'That flame no longer burns so brightly' – AB de Villiers retires from all cricket

AB de Villiers has announced his decision to retire from all cricket. This will end his association with all franchise T20 leagues, including Royal Challengers Bangalore, with whom he continued to play in the IPL following his international retirement in 2018.”It has been an incredible journey, but I have decided to retire from all cricket,” de Villiers announced on Twitter. “Ever since the back yard matches with my older brothers, I have played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm. Now, at the age of 37, that flame no longer burns so brightly.”Related

de Villiers last played for Royal Challengers in the 2021 IPL, where he scored 313 runs in 15 matches. While he continued to play in T20 leagues around the world – at the BBL, the PSL, the Vitality Blast, the BPL and the MSL back home – following his international retirement, he played the most in the IPL. Since beginning his association with the franchise in 2011, de Villiers played 157 matches for them and scored 4522 runs at a strike rate of 158.33. He is also the franchise’s second-highest run-scorer of all time, behind Virat Kohli.”I have had a long and fruitful time playing for RCB,” he said in a statement. “Eleven years have just whizzed by and leaving the boys is extremely bittersweet. Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time, but after a lot of contemplation, I’ve decided to hang up my boots and spend quality time with my family.AB on the RCB association: “Eleven years have just whizzed by and leaving the boys is extremely bittersweet”•BCCI

“I would like to thank the RCB management, my friend Virat Kohli, teammates, coaches, support staff, fans, and the entire RCB family for showing faith and supporting me all through these years. It has been a memorable journey with RCB. Have so many memories on the personal front to cherish for the lifetime. RCB will always be very close to me and my family and will continue to support this amazing team. I am a RCBian forever.”The last three-and-a-half years of de Villiers’ career was punctuated with questions over whether he would return for South Africa’s white-ball teams, specifically for World Cups. At the 2019 World Cup, de Villiers contacted then white-ball captain Faf du Plessis shortly before South Africa were due to announce their squad, but the selectors turned down his request for a recall. At the recently-completed Social Justice and Nation-Building Hearings, former convenor of selectors Linda Zondi confirmed that the administrators thought recalling de Villiers would be unfair to players who were already in the system.AB de Villiers scored 4522 runs for RCB, making him the team’s second-highest scorer after Virat Kohli•BCCI

Though lauded as South Africa’s most creative batter, de Villiers also has the shadow of revelations hanging over him. In testimony from former selector Hussein Manack at the SJN hearings, de Villiers was accused of pressuring Manack not to pick Khaya Zondo for an ODI in India, preferring Dean Elgar instead. De Villiers never denied the allegation but said any inputs he made were always in the “best interests” of the team. He has submitted a responding affidavit to the SJN but it has not been made public.de Villiers was also in talks with current head coach Mark Boucher about returning for the T20 World Cup, initially scheduled for 2020, but in May, it was made clear his international retirement would remain final.Speculation about de Villiers’ international future began in late 2015, after South Africa lost their first series on the road in nine years, in India. They returned home to play against England and de Villiers was asked to keep wicket in the opening Test, in addition to his role in the middle order. In that match, the first reports that de Villiers was considering early retirement began when Afrikaans newspaper suggested he was unhappy with the system. de Villiers played down the talk but said he was considering maybe “not to play all kinds of cricket”.He was then named stand-in captain after Hashim Amla stepped down from the role after the second Test. He was confirmed in the role in February 2016, but an elbow injury prevented him from taking up the position. He ruled himself out of Tests for most of 2017 and returned in December for a ten-Test summer, in which South Africa beat India Australia at home. He did not play international cricket again.

Arsenal trio spotted training ahead of PSG clash but £150k-p/w ace missing

Arsenal have been handed a boost on the injury front as a trio of stars have been spotted in training ahead of their clash with Paris Saint Germain, it has emerged.

Arsenal in search of Champions League win

Currently unbeaten in the Premier League this season, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta remain on the hunt for their first Champions League win of the season, having drawn 0-0 with Atalanta 10 days ago. They now welcome French champions PSG to north London, with the Parisians also having enjoyed an unbeaten start to their domestic season and currently top of Ligue 1, while they edged past Girona in their opening Champions League clash.

Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta admitted his squad were looking forward to the test: “These are the kind of games that we want to have. Against a big opponent. We’re just ready for it.

“We missed it for a number of years. Last year it was the first one where we had the opportunity to do it. The group stage is a bit different this season. The opposition we’re facing is probably at the highest level in European football. Honestly it’s a great opportunity to see how we deal with that, how prepared we are and how we can deal with different contexts.”

Now, the Gunners have been handed an injury boost ahead of the clash.

Trio spotted in training but Ben White could miss out

That comes as a trio of their first team stars have been spotted back in training ahead of the clash with PSG. Riccardo Calafiori, who suffered an injury scare against Leicester City, was present as part of the final training session before the clash, with the Italian seemingly recovered from his issue.

Additionally, summer signing Mikel Merino was also among those who took to the grass, with the Spaniard having suffered a shoulder injury in his first training session with the club and yet to make his debut since joining from Real Sociedad. Though unlikely to do so against PSG, his return will be a welcome boost given the long term absence of captain Martin Odegaard.

There was also mixed news at fullback, with Takehiro Tomiyasu back in training alongside his new teammates, with the Japanese defender having been suffering with a knee injury.

However, there was no sighting of fellow defender Ben White, who was a substitute against Manchester City but has since missed games against Bolton and Leicester City through a reported groin injury.

Speaking ahead of the session, Arteta explained that White and Calafiori “are the two players that are in contention and we have to review today,” though White’s absence may suggest that the £150,000 a week defender has failed to prove himself fit for tomorrow night’s clash.

However, Tomiyasu’s return will come as a major boost for the Arsenal boss, with Arteta having previously dubbed him a unique option in the squad.

“I always said that I’m really confident that the moment Tomi has consistency, he’s going to be a tremendous asset for us. He already is”, he explained. “He can play in any position in the backline, any formation in the backline, we don’t have another player like him.”

Though his return will likely come too late to feature against PSG, his impending return to the squad will be another massive boost for the Gunners.

Arsenal send scouts to watch £5m teen forward who could be Martinelli 2.0

Arsenal have scouts watching a winger who could be the next Gabriel Martinelli, reports suggest, with the Gunners in a fight for his signature as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad.

Gabriel Martinelli rediscovers Arsenal form

Prior to the clash with Manchester City, Gabriel Martinelli had not scored or assisted a goal in the Premier League since March for Arsenal. His last goal involvement had come in a 6-0 thrashing of Sheffield United, but the introduction of Riccardo Calafiori appears to have helped him rediscover some form.

First, he was given the assist for the five yard pass that allowed Calafiori to equalise against Manchester City, then in far more meaningful fashion he sprung into life against Leicester City.

Moments after missing a glorious chance, the Brazilian forward grabbed the opening goal before teeing up Leandro Trossard on the stroke of half time to put Arsenal two goals to the good, though they needed a stoppage time rescue act to ensure all three points stayed in north London.

Signed for just £6m in 2019 from then-Brazilian third tier side Ituano, he has turned into one of the leading wingers in the Premier League during his time in north London, making over 175 appearances for the Gunners and only turning 23-years-old in June. A clear success story for Arsenal’s scouting department, they may now have found another.

Arsenal chase teenage winger

That comes as reports suggest Arsenal have joined the race to sign Ivory Coast wonderkid Bazoumana Touré, who is currently impressing in the Swedish top flight for Hammarby. Still just 18-years-old, the left-winger has grabbed six goals and three assists so far in 2024,

Scouting account Rising Talents on X dubbed him “very fast”, as well as being a “very strong winger in 1vs1 situations”, both of which are also part of Martinelli’s skillset in north London.

As per the Mirror, “Arsenal are amongst a long list of clubs keeping tabs” on the teenager, who is valued at around £5m, and the Gunners had scouts at his most recent outing against Hacken, where he grabbed an assist.

