Celtic: Fans react sarcastically to club’s birthday tweet for Vakoun Issouf Bayo

Celtic’s official Twitter channel @CelticFC marked the birthday of striker Vakoun Issouf Bayo with a post to highlight the occasion, with the Ivorian turning 23 on Friday.

The forward came to the club from Dunajska Streda a year ago this week but has struggled to make an impact at Parkhead, with only 13 appearances for the Hoops’ first team in that time and a solitary goal to his name. Indeed, Bayo played just a single minute in all competitions for the Scottish champions last season.

He has at least been given a few more opportunities this term, with 12 appearances so far in the current campaign, although all but two of those have been from the substitutes’ bench and his only goal came in a Betfred Cup win over Partick Thistle in September (as per TransferMarkt). Bayo had initially claimed two goals in a Premiership win against Hearts earlier this season, only for the SPFL to determine that both were own goals from the Jam Tarts (as per The Scotsman).

While the Ivorian striker has struggled for game-time at Celtic, his compatriot Ismaila Soro could end up at Parkhead according to the Daily Record, who reported that his current club Bnei Yehuda would understand if he wanted to move to Glasgow. Upon seeing the birthday post for Bayo, these Celtic fans on Twitter delivered some withering responses:

Do you think Bayo has been unfairly maligned by some at Celtic or should the club get rid of him if he isn’t going to play regularly? Join in the discussion by commenting below!

Tottenham fans hail Giovani Lo Celso after his substitute impact in FA Cup stalemate

Tottenham Hotspur are in the hat for the FA Cup fourth round, but they’ll have to do battle once again in order to rubber-stamp their place in the competition.

Championship outfit Middlesbrough held Jose Mourinho’s side at the Riverside Stadium with the top-flight side needing to come from behind to salvage a draw.

Boro striker Ashley Fletcher opened the scoring early in the second half with a slotted finish past Paulo Gazzaniga with Lucas Moura becoming Spurs’ saviour after he headed home just after the hour mark.

His finish came just five minutes after attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso was introduced, which was no coincidence in the visitors changing their fortunes around according to some supporters.

Even the manager himself hailed the Argentian’s performance, Mourinho added: “The boys reacted. Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela helped us a lot. If one team has to win, it has to be us. We played well very in the last 20 minutes.”

Here’s what the travelling fans had to say…

A couple of supporters labelled the 23-year-old as their Man of the Match despite coming off the bench halfway through the second half while others used a range of superlatives to describe his showing, including ‘gifted,’ ‘gem’ and ‘game-changer.’

It has led to many calls for Mourinho to start the impactful Lo Celso after playing just 15 times this season, only four of which being starts, per Transfermarkt.

Lo Celso is only on loan in north London and despite a lack of game time so far this campaign, plenty would love to see him remain at the club permanently.

According to Marca, Spurs can sign him for £27m this month or wait until the summer when that will increase to £34m.

The Real Betis man has even been compared to Christian Eriksen, who is expected to depart the club at some point in 2020 with many believing the Argentinian is far better than the long-serving playmaker.

They certainly believe he can be the man to replace him, whether that is this month or in the summer remains to be seen.

Harry Kane’s recent injury may scupper plans to sign the 22-cap international depending on Daniel Levy’s willingness to open the chequebook this month.

The England striker is set to be out until March with a hamstring tear which would be a devastating blow to Mourinho given that Kane is their only senior centre-forward.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

Meanwhile, these Spurs fans have been discussing the possible arrival of this £37.8m-rated striker this month…

Liverpool laud Joe Hardy on his debut

Joe Hardy’s arrival at Liverpool appeared to come out on nowhere.

The 21-year-old has never played a senior game of football in his life, and yet the Reds decided to snap him up from Brentford’s B team. They did not even announce his signing, such was the lack of fanfare around his arrival at the Merseyside club.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

However, he has already hit the ground running with the U23s. He made his debut against Southampton on Monday night and scored twice in a 5-0 victory for the Reds – which was made even more impressive by the fact that he was only on the pitch until the 64th minute.

