Amorim prepared to ditch Zirkzee in swap deal for "fantastic" £160k-p/w ace

Amid the striker’s struggles to adapt to life in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim is reportedly willing to ditch Joshua Zirkzee in a sensational swap deal to sign an instant upgrade for Manchester United.

Man Utd transfer news

It certainly seems as though Amorim is ready to make his mark. Becoming the latest in a long list of managers tasked with taking Manchester United back to the top of English football for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season, the former Sporting Club boss is the first that will benefit from a new structure at Old Trafford, which includes sporting director Dan Ashworth.

With that structure, the Red Devils should be far better positioned to get things right in the transfer market rather than signing any Antony repeats when 2025 arrives. The rumours have taken no time to get going since Amorim’s arrival, either, with Harry Kane and Leroy Sane already linked to Old Trafford.

It’s no surprise that Manchester United have been linked with high-quality attacking reinforcements, given how summer signing Zirkzee has struggled. Now, after scoring one goal in 17 appearances, the Dutchman could already be heading for the exit door.

According to reporter Gerardo Fasano, via Area Napoli, Amorim is now willing to ditch Zirkzee in a swap deal to sign Victor Osimhen. In a player-plus-cash deal, Zirkzee would head back to the Serie A and Manchester United would be getting the ultimate answer to their attacking problems.

Frozen out at Napoli after failing to seal a move to either Saudi Arabia or Chelsea, Osimhen was left with no choice but to head out on loan to Galatasaray in the summer but has thrived ever since. Seemingly destined to complete a permanent departure away from Napoli next summer, Manchester United could now complete the deal that Chelsea previously failed to get over the line.

"Fantastic" Osimhen would be ultimate upgrade on Zirkzee

Whilst Zirzee has struggled for goals at Manchester United, Osimhen has been back to his best at Galatasaray with eight goals and four assists in just nine games highlighting just how clinical the Nigerian has been in Turkey. He’s a player who belongs at the very top and Manchester United are a club attempting to reach exactly that. If Amorim wants to solve the Red Devils’ attacking issues then Osimhen is the answer.

The £160,000-a-week star has earned plenty of praise during his time in Turkey, including from Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho, who put his loyalties to one side to say via the Evening Standard: “Of course, he comes in different circumstances but in the end the circumstances don’t matter.

“What matters is Galatasaray got an absolutely fantastic player. I don’t have problems with Victor. In fact, we have a very good relationship.”

What cannot be ignored amid such rumours, however, is how much of a failure Manchester United’s Zirkzee deal could become so quickly. It would not reflect well on Ashworth or INEOS if one of their first signings headed for the exit door just one year on from arriving.

Markram hopes exposure to pressure moments at IPL will come in handy at T20WC

After spending four weeks with Punjab Kings in the UAE, Markram feels conditions are easiest for batting in Abu Dhabi, and most difficult in Sharjah

Firdose Moonda11-Oct-2021South Africa’s batters will experience the best and the worst of run-scoring conditions in the UAE at the T20 World Cup, according to Aiden Markram. After spending the last four weeks with Punjab Kings in the UAE for the IPL, Markram has decided that conditions are easiest for batting in Abu Dhabi, and most difficult in Sharjah, but still tough across the venues.”Each ground was different. That was something I didn’t expect; I thought it would be quite generic. But each ground had its own set of challenges,” Markram said. “The pitches weren’t the easiest to bat on, but as the batter gets in he can still take the game away from the opposition. It’s tougher for newer batters coming in. Sharjah was probably the toughest batting wicket out of the three here, and Abu Dhabi was probably the nicest to bat on.”South Africa open the Super 12 stage of the competition against Australia in Abu Dhabi before moving to Dubai to play West Indies and then to Sharjah and back to Abu Dhabi, for two games against qualifiers, and conclude the pool stage against England in Sharjah. Though South Africa are entering the tournament on the back of three successive T20I series wins, only one of those – against West Indies in June – was against opposition they will face in this event. They have also lost to both Australia and England (twice) in T20I series in the Mark Boucher era and have historically tripped against both those teams in major tournaments. But Markram isn’t dwelling too much on all that. “We’re not bringing too much baggage into this World Cup. Everyone here is pretty free-spirited and not too fazed about being at a World Cup, in a good way. Everyone’s very calm so far,” he said. But there are ghosts around this squad. Eight of them – nine if you include reserve Andile Phehlukwayo – were part of the 2019 50-over World Cup, where South Africa turned in their worst major tournament result and were the first team to be eliminated.Aiden Markram played in the middle order for Punjab Kings in IPL 2021•BCCI”Obviously we’ll try not to make the same mistakes that we did in 2019, but this is a different format and completely different conditions, and we’ve got a completely different side,” Markram said. “We haven’t had too many chats about that World Cup. In 2019, when conditions didn’t suit our plans, we almost didn’t have other plans to fall back on. That’s been addressed, and we’ve got a way of cricket we’d like to play against each team.”But if conditions on the day don’t allow for that we have to be smarter and have another plan to fall back on. Having the skill set to trust in that change of plan has been important. Over the last 12 to 18 months the team have up-skilled themselves. That’s probably the biggest thing we can take from the 2019 World Cup.”Markram is one of the best examples of that. Since the 2019 World Cup, he has shown marked improvement against spin, had his best tour of the subcontinent when South Africa toured Pakistan earlier this year, has established himself in white-ball cricket and earned his first IPL deal, which taught him about batting in a different position in the shortest format. “It was a great experience. I was in a less familiar role and it was nice to be exposed to that at a high standard of cricket, and to learn on the job,” Markram said.

