Payne the hero with bat and ball as Gloucestershire seal low-scorer

Hampshire scrap hard in defence of 124 but come up short against veteran seamer

David Payne deployed all his considerable experience to propel Gloucestershire to a dramatic two-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks in a low-scoring but memorable Vitality Blast contest at the Seat Unique Stadium.Chasing a modest 125 to win and buoyed by D’Arcy Short’s 41-ball 49, Gloucestershire were cruising at 112 for 4 in the 16th, only to then lose four wickets for the addition of 11 runs to set-up a nerve-jangling finale. With the scores level, Payne kept his composure to lift the final ball, bowled by Chris Wood, over long-on for an astonishing last-gasp match-winning six.The veteran left arm seamer had earlier claimed 3 for 20 from four overs to undermine Hampshire’s top-order and help restrict the visitors to 124 for 9 after they had been inserted on a characteristically slow Bristol pitch. Josh Shaw and Ben Charlesworth weighed in with two wickets apiece and Miles Hammond claimed a remarkable five catches as Gloucestershire picked up a second win in as many games to keep alive their outside hopes of making the quarter-finals.Without a win in their last five games, Hampshire missed an opportunity to move above Glamorgan and back into top-four contention.Looking to follow up his half-century made against Somerset 24 hours earlier, Hampshire skipper James Vince enjoyed a moment of good fortune before he had even got off the mark, being dropped by Graeme van Buuren at extra cover off the bowling of Payne. But there was no such escape for fellow opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius who was held on the deep square leg boundary by Short later in the same over as Gloucestershire effected an early breakthrough.Payne struck another telling blow in his next over, persuading Vince to sky a catch to Miles Hammond at mid-off and depart for 7 with the score 9 for 2. Toby Albert poached a trio of boundaries at the expense of Matt Taylor and Shaw to afford the innings much-needed impetus, but he was bowled by Payne for 16 off the final ball of a powerplay that yielded an underwhelming return of 29 for 3.If Hampshire were reliant upon overseas star Dewald Brevis, they were disappointed. Having taken slow left armer Tom Smith for a six and a four in the seventh, the South African chanced his arm once too often, aiming an extravagant pull shot at a shortish delivery from Charlesworth and succeeding only in finding deep midwicket. He had contributed 13 and the Hawks were 49 for 4 and under the pump. The middle order did not respond well to pressure, Joe Weatherley hoisting Charlesworth to deep midwicket for 18 and Eddie Jack served up a carbon copy dismissal in the next over, falling to van Buuren’s slow left arm without scoring as Hampshire lurched to 67 for 6. Shaw returned at the Ashley Down Road end to remove James Fuller for 17, superbly caught on the run by Ollie Price at long-on as Gloucestershire continued to turn the screw.Liam Dawson followed Fuller back to the pavilion soon afterwards, brilliant held by Hammond in the deep off the bowling of Matt Taylor, and when Benny Howell hit Shaw high to long-on and fell for 14, the Hawks were 100 for 9 in the eighteenth. A late flurry from the last wicket pair of Wood and Scott Currie, who added an unbeaten 24, was not sufficient to paper over the cracks.Hammond and Short staged a brisk opening stand of 30 in five overs to afford the reply reassuring momentum. Hampshire desperately needed to take early wickets and Jack yorked Hammond for 22, but Short continued to apply pressure, carting Wood for two sixes as the home side posted 46 for 1 in the powerplay.Although England spinner Dawson snared Cameron Bancroft lbw without scoring, it did little to slow West Country progress, Price joining Short in staging a partnership of 32 for the fourth wicket to bring the required rate down to a run a ball.Price contributed 22 before slapping a short ball from Wood to midwicket and Howell then accounted for Jack Taylor with the score 87 for 4 in the 14th. Short had accrued three fours and three sixes and had his sights set on what would have been a maiden 50 in Gloucestershire colours when he top-edged Fuller to short third. Hampshire made the home side work hard for their runs and Howell bowled Charlesworth in the penultimate over before Wood removed Matt Taylor and van Buuren in the last to set-up a tense finale.Shaw scrambled a single off the next ball to bring the scores level and Payne calmed any nerves by smiting the final ball over long-on for six to send the crowd into raptures.