Unsurprisingly, many fans were delighted with his display.

It was a fantastic way to start his career with the European champions, and performances like this will do his reputation no harm.

A lot of fans got carried away, and compared him to some of the biggest names in the game.

Tongue in cheek, of course. Such is the Twittersphere!

One fan even claimed that he will be picking up the biggest individual trophies in the business.

We’ll believe that when we see it.

Others, meanwhile, expect Klopp to work his magic and turn him into a decent player.

There are a number of players in the Liverpool first-team squad that have benefitted from the 52-year-old’s guidance, so there is no reason why Hardy can’t improve.

And there are some who already think that he could be of use to the former Borussia Dortmund boss.

With Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino to compete with, that seems incredibly unlikely.

Reds supporters will be hoping they hear a lot more about him at least.

In other news, Neil Warnock has huge praise for this Liverpool man.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder opens up on Billy Sharp

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has provided a fresh update on the future of Billy Sharp, words that suggest the striker will be remaining at Bramall Lane this month.

What’s the word?

The Blades have only concluded the free transfer of Jack Rodwell in the current window but there was a positive update on the future of John Lundstram on Thursday. The club hopes to trigger their ability to extend the midfielder’s contract into a following year with his initial deal ending in the summer.

However, one man’s future who has been rather more up in the air over the last month is Sharp.

The striker has been linked with a return to Leeds while Sunderland have also been touted with making an unlikely swoop.

Wilder stated earlier this month that he’d make the striker decide his own future, but the Blades boss has confirmed there is now fresh interest in his services.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of a clash with Arsenal, he noted:

“I had another chat with Billy this week and told him about another club that is interested but my stance hasn’t changed. His message to me is that he wants to stay. He’s been upfront with me and I’ve been 100% up front with him.”

Faith in sharp has dwindled

Given Sharp has started just a solitary game all season, it’s perhaps rather surprising that he doesn’t have ambitions of playing regular first-team football.

However, his desire to fight for his place in the side is admirable and it’s exactly the kind of attitude that Wilder has instilled in his players at Bramall Lane.

Sharp played a pivotal part in helping Sheffield United to promotion last term, scoring 23 goals as the Blades finished second in the Championship.

However, a lack of faith was shown in their forward line heading into the current season as Wilder splashed £20m on Oliver McBurnie and also decided to bring in Lys Mousset.

Both players have been imperative in keeping the 33-year-old out of the side. The Frenchman went on a run earlier in the season where he scored five goals in nine matches. Yet, the former Bournemouth man has since failed to find the back of the net in his last eight outings for the Blades.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

As for McBurnie, he’s scored just three times in his last ten games. With that in mind, it would be foolish to rule out Sharp as an option.

Consistent goal scorers are something Wilder has lacked this season, but Sharp proved he knew where the net was last term. Perhaps they ought to consider using him more often.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United are in the market for a player who SILENCED Lionel Messi back in 2018…

Crystal Palace: The Athletic give their verdict on Michy Batshuayi

The Athletic’s Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam has given his verdict on the chances of Michy Batshuayi returning to Selhurst Park this month, after we put the question to him in a Q&A session on Friday afternoon.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the south Londoners were believed to be closing in on a loan deal to sign the 29-cap Belgium international according to The Sun, although Chelsea were waiting until they sign a striker of their own until giving the green light.

As of now, that is something that Frank Lampard’s side have been unable to do, so Batshuayi remains at Stamford Bridge.

The former Marseille striker spent the second half of last season on loan at Selhurst Park, where he netted five goals in nine Premier League starts before heading back to Chelsea, where he has made no starts in either the Premier League or the Champions League this term.

Lampard has afforded his No.23 just 14 substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, while handing him four outings from the bench in the Champions League – Batshuayi’s only starts have come in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, where he has made one and two respectively.

What did Woosnam say?

