Spurs actually managing to convince him to sign a new one, the two parties separating is more than just a possibility in the not too distant future.

This really goes hand in hand with the club’s current poor run of form, seeing how the Lilywhites are struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League and falling as deep as 14th place in the table.

But Eriksen is doing well with his national team as they have recently secured a spot in the upcoming European championship, and Tottenham Hotspur’s official account quickly shared that update on social media on Monday.

Needless to say, the fans did not really appreciate it as they were quick to slam Eriksen, either criticising him or simply saying they don’t care about him at all.

Some fans even pretended they don’t even know the player at this point anymore.

Leeds destined to lose vital defender Ben White next season whatever happens

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Leeds United defender Ben White has been one of the Championship’s standout players this season and has helped Marcelo Bielsa’s side to become the best defensive team in the league, conceding just seven goals.

White has played every minute of league action so far and has averaged a very respectable 7.33 rating in that time. The 22-year-old has even played both League Cup fixtures this season, starting one and coming off the bench for the other, as he continues to prove how vital he is for Leeds’ backline.

However, as the Whites failed to pencil in an option to buy when he signed on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, it seems unlikely that the 6 foot 1 Englishman will be at Elland Road next season, especially if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Furthermore, not only will the Seagulls surely do what they can to keep him after such stellar form, it should be expected that White will be subject to heavy transfer speculation as a result. The defender is already being linked with a £20m move to Liverpool, as the Reds look to replace Dejan Lovren for the future.

Of course, it will be tough for anybody to turn down the Merseyside giants right now, considering they hold the European crown and are on a very positive course to win the Premier League title. White may not become a regular for Liverpool, but would surely consider such a lucrative move over a stay at Elland Road or even the Amex.

Truthfully, Leeds will not have a say in either matter, as White appears destined to depart regardless. Should that be the case, the Yorkshire club will miss the defender greatly especially considering he has averaged 2.4 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per game so far in the league.

Leeds and Bielsa must consider these reports and the inevitability that White will be returning to Brighton and therefore delve into the market for a new centre-back, with Gaetano Berardi also out of contract at the same time as White leaves.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford wishes Bobby Charlton happy birthday

Bobby Charlton turned 82 on Friday. The England and Manchester United legend was undoubtedly overwhelmed with messages on social media on his big day, so much so that his name actually trended on Twitter for a little while.Amongst the thousands of well wishes for the World Cup winner, one stood out more than most.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, Marcus Rashford wished the United legend a happy birthday in a brilliant way.

The striker revealed how much he looks up to Charlton as he posted an advert from several years ago that starred the former midfielder.

The advert was unforgettable, as Sir Bobby rolled back the years to smash a shot into the top corner past a group of children, but unbeknownst to many, there was a future United star in the background.

Indeed, Rashford revealed that he was an extra in the Actimel advert that featured the United legend, and he used that fact to pay tribute to the former Red Devils captain.

West Brom’s Semi Ajayi could be key to stopping concerning trend

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

West Brom will be looking to continue one remarkable trend while trying to eradicate another on Saturday as they head to west London to face Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

The Baggies are unbeaten so far this season – the only side in the Championship – as they sit fourth with four wins and four draws to their name.

However, they are yet to keep a clean sheet.

In fact, 15 of their 16 league points have been won from a losing position, per Transfermarkt, which means in 94% of their matches they have gone behind and still earned a result – and they somehow remain unbeaten doing so.

This is something that Football FanCast have previously outlined as a pressing concern.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

That unwanted record is probably one of the only things going against Slaven Bilic making it a perfect start as Albion boss, and that may not change this weekend as QPR are one place below the west Midlands club only on goal difference.

The Rs rank second for average goals per game at 3.25 with West Brom closely following behind at 3.13, so this game could be high-scoring. QPR have also conceded in 88% of their matches too.

With this in mind, if Bilic wants to pick up his first clean sheet of the campaign, the key battle could be between Semi Ajayi and Nahki Wells.

On the Chalkboard

Despite lacking a clean sheet, the 25-year-old has become an important figure in the heart of the defence for the Croatian.

At £1.5m, he’s been quite the steal, winning 3.8 aerial duels per game on average on top of making 2.9 clearances per match too.

This is one area where he can dominate the 5 foot 7 forward as his height will make a huge difference, even without considering that Wells has averaged just 0.2 successful aerial duels a game.

Though, he’s still scored five goals in just four starts which is an impressive return, clearly making him the most significant threat on Saturday. The 29-year-old is also averaging 2.6 shots per game.

Ajayi will need to be better in the tackle having made just 0.6 per game so far this season as the Bermudan is often dispossessed of the ball at an average of 1.5 times per match.

If West Brom want to start earning clean sheets, they’ll have to combat strikers like these as soon as possible.