Here's a detailed look at Nottingham Forest's top 10 earners… 10 Dilane Bakwa £70,000 per week

One of many to sign for Nottingham Forest in 2025, Dilane Bakwa arrived at the City Ground after impressing in France with Strasbourg.

The winger signed a five-year deal with the Reds on deadline day, earning £3.64m a season.

9 Murillo £75,000 per week

Murillo has proven to be an excellent signing for Nottingham Forest after joining back in 2023.

A number of European giants were circling for the Brazilian defender, however, he signed a new improved five-year deal to stay with Forest in 2025.

8 Ibrahim Sangare £75,000 per week

Ibrahim Sangare was Forest’s record signing when he joined from PSV Eindhoven in 2023, signing a five-year deal worth £75,000 per week.

The Ivory Coast international only made 17 Premier League appearances in his first full campaign and 13 in his second season, though.

7 Dan Ndoye £85,000 per week

Dan Ndoye signed for Nottingham Forest from Serie A side Bologna after the Reds qualified for the Europa League.

Costing around £34m, the Switzerland international signed a five-year deal and is in line to recieve a total of £22.1m in wages during his time at the club.

6 Callum Hudson-Odoi £90,000 per week

Winger Callum Hudson-Odoi also picks up an eye-catching £90,000 per week, with Forest landing the attacker from Chelsea for an initial £3m in 2023.

That has proven to be a shrewd signing so far, with the Englishman chipping in with numerous goals and assists with his direct play.

5 Chris Wood £90,000 per week

Chris Wood initially joined on loan from Newcastle United in 2023, with that move becoming permanent months later after Forest remained in the Premier League.

The New Zealand international has used all of his experience to become first choice and is now the club’s all-time record scorer in the Premier League.

4 Nikola Milenkovic £105,000 per week

2024 signing Nikola Milenkovic swapped Fiorentina for Forest and was a regular during his first season at the City Ground alongside Murillo.

The Serbia international is under contract until 2029.

3 Morgan Gibbs-White £110,000 per week

Arguably one of Nottingham Forest’s most important players, Morgan Gibbs-White has gone from strength to strength after swapping Wolves for Forest following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

He nearly signed for Tottenham in 2025, however, at the last minute, signed a new improved contract at the City Ground on £110,000 per week.

2 Oleksandr Zinchenko £120,000 per week

Oleksandr Zinchenko signed for Forest late in the 2025 summer transfer window after the club submitted a deal sheet just before the deadline.

The Ukraine international is on a season-long loan from Arsenal, with Forest paying him over £6m in wages for the year.

1 Douglas Luiz £135,000 per week

Another loanee at the City Ground and Nottingham Forest’s top earner is midfielder Douglas Luiz, who will pick up more than £7m in wages from the Reds.

The Brazilian made the move back to the Premier League from Juventus, and there is an obligation to make a move permanent if conditions are met.

Radrizzani reveals Leeds could've replaced Marsch with two "world-class" managers

Former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has opened up on the regrets he has from his time at Elland Road, and revealed two “world-class” managers could’ve been brought in to replace Jesse Marsch.

49ers looking to establish Leeds in the Premier League

During the Radrizzani era, Leeds were unable to establish themselves as Premier League regulars, being relegated at the end of the 2022-23 campaign following a tumultuous season, with Sam Allardyce taking charge of the final four games.

Following the relegation, the club was sold to the 49ers, who, after installing Daniel Farke as manager, oversaw the Whites’ return to the top flight, and there have been encouraging signs at the start of the new season.

Despite widespread reports suggesting the owners were thinking about sacking Farke after promotion, they ultimately stuck by the German, whose side have gone on to amass eight points from their first seven games, although they arguably should’ve taken more.

It remains to be seen how costly the late goals conceded against Fulham and AFC Bournemouth are at the end of the campaign, but Farke is likely to be happy that his side remain outside the relegation zone.

The 48-year-old has twice been relegated from the Premier League, which means it was arguably a risk to stick by him, and it has now been revealed that Leeds could have appointed two established top-level managers if they’d sacked Marsch earlier.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Radrizzani said: “We spent a lot of time trying to find someone with a similar style of play as Marcelo. I regret that we didn’t change sooner. Jesse is a good coach but I could see signs of frustration and misunderstanding with the team.