Here’s what we asked The Athletic journalist: “Could you tell me the percentage chances of Michy Batshuayi returning to Selhurst Park this month?”

To which Woosnam replied: “It’s impossible to give an accurate percentage at the moment because things will always change in football. It all depends on what happens elsewhere and what Palace’s priorities are at the end of the window. It’s one to keep an eye on but I wouldn’t consider it something that has a very high chance.”

While that response doesn’t offer huge encouragement to those who want to see the 26-year-old back in red and blue, it does still leave a tiny glimmer of hope.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

Woosnam’s seven-word response of “it’s one to keep an eye on” suggests that there could still be some action in this specific transfer saga, although with Chelsea still yet to sign a striker of their own, who knows what will happen.

It would be a massively helpful signing for Roy Hodgson, as his side are currently the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers with only 22 goals to their name in 24 outings this term – only Watford have scored less.

In other news, this transfer target who gets fouled just as much as Wilfried Zaha could be ideal for Crystal Palace…

Leeds journalist gives insight into how Bielsa may have felt vs Millwall

Leeds United looked as if they were falling apart again at half time against Millwall on Tuesday.

Indeed, the Whites were 2-0 down at the break, and Elland Road was worried as it looked like their grip on the top two was going to loosen even further.

However, United turned things around by winning 3-2, and as with every dramatic comeback, we have to wonder what the manager said at the break to turn things around.

Interestingly, Phil Hay believes that Bielsa would have been quite happy with what he saw in the first half.

What’s been said then?

The journalist was hosting a post-match Q&A session on The Athletic, and as you can imagine some fans were wondering what was going through the manager’s mind at halftime.

“I’ll be interested to find out. I suspect he was relatively happy with the first half – he looks for dominance and pressure and chances. It was all there but with errors too. It all came good after the break and Millwall couldn’t cope.”

That’s why he’s the boss

This is why Bielsa is such a great manager.

Other head coaches may have gone into the changing room and screamed at their side after such a poor first-half, but the Argentine is good at looking beyond the scoreline.

Yes, Leeds were 2-0 down, but they had plenty of good chances and applied pressure. However, it was their finishing that let them down. In total, the Yorkshire side had an incredible 28 shots but only 11 of them were on target.

In the end, that pressure paid off as the Whites completely turned the game on its head and came away with the three points. Perhaps it was Bielsa’s inspirational words that inspired such a result.

Manchester United fans react to Danny Ings link

Manchester United are clearly looking for a striker.

This January transfer window, they have been linked with a whole host of forwards, including Edinson Cavani and Joshua King. Now, it seems that they have already made an enquiry for Southampton’s Danny Ings, according to The Telegraph. The former Liverpool man has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this term – only two players have managed more.

As you can imagine, Red Devils fans have been reacting in their droves to this news.

It seems that United supporters are starting to get a little bit dispirited with the amount of players they are being linked with.

It really does seem that the Old Trafford outfit have been linked with pretty much every striker going. They only have a few hours to get a deal done.

Others fans have been calling their club “Enquiry FC”.

Again, the sheer volume of reports on United this month means that the word enquiry has cropped up quite a bit.

In regards to the player himself, some supporters would have liked to see him move to Manchester.

With 14 goals for a side that has managed just 31 between the whole squad, Danny Ings is a striker who knows where the back of the net is. That is worth its weight in gold.

Harry Kane gives an eight-word verdict that Spurs fans will surely agree with

Tottenham Hotspur edged one step closer to landing silverware this season as they advanced into the next round of the FA Cup on Wednesday evening.Jose Mourinho’s men defeated Southampton 3-2 thanks to a late penalty from makeshift centre-forward Heung-min Son, whose role has quickly increased in the absence of injured top goalscorer Harry Kane.Following the match, the sidelined Spurs skipper tweeted his verdict on the result, he said:

The north Londoners were embroiled in a topsy-turvy encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – they first took the lead through an own-goal as Tanguy Ndombele’s effort rebounded in off visiting centre-back Jack Stephens before Shane Long squared things up by tapping home a deflected effort.