“In T20 cricket, results come down to the last three overs if not the last ball. It was good to be exposed to that [at the IPL], because I’m sure games are going to go to the wire at the World Cup.”Aiden Markram

For South Africa, Markram has batted in the top three in nine out of 13 T20I innings, for Punjab Kings, he was at No. 4 or 5 five times in six innings. He found the main challenge of batting in the middle-order to be finding the balance between building an innings and taking on a finishing role. “Guys who consistently finish games well in terms of high strike rates and the ability to find the boundary having just walked to the crease is something I’ve got a new appreciation for,” Markram said. “Because if you walk in and a team is 30 for 3, and you need to build a partnership to get to something that’s half-defendable. Neither of those roles are easy.”Neither was the pressure of a tournament like the IPL. Punjab Kings finished sixth on the points table, after losing eight matches – three in this half of the competition. They also won three matches in this half and four of their six games were decided in the last over. “All our games were close. We would have liked to get over the line more times than we did,” Markram said, indicating that the experience would come in handy ahead of the T20 World Cup.”In T20 cricket, at a World Cup or domestic or international series, results come down to the last three overs if not the last ball. It was good to be exposed to that, because I’m sure games are going to go to the wire at the World Cup. It’s about dealing with that pressure in the moment when two to three balls could change the whole outcome of the game.”

After Sterling: Rangers should hand a pay rise to £22k-p/w star

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement made a raft of changes to his playing squad at Ibrox during the recent summer transfer window.

The Light Blues boss allowed the likes of Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Todd Cantwell, and Connor Goldson, among others, to move on from the club.

This opened the door for the likes of Nedim Bajrami, Robin Propper, Connor Barron, Jefte, Hamza Igamane, and Vaclav Cerny, among others, to arrive at Ibrox.

There are players who were already part of the squad that Clement has been eager to keep hold of though, including Dujon Sterling – who recently signed a new contract through to the summer of 2028.

Dujon Sterling's time with Rangers

The versatile defender joined the Gers on a free transfer from Premier League side Chelsea in the summer of 2023, under Michael Beale, and has proven himself to be a valuable option for the manager.

Since the start of last season, Sterling has played 48 matches for Rangers in all competitions and racked up over 2,000 minutes of action for the club.

Glasgow Rangers defender Dujon Sterling.

The most impressive part of that is that he has been deployed at left-back, right-back, defensive midfield, central midfield, right midfield, left midfield, and right wing in that time, with no more than nine appearances in any one role.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Rangers currently have a few players who are out of contract at the end of the season and, following Sterling’s new deal earlier this month, Tom Lawrence should be the next player to land a big pay rise and an extension at Ibrox.

Why Tom Lawrence has earned a new deal

The Wales international is currently set to become a free agent next summer and the Gers must now move to pin him down to an extension, as they did with Sterling, due to his fantastic start to the season.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Lawrence managed three goals and three assists in 32 appearances in all competitions, as he struggled to find his best form at the top end of the pitch.

This term, however, the 30-year-old star has upped his game and is starting to show that Clement can rely upon him moving forward, which is why he should be pinned down to a new contract.

As you can see in the table above, Lawrence has produced six goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in six appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Pundit James McFadden recently claimed that the attacking midfielder, who scored in the 4-1 defeat to Lyon in the Europa League last week, is one of the players who is “stepping up” for Rangers at the moment.

Lawrence, who is reportedly on £22k-per-week – less than the likes of Rabbi Matondo and Danilo, should now be the next player to earn fresh terms and a pay rise to ensure that they do not lose the impressive dynamo for nothing when his contract is due to expire next year.

That would prevent him from being able to sign a pre-contract with another club from January onwards and make sure that Clement can still rely upon the experienced star’s talents in the years to come.

'It is not the only club' – Liverpool boss Arne Slot calls out three Premier League rivals' spending in response to Erling Haaland's new ten-year contract

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has reacted to Manchester City tying Erling Haaland down to a ten-year deal by taking shots at three Premier League rivals.

After months of speculation regarding Haaland's future at Manchester City, the eight-time English champions have tied the Norwegian down to a ten-year extension at the Etihad Stadium with wages reported to be close to £500,000 per week. Slot was asked for his thoughts on this spending at a press conference.

AdvertisementWHAT SLOT SAID

Slot said: "We know how good we have to be every single day to compete in this league. It is not only the club [City] you are referring to. Chelsea have also spent £1.2 billion and United have spent an incredible amount.

"Every team spends a lot of money over here, that's why it's such an interesting league to be part of. Some seasons this club [Liverpool] spends a bit more, the other season other clubs spend a bit more.