“We could have had Unai Emery or Julen Lopetegui but we missed that window. Then we tried with Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola after the World Cup but it was too late. It was my responsibility.”

Farke can forget Calvert-Lewin to unleash "versatile" Leeds ace in new role

This could help Leeds become more clinical in front of goal

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 13, 2025 "World-class" Emery and Slot could've guided Leeds to safety

It is painful to see the list of managers Leeds managers missed out on, especially considering they ended the 2022-23 season with Allardyce in the dugout, with Emery and Slot going on to prove they could’ve built legacies at Elland Road.

Lauded as “world-class” by Ross Barkley, the Aston Villa manager has overseen a dramatic transformation at Villa Park, guiding them to the Champions League and Europa League in back-to-back seasons.

Slot, of course, has also gone on to prove himself at the top level, leading Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, during which time he also received high praise from Accrington Stanley boss John Doolan.

Eventually, things worked out for Leeds, with Farke restoring their Premier League status, but it is no surprise Radrizzani has major regrets about some of his decisions while at Elland Road.

Arsenal dealt Noni Madueke blow as David Ornstein shares injury return timeline

Arsenal have been handed a Noni Madueke injury blow as Mikel Arteta receives some news about the in-form summer signing.

Noni Madueke subbed off half-time with injury in Man City draw

The England winger’s electric start to life in north London has attracted due praise, with Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera arguably standing out as Andrea Berta’s finest purchases thus far.

Arteta has started Madueke in five out of Arsenal’s first six games in all competitions so far, and the England international has repaid that faith by terrorising full-backs with his trickery, burst of pace and initiative in the final third.

Just months ago, Gunners supporters were protesting the ex-Chelsea star’s arrival with a petition and ‘#NoToMadueke’ movement on social media platform X, but fast-forward to now, and those same fans are now very worried about a potential long-term injury for him.

Madueke has also shined for the Three Lions under Thomas Tuchel on international duty, and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville is among the critics to admit they’ve been left surprised by the 23-year-old’s excellent performances in an Arsenal shirt.

In place of the previously injured Bukayo Saka, Madueke dazzled on the right-wing, but Arteta now faces the prospect of being without him.

The former PSV Eindhoven forward was forced off at half-time in Arsenal’s dramatic 1-1 draw with Man City on Sunday, and there are some fears that Madueke may have suffered an ACL injury.

If that were the case, he’d face months on the sidelines, but luckily for Arteta, it appears his problem isn’t as serious as that.

That being said, he’s still set for a lengthy spell out.

Arsenal dealt Noni Madueke blow as David Ornstein shares news

The reliable David Ornstein reports that Madueke avoided an ACL tear, but will be unavailable for around two months with a knee injury, putting his return date during the November international break, meaning he could play against Tottenham on November 23.

While he is yet to get off the mark in terms of goals or assists, Madueke has been without question one of Arteta’s best players of the campaign so far, so this is undoubtedly a blow for Arsenal.

Noni Madueke form at Arsenal prompts Chelsea regret

The winger was Arsenal’s most threatening player in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool prior to the last international break, before he put in a Man of the Match display against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates, whilst also impressing in the first hour of their 5-0 win over Leeds United.

Arsenal’s new £150,000-per-week star is looking like the player who expensive flop Nicolas Pepe was supposed to be, except Madueke didn’t cost a seismic £72 million to bring in.

There are some suggestions that high-ranking Chelsea chiefs held reservations over selling Madueke to Arsenal, and so far, he’s shown exactly why.

He's a "cheat code": Man City sold bigger talent than O’Reilly for £300k

In recent seasons, Manchester City’s academy has become one of the most prominent in Europe. They have produced many fantastic players, some of whom still ply their trade at the Etihad Stadium, and others who have moved on to pastures new.

One of the best academy graduates currently in the City squad would have to be Phil Foden. Their number 47 has cemented himself as one of the key players in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

On the flip side, the Citizens let the likes of Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers leave in the last few years, both of whom are now full England internationals.

Another City academy graduate, Nico O’Reilly, could be about to make his Three Lions debut.