Spurs then fell behind for the first time in the match as Danny Ings curled a strike past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but the home side equalised just six minutes later through Lucas Moura prior to Son’s dramatic late winner from the spot.

Kane’s verdict on how stressful the match was to watch will probably ring true in the eyes of many supporters who were also watching from the stands.

Their season so far under Mourinho has been a rollercoaster full of emotions – from drawing to basement boys Norwich City to then tasting defeat at St Mary’s before coming out on top against the reigning champions Manchester City, and now advancing into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

Given that the 17-goal Kane is used to playing in these types of matches, rather than eagerly watching on, he has now felt what every supporter most likely goes through when seeing him in action week in, week out.

Leeds fans react as Bielsa confirms Bamford and Casilla will be starting

Leeds United’s form has been nothing short of dire lately.

Indeed, the Whites have won just once since the turn of the year, and even before 2020 rolled around they were faltering, as they’ve now won just two of their last 11 games.

It has to be said that Patrick Bamford and Kiko Casilla’s poor showings are two of the main reasons for Leeds’ ongoing demise.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Bamford has scored just twice in his last nine appearances, and Casilla has made errors leading to goals in each of his last three games, allowing a deflected corner to beat him directly against Wigan, being beaten far too easily at his near post against Forest, and pretty much assisting Said Benrahma against Brentford on Tuesday.

With Leeds playing so poorly as of late you’d think that Marcelo Bielsa would be looking at changing things up, particularly when it comes to Casilla and Bamford.

However, ahead of United’s game against Bristol City, the Argentine confirmed that both of the aforementioned players would be starting.

Understandably, this sparked a negative reaction from the fanbase.

While many were unhappy with this news, others pointed out the fact that it’s Bielsa’s stubbornness that has caused this issue.

The Argentine has been called stubborn a number of times before, and his refusal to drop either Casilla or Bamford at the moment certainly plays into that narrative.

In other news, Leeds would have benefitted massively if the FA did one thing.

Sunderland monitoring Stan Asomugha

Sunderland are still monitoring the situation of Stan Asomugha who has now been named as a trialist in the U23 side on two occasions.

What’s the word?

The 19-year-old is still on the books of West Brom, a side he’s netted twice in nine games for in Premier League 2 this campaign.

A player with promise, the youngster could now make the move to the Academy of Light in order to further his development.

Asomugha featured against West Ham last week in what was his debut for the Mackems. He then played in the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle too.

However, while two other trialists were dismissed with decisions to be made on their futures, the Albion winger is sticking around and could feature in a further clash on Tuesday evening.

The Sunderland Echo suggest the Black Cats are keen on having an extended look at the player.

Elliot Dickman said: “Tyler [Frost] has played two games now, but Stan’s situation is slightly different and he could be involved on Tuesday night. He’s going to stay up a little bit longer.”

Strange move

West Brom have seen numerous prospects leave their clubs throughout the years, whether it be Tyler Roberts or Louie Barry who ended up at Aston Villa after a spell with Barcelona.

However, they arguably moved onto more ambitious clubs and a higher division.

Any move to Sunderland’s academy must be looked at with an element of surprise. The U23s sit rock bottom of Premier League 2 Division 2 with a goal difference of -40, and have only won once since February 2019. It’s a woeful record but the Mackems have recently retained their Category One academy status.

Therefore, taking a player on who has regularly played for a successful youth side like West Brom’s – who reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals in 2018/19 – would be a sign of their intent.

Calling all EFL experts: Can you get full marks on this stadiums quiz?

It would be a small one but given the way the academy has gone this term, any ray of positivity is certainly encouraging.

Looking to bring in young individuals to bolster their ranks is a good start but whether Asomugha has the qualities to sufficiently turn them around on his own remains to be seen. It’s likely it’ll take more than just one addition.

In other Sunderland news, many of their fans think their 6 ft 3 COLOSSUS deserves a new contract…