Hammarby are resigned to losing him in the near future, with sporting director Mikael Hjelmberg explaining: “There are a lot of clubs coming to the match against Hacken. We need to plan for a future without him. Then if it happens this winter, next summer or even further than that – I don’t think so, we’ll see. But the longer we get to keep him the better.”

Though a more established name than Martinelli was when Arsenal swooped to sign him, Touré could offer the Gunners the chance to pick up another future superstar for peanuts.

Manchester United have continued to struggle since Amorim’s appointment as Erik ten Hag’s successor and are currently on a run of four straight defeats in all competitions. The Red Devils have also failed to score in three of those matches amid a difficult spell for the new coach.

The Daily Star has now reported that Amorim has demanded Manchester United sanction the signing of his former striker Gyokeres from Sporting this winter with the Red Devils willing to offload both Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee. The Liga NOS side are expected to demand Gyokeres’ release clause worth £80 million ($99.7m) if any club approaches them in January regarding the striker.

DID YOU KNOW?

However, Amorim has already claimed that Manchester United have no ‘possibility’ of making any major signings this January unless they can free up some funds by selling stars. The Red Devils have already invested heavily with a major spending spree in the summer of 2024 that saw them sign Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui. The Portuguese coach has also previously claimed he would not try to sign any of his former Sporting players in January.

Amorim looks unlikely to be able to sign Gyokeres in the current transfer window, although the club are believed to be willing to sanction the departures of Rashford and Zirkzee. In the meantime Amorim's next game is another testing fixture as his United side go up against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

20 y/o Aston Villa starlet wows media in his homeland on international duty

Aston Villa will hope to continue their impressive start to the season with a home fixture against struggling Everton when domestic football returns next weekend, but first they must hope for their players to return from international fixtures injury-free and in good form.

Aston Villa players away on international duty

The Villans – like most Premier League sides – sit with bated breath hoping for an injury free international break, with a whole host of their players jetting off around the globe this week.

Ezri Konsa has one again been included in England's squad and will hope to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right hand side of Lee Carsley's defence for their second fixture against Finland at Wembley on Tuesday.

John McGinn was hit with some last minute heartbreak at the hands of a 3-2 defeat to Poland last week, and is in action once more against Portugal in Lisbon this Sunday evening.

The players Unai Emery will likely be keeping the closest eye on fitness wise however are his South Americans, with Emi Martinez and Jhon Duran both facing long trips back to the Midlands and perhaps a race against time to be absolutely 100 per cent for the visit of the Toffees. One thing is for sure though, both players will be returning full of confidence.

While Martinez had a relatively easy evening in Argentina's 3-0 win against Chile, facing just one shot on target, young striker Duran had a much more exciting evening for Colombia, as he grabbed an assist off the bench for his side's only goal, setting up Liverpool's Luis Diaz for a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw in Peru.

James Rodriguez for Colombia.

The 20 year-old Villa starlet, who has started the season on fire with two goals in just 82 minutes of Premier League action after a summer filled with exit links and controversy, once again showed his merit as a 'super sub', mustering up a busy performance despite playing just 18 minutes.

As well as his assist, Duran was an absolute nuisance in the air, winning three of his four aerial duels and racking up two shots of his own, one of which tested goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

The media in Colombia were impressed, via Aston Villa News, with El Heraldo saying he took his chance to impress, was "dangerous" throughout his time on the pitch and dominant in the air. El Tiempo echoed that sentiment, saying his presence and ability in the air made a huge difference.

It seems unlikely that Villa's rising star is going to budge Ollie Watkins out of his starting role any time soon, but the fact Emery now has two excellent options – both offering different styles – can only be a huge positive as Villa get set to embark into four top level competitions in the coming weeks.