Why O’Reilly is in the England squad

It has been an astronomical rise to the top for 20-year-old City starlet O’Reilly. After becoming an established player in their first-team fold last season, Thomas Tuchel has taken note of his performances and drafted him into his latest England squad.

The Manchester-born City star is a versatile player and has been something of a Swiss army knife for Guardiola. He’s played 30 first-team games for his boyhood club, which have come all over the pitch.

Most often, O’Reilly has played as a left-back, but he’s played as a centre-back, right across the midfield, and even as a centre-forward.

That versatility has been hugely beneficial for City’s Spanish boss. He can deploy O’Reilly almost anywhere and get a good performance in whichever role he plays. This season, the youngster has played nine games, with seven of those appearances coming at left-back.

He even set up Erling Haaland’s second goal away to Monaco from that position.

One person who O’Reilly has impressed this season is BBC Sport tactical analyst Umir Irfan. He said that the versatile star “has been brilliant for City and a big part of their solidity in recent weeks,” which is high praise indeed.

As well as O’Reilly has performed for City, he is arguably not even their biggest talent at full-back to come from the academy in recent years.

City’s ex-academy star who’s better than O’Reilly

O’Reilly isn’t the only top prospect City have produced at full-back in recent years. Rico Lewis has also broken into Guardiola’s squad, and, like his fellow academy graduate, can operate in midfield, as Guardiola likes his full-backs to do.

Yet, one player of a vastly different profile, who City may wish they had kept hold of, is Liverpool wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutchman was once in City’s academy himself, but was sold to Celtic for just £300k back in 2019.

In hindsight, this wasn’t the best decision City have made over the years. Now plying his trade at Anfield, Frimpong cost their Premier League rivals £29.5m, following some exceptional seasons at Bayer Leverkusen.

He’s already seven games into his Liverpool career and scored on his debut in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace.

He is also a different type of full-back to O’Reilly. Operating as a winger at times with the ball, Frimpong is rapid down the right flank and has a deadly cross in his arsenal.

That is why football scout Antonio Mango described him as a “cheat code.”

In Leverkusen’s remarkable invincible season of 2023/24, the Dutchman was one of their best players. Operating at wing-back, the 24-year-old scored 14 times and assisted 12 in 47 games.

His underlying stats were incredible, too. With less defensive responsibility, he ranked in the top 13% for key passes amongst Bundesliga full-backs in the top flight, with 1.8 per 90 minutes.

O’Reilly has certainly made an excellent start to his career. Yet, with Frimpong’s contribution to a memorable Leverkusen season in 2023/24, and his major move to Liverpool this summer, it is easy to see how he could be considered a bigger talent.

Losing a player of this quality might sting City fans now. He was an academy star who was let go for a cheap price, and would have brought something unique to their current squad.

'Tops Champions League final slip!' – Fans roast Chelsea icon John Terry for 'cringe' Baller League UK rap alongside ArrDee

Chelsea legend John Terry has found himself at the centre of social media ridicule after performing a rap with British artist ArrDee at the Baller League UK. The former Blues defender, who lifted 15 trophies with the club, was labelled "cringe" and "embarrassing" by fans following his appearance alongside the rapper during Monday night’s event.

  • Terry’s rap shocks fans at Baller League

Terry, one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players, made headlines this week after taking part in a musical performance during the Baller League UK, an indoor six-a-side competition that blends football with online entertainment and features content creators alongside former pros.

The 44-year-old, who manages a team named the 26ers, joined ArrDee during the team's entrance for what appeared to be a playful diss track aimed at influencer Angry Ginge. Footage of the pair walking out together and performing quickly spread across social media, with many supporters expressing their disbelief at the sight of their former captain trying his hand at rap.

Terry, who spent his entire 22-year playing career at Stamford Bridge and won the Premier League five times, appeared in good spirits during the performance, but the online reaction was the opposite, with sections of the Chelsea fanbase calling it "painful to watch" and questioning why a club legend would involve himself in such antics.

  • Social media reaction: ‘Cringe’, ‘embarrassing’, and ‘tops the slip’

It didn’t take long for the clip to go viral, and fans across were quick to pile in with a mix of humour, disbelief, and second-hand embarrassment.