"That's what makes this league so intense and so difficult to win. But that's also the reason why we all want to be here, because you want to compete against the best, with the best. We are very happy with the team we have at the moment. We are still able to compete with all these teams that are spending an incredible amount of money."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As Slot claimed, Chelsea, United and City are indeed the top three biggest spenders in the Premier League since Pep Guardiola switched to the Etihad in 2016. Chelsea have spent £2.04bn while both Manchester clubs have spent arond £1.5bn. Meanwhile, Liverpool have the smallest spend of the traditional top six with £940m.

Despite Liverpool's lack of spending in the summer, Slot has led the Reds to an early lead of the Premier League title race with City all but down for the count. Slot's side has seen a small blip over the last few weeks and as such, the Dutchman will be keen on improvement when they take on Brentford on Saturday, January 18.

Rain forces washout after William Porterfield and Andy Balbirnie score fifties

Only 40.2 overs were possible on a stop-start day in Malahide

Firdose Moonda11-Jul-2021An 87-run second-wicket stand between William Porterfield and Andy Balbirnie anchored Ireland and put them in a solid position before persistent rain washed out the first ODI in Malahide.Rain delayed the start of the match by 45 minutes, and there was another 75-minute pause after the 35th over of Ireland’s innings. The match was reduced to 43 overs a side at that point, but there were only a further 32 balls played, as rain returned and continued past the 5.30pm cut-off for a 20-overs DLS-adjusted chase.Under heavy cloud, Temba Bavuma opted to bowl first in the hope that conditions would aid his attack in running through their hosts but despite significant seam movement and some turn, wickets were hard to come by. Ireland had plenty in hand but their scoring rate remained sedate until they returned following the first rain break. They scored 50 runs in 32 balls thereafter before rain arrived once again.Porterfied, who was an injury doubt after hurting a finger in the lead-up to the match, scored his first fifty since May 2019 while Balbirnie brought up his second half-century in three innings. The pair were steady against a three-seam, two-spin South African outfit, who were economical without being overly aggressive.South Africa’s new-ball pair, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, asked questions of the Ireland openers, beat them several times and induced edges in the first 10 overs. They would have been disappointed not to have any wickets to show for that as Ireland worked their way to 28 without loss.Ireland’s first boundary came off Porterfield’s outside edge, when he was squared up by a short-of-a-length Rabada delivery and the chance eluded Aiden Markram at second slip. His second boundary was more convincing. Porterfield flicked an attempted Rabada yorker through square leg. Paul Stirling took a little longer to settle in after an outside-edge off Rabada and an inside-edge off Ngidi. His first confident stroke came off the 20th ball he faced, when he pulled Ngidi over short midwicket.Andile Phehlukwayo, who did not feature in any of the T20s in the Caribbean, was introduced in the 11th over and was the only South African to have success until the 31st over. He had Stirling caught at extra-cover, top-edging a pull to end an innings that never really got going.Kagiso Rabada picked up a pair of wickets in the brief period of play between rain interruptions•Getty ImagesKeshav Maharaj was brought into the attack before Tabraiz Shamsi and Porterfield appeared to have identified him as the bowler to target. He reverse-swept Maharaj’s second ball for four and tried to smash the final ball of the over down the ground but sliced it short of Rabada at short third. Balbirnie brought up Ireland’s fifty with a drive through the covers but could have been dismissed five overs later. He was on 15 when he tried to cut a Maharaj delivery that was not short or wide enough and top-edged to Markram at slip. Markram tried to take the chest-high catch reverse-cupped and the ball spilled out of his hands.Shamsi was brought on in the 21st over and started with a full toss that Porterfield swatted through mid-wicket. He went on to bring fifty with a heave over backward square leg off the 69th ball he faced and with almost half the innings left to bat, may have been eyeing a 12th century but fell 37 short. Shamsi was convinced Porterfield gloved a reverse-sweep that ballooned up behind the wicket-keeper and was caught by Markram, running from slip, and South Africa reviewed. Replays confirmed contact between the ball and the glove.South Africa hoped they had another when Balbirnie, on 48, attempted a sweep off Maharaj that cannoned off the pad to him in the chin. Maharaj convinced Bavuma to review. Replays showed the ball had brushed the top edge before the ball hit the pad. Balbirnie went on to bring up his second fifty in three ODI innings when he turned Ngidi round the corner for two.At the end of that over, the rain returned and reduced the match to 43 overs a side. Ireland had eight overs left to bat and their intention to accelerate was clear. Balbirnie drilled Shamsi through the covers and steered a Phehlukwayo slower ball through third man before chipping Rabada to midwicket, while Harry Tector hit the first six of the innings when he dispatched Rabada over deep midwicket but was caught behind two balls later.Pinch-hitter Mark Adair cleared the rope twice more, first with a cheeky bit of improvisation when he opened the face of the bat to ramp Ngidi over point and then sent a Rabada full toss out of the ground. The drizzle returned after 25 minutes with Ireland still due to face 16 balls, and that, eventually, was that.