James Bracey, Ollie Robinson in line for Test debuts as England name 15-man squad

James Bracey, the Gloucestershire wicketkeeper-batter, and Ollie Robinson, the Sussex seamer, are in line for Test debuts against New Zealand next month, after being named in England’s 15-man squad for the two-match series, starting at Lord’s on June 2.Both players have been rewarded for their patience in travelling as reserves during England’s bio-secures campaigns during the Covid pandemic, as well as for their impressive starts to the county season. Bracey has scored 478 runs at 53.11 to help lift Gloucestershire to the top of the County Championship Group 2 standings, while Robinson has taken 29 wickets at 14.72 for Sussex, including a career-best haul of 9 for 78 against Glamorgan. There is also a recall for Somerset’s seam-bowling allrounder Craig Overton, who played the most recent of his four Tests against Australia in the 2019 Ashes. He too has been in fine form this summer with 32 wickets at 13.96, including five-fors in each of his last three outings.Related

The squad is the first to have been chosen by the ECB’s new selection panel, led by the head coach Chris Silverwood, following the decision to part company with the former national selector Ed Smith last month.”James Bracey and Ollie Robinson deserve their call ups to the Test squad,” Silverwood said. “They have been consistent performers in the County Championship this season and over the past 18 months, have excelled for the Lions on the field and in the various camps they have been involved in.”Having spent all winter and last summer in the company of our established Test players, they have immersed themselves in preparing and understanding what it takes to play at this level. The environment and culture will be something they are used to, and should they be in a position to make their Test debuts, they will be ready to showcase their skills.”They are both resilient characters and have demonstrated to me, the captain and coaches that they have the desire, temperament and the ability to continually improve to give themselves every chance of succeeding on the international stage.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Bracey’s and Robinson’s opportunities come, in part, due to the decision to rest England’s contingent of IPL players, who have recently completed their quarantine periods following the postponement of the tournament earlier this month.Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes will link up with their counties after a period of down time, ahead of the white-ball series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as the five-match Test series against India, while both Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were out of the reckoning due to their respective injuries.Archer may have to undergo surgery on his right elbow after failing to complete his first-class comeback for Sussex against Kent last week, but Stokes is progressing well from his fractured left index finger that he sustained while diving for a catch during the IPL, and is set to return to action next month for Durham in the Vitality Blast – his first game at county level since 2018.”Jofra Archer is to see a consultant this week to understand the severity of his right elbow injury,” Silverwood said. “He struggled in Sussex’s Championship fixture last week and he wasn’t able to bowl on the final two days of the match. We need to get this resolved once and for all to give him the best chance of being fully fit as we build up to an intense winter, which will include a T20 World Cup and the Ashes. We need him firing in all formats of the game.”Ben Stokes is making excellent progress following his fractured left index finger sustained last month in the Indian Premier League,” he added. “If he continues to improve without any impact on his rehabilitation, we could see him return next month for Durham in the Vitality Blast competition. We will assess him again towards the end of this month.James Bracey has been in impressive form for Gloucestershire this summer•Getty Images

“As for the players who have just come out of quarantine after the cancelled IPL, we felt it necessary for them to have an extended break. We need them to recharge mentally. We will then take a view when they return to cricket. It will mean that they will get some competitive matches with their respective counties either in the LV= Insurance County Championship or the Vitality Blast next month. We will work closely with each individual on when they are likely to play again.”The squad is due to convene in London on Friday, May 28, five days ahead of the Lord’s Test, starting June 2. The second Test, at Edgbaston, gets underway on June 10.”This is the start of our international summer and an exceptionally long winter, so we are mindful that we need the players ready both physically and mentally,” Silverwood said. “Understanding players’ needs are paramount in our planning and something that will continually develop across the year leading into the World Cup and Ashes campaigns.”The summer of Test cricket will be fascinating,” he added. “Playing the top two teams in the world, in New Zealand and India, is perfect preparation for us as we continue to improve and progress towards an Ashes series in Australia at the back end of the year.”With several players not available through injury or being rested for the New Zealand series, it is an opportunity for us to reward those who have been on the fringes of England squads over the past 12 months.”England squad: Joe Root (capt), James Anderson, James Bracey, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Ben Foakes, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Dom Sibley, Olly Stone, Mark Wood