One user, @saxon_davi67265, wrote: "He's topped his most embarrassing moment in his life of slipping in a Champions League final."

Another, @ONLYONEWEEDA, admitted he felt incredibly uncomfortable watching the scenes unfold. He posted: "Jesus christ that was cringe"

    @NikBoReid simply added: "Embarrassing nonsense."

Meanwhile, @jordymaui commented: “What the f*ck is this?", followed by several crying laughing emojis.

And @pusb1991 questioned those who watch the competition in the first place, adding: "Who watches this sh*te genuinely?".

The negative wave of reaction didn’t stop there. On Reddit and other platforms, fans described the moment as "super cringe" and "hard to watch", while others urged Terry to "stick to coaching" instead of pursuing a career in the music industry.

  • From captain to content creator

While the reaction was mostly mocking, Terry’s involvement in the Baller League reflects his growing interest in football-based entertainment. The competition features former professionals, influencers, and content creators, mixing sport with live performances and plenty of viral moments. Terry has served as one of the Baller League’s headline figures since its launch, managing the 26ers team and making regular appearances in promotional content. His collaboration with ArrDee was clearly meant to be light-hearted, though it appears many fans took it less kindly.

The former England international retired from playing in 2018 before moving into assistant coaching roles at Aston Villa and Leicester City. He’s also been open about his desire to one day manage Chelsea, describing it as his "final dream" in football.

    Terry’s legacy damaged?

Despite the backlash, Terry remains one of Chelsea’s most decorated figures, having made 717 appearances and captained the club to its first Champions League title in 2012. Yet, his off-pitch persona has often divided opinion, from controversial posts on social media to now, an unexpected rap performance.

Some supporters took the criticism in stride, noting that the clip was likely meant to be fun and part of the Baller League’s entertainment approach. Others, though, saw it as another "PR own goal" for a figure who once embodied the club’s old-school toughness.

The contrast between the former captain who lifted trophies under Jose Mourinho and the man rapping in a tracksuit beside ArrDee was too much for many to process. Although it is worth noting that the reaction the clip sparked on social media served its purpose. Terry will have been well aware that purist fans of the game will have picked up on his performance, and while he may face the brunt of the backlash, the moment draws more eyes to the Baller League.

'Phenomenal' Cristiano Ronaldo tipped to play beyond 42 as former Man Utd team-mate reveals two major goals Portugal superstar wants to achieve before retiring

Cristiano Ronaldo is being tipped to extend his remarkable career beyond the age of 42, with former Manchester United team-mate Danny Simpson making that prediction during an exclusive interview with GOAL. Portuguese GOAT Ronaldo has already passed his 40th birthday and signed a new two-year deal with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, but there are considered to be at least a couple more targets for him to chase down.

Ronaldo at Al-Nassr: Stunning goal numbers

Ronaldo has lost none of his appetite for the game, with stunning individual standards being maintained in the Middle East. He has plundered 105 goals for Al-Nassr through 118 appearances, collecting back-to-back Golden Boots. Tangible success has been in short supply, but the intention is to change that in 2025-26.

Ronaldo has the likes of Sadio Mane and Joao Felix alongside him in Riyadh, with an unbeaten start being made to the Saudi Pro League season – allowing Jorge Jesus’ side to sit two points clear at the summit through five matches. CR7 is determined to make further additions to his glittering medal collection.

He is not done at international level either, with the expectation being that he will grace the next World Cup finals in 2026. CR7 already has 225 caps and 143 goals for Portugal, but retirement with club or country is not something that he is willing to consider any time soon.

Ronaldo has made no secret of the fact that he wants to reach 1,000 career goals in competitive action – with the history books being rewritten along the way – while playing alongside his son Cristiano Jr remains a possibility as the 15-year-old continues to make his own impressive progress in the youth ranks of Al-Nassr and Portugal.

Ronaldo targets: 1,000 goals & play alongside his son

Simpson believes that Ronaldo will want to tick both of those boxes before giving any thought to a hanging up of record-shattering boots. As long as he steers clear of injury, then there is no reason why CR7 cannot continue towards his mid-40s.

When asked if such an achievement is possible, Simpson – speaking courtesy of Fruity Slots, which recommends UKGC-licensed online casinos – told GOAL: “I don’t think you can write him off. As long as he is scoring goals, as long as he doesn’t get any injuries, then it wouldn't surprise me because it’s him. I know he wants 1,000 goals. And I think he wants to play with his son.”

Getty/GOALWhat keeps Ronaldo coming back for more at 40?

Individual targets are helping to keep Ronaldo coming back for more as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has achieved just everything it is possible to in professional football. The emotions that would be conjured up when gracing the same time as Cristiano Jr will mean as much to him as any trophy triumph.

Quizzed on whether those challenges – with the likes of LeBron James having played alongside his son in NBA circles – are what keeps Ronaldo motivated, Simpson added: “Playing with your son, that’s probably one of the biggest targets that you can go for once you have won everything. Sharing a pitch with your son must be some feeling. You look at those targets. He does set targets and you look at those – 1,000 goals and play with his son – does he do those and think ‘right, I’ve done it all now’? I don’t know where you go after that. He’s just a phenomenal person, player. What he’s done for the game, it’s unbelievable.”

The Blaze boss powerplays to end Surrey's unbeaten start

Cassidy McCarthy, Kirstie Gordon douse flames of a previously unstoppable host batting line-up

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay11-Jun-2025The Blaze 169 for 9 (Elwiss 61, Kelly 46) beat Surrey 152 (Wyatt-Hodge 60, Gordon 3-35) by 17 runsPowerplay heroics with bat and ball from The Blaze helped end host Surrey’s unbeaten start to the 2025 Vitality Blast women’s competition.Cassidy McCarthy and Kirstie Gordon doused the flames of the previous unstoppable host batting line-up, reducing them to 1 for 3 in pursuit of 170 to win.Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s blistering 60 from 33 balls, including three sixes and seven fours, briefly raised home hopes but they were bowled out in the last over 17 runs short.Earlier, Georgia Elwiss (61 from 46) and Marie Kelly (46 from 29) shared an opening stand of 92 in 57 balls and despite a collapse in which Tash Farrant and Grace Harris got two wickets apiece, their total of 169 proved more than enough.Ryana MacDonald-Gay’s five wides in the opening over gave The Blaze early impetus on which they were quick to build.Kelly was the first aggressor, clearing the ropes off first Farrant and then Tilly Corteen-Coleman. Elwiss then drove and swept Kalea Moore for three successive fours as the visitors reached 63 for nought at the end of the powerplay.A lofted drive and a streaky edge for four by Kelly kept up the pressure, but with a 50 in sight, poor calling left her stranded at the same end as Elwiss. From there, wickets tumbled. In-form Kathryn Brice lofted Corteen-Coleman to Harris at mid-off, the first time she’d been dismissed in the tournament, and her sister Sarah made only 1 before nicking MacDonald-Gay through to Kira Chathli.A suicidal second run saw the end of Heather Graham and neither Ella Claridge or Michaela Kirk stayed long.Elwiss, who’d surveyed the slide from the other end, reached 50 from 40 balls, but after she lobbed a catch to short third, only a few late blows from Josie Groves got The Blaze to 169.Surrey made the worst possible start losing skipper Bryony Smith for nought, part of a wicket-maiden for McCarthy.Chathli also went without scoring courtesy of a fabulous running catch by Kirk and when in-form Paige Schofield was bowled first ball for nought by Gordon Surrey were 1 for 3.Phoebe Franklin blocked out Gordon’s hat-trick ball, but would have been run out soon afterwards were it not for a wild throw with both batters at the same end. Reprieved, Franklin swept Gordon for six, while Wyatt-Hodge caressed one through the covers as a 50-stand came up in 39 balls. The England opener cleared the ropes at midwicket and again behind square to race to 50 in 27 balls, but Groves bowled Franklin to end the stand at 69.When Wyatt-Hodge’s bold effort was ended by McCarthy’s sharp catch at backward point, hopes rested on big-hitting Harris for a late rescue act.The powerful Australian hit Groves back over her head for six, but perished later in the over trying to repeat the shot and despite some brief fireworks from Macdonald-Gay, Surrey were destined to fall short.
