Aston Villa fans praise "phenomenal" John Terry performances

It’s fair to say that not every Aston Villa fan was delighted when the club announced the signing of John Terry in the summer.

Despite the former Chelsea mans wealth of top-flight experience, some questioned his mobility and talent as he nears the end of his career.

However, the ex-England skipper has been a revelation in recent games in the Championship, forming a particularly strong partnership with fellow centre-half James Chester.

In fact, so far this season, only surprise contenders Cardiff have conceded fewer goals than Steve Bruce’s side.

What has been truly impressive in recent games is Terry’s ability to lead his team from the back. His communication skills are unrivalled and this is evident in the unity of Villa’s defensive unit.

Following another star performance from Terry during Wednesday’s victory over Preston, Villa fans were quick to take to Twitter and express their adulation for a man who is proving many doubters wrong so far this season…

Tottenham fans unimpressed with images of new stadium

All things considered, Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium is going to be pretty impressive.

It will stand up to any of the big grounds in English football, and that is what Spurs need as they bid to become one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s official Twitter account have been releasing images of the new stadium – which should be ready for the start of next season – throughout the last couple of months.

Monday was no different as images of the premium areas at the new White Hart Lane were released.

It looked incredibly posh, with diners sitting down to a nice meal before the match, whilst televisions were also present for those that decide to miss kickoff or perhaps the entire 90 minutes in order to guzzle a bottle of wine or seven.

To suggest that the Tottenham fans were not impressed would be an understatement, however, with many asking whether they could purchase beer and a pie in that particular area.

The images suggest a very modern football ground, but will it cost Tottenham an atmosphere? Only time will tell. A selection of the best Twitter reaction can be found below:

West Ham fans react as club is linked with Daniel Sturridge move

According to reports in the Daily Mail, West Ham United boss David Moyes is considering making a move for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge during the January transfer window, and Irons fans have been quick to have their say on the rumour. The Daily Mail says that while the east London outfit want to bring in a new centre-forward and could step up their interest in Krasnodar attacker Fyodor Smolov after watching him score on Sunday, they are also keeping tabs on Reds duo Sturridge and Danny Ings. The former has played just 431 minutes of Premier League football for the Merseyside club this term with Roberto Firmino often preferred up top, although he did start the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday.West Ham supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on a potential move for Sturridge, and while one said it “will never happen”, another added “we don’t need a striker”.Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

In Focus: Danny Rose can provide permanent solution to left-back problem at Man United

As reported by The Mirror, Manchester United are ready to make a January transfer window move for Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Rose.

What’s the story?

The left-back position has become something of a problem one for Jose Mourinho this season with nobody really stepping up to make it their own. The likes of Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind have all been used to varying success, while there’s been little sign of Luke Shaw making a first team impact.

It seems it’ll be a key area for Jose Mourinho in the upcoming transfer window with The Mirror reporting he’s ready to make a £40m move for Tottenham defender Danny Rose.

The paper say they could even also offer Luke Shaw as part of the deal.

Does Rose have enough quality to make an impact at Old Trafford?

The right choice?

The England international has had a storied career to this point, with ups and downs, but emerged last season as one of the most exciting full-backs in the league, providing Tottenham with a dynamic attacking presence on the left flank, with the defensive solidity to do the job at the back too.

He could be a real delight in Jose Mourinho’s side if given free reign to play the same role that he has in Mauricio Pochettino’s side. At 27 years of age he is coming into his peak years and has enough of a career ahead of him to become a mainstay at Old Trafford, providing a permanent solution to a problem position.

Ambitious and determined to win trophies, a move to Manchester for the England international could be a match made in heaven.

The key questions Allardyce must answer ahead of Merseyside derby

Everton may have picked up two consecutive wins since announcing Sam Allardyce as their new manager but that short honeymoon period could well come to an abrupt end this weekend when his side travel to Anfield for the latest instalment of the Merseyside derby.

With the two clubs at opposing ends of the Premier League table, Liverpool boasting home advantage and illustrious attacking form, the Reds are inevitably the favourites for Sunday’s 2.15pm kickoff. That doesn’t mean an Everton victory is completely out of the question though; Allardyce just needs to find the right answers to these three crucial questions…

How can Everton stop Liverpool’s attack?

Of course, it’s easier said than done – especially after the confidence gained by destroying Spartak Moscow 7-0 in midweek. Liverpool boast one of the most fearsome attacks in Europe and Mohamed Salah is a frightening entity on his own, topping the Premier League’s scoring charts with twelve goals in 15 appearances – alongside Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane, Liverpool are almost impossible to stop when they hit top gear.

But if there’s one shared flaw amongst their attacking cast, it’s that all of them like to drift inside and none are at their best in wide positions.

Likewise, Liverpool are limited in terms of height in the opposition box, so Everton’s best chance of stopping the Reds’ front-line this weekend surely lays in keeping them as wide as possible and forcing them into a crossing game.

That will depend on setting up with a deep defensive line and the wide midfielders doing more than their fair share of tracking back.

How can Everton stop themselves being pinned back?

While Everton seem almost certain to set up deep on Sunday and create the circumstances for a gritty, rear-guard performance, that does come with its own dangers at Anfield. Liverpool are far more potent on the counter and they’ve struggled to break down well-organised and physical sides at home before, but they still have the quality to punish teams who allow themselves to become trapped in their own defensive third.

That’s perhaps the biggest danger to Everton’s expected game-plan this weekend and Allardyce will have to ensure there’s an outlet in attack that can quickly bring his team up the pitch. Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson just aren’t mobile enough for that task and although Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the most obvious candidate, a lack of experience may well convince Allardyce to turn to Oumar Niasse instead for such a hot-tempered game.

What is Everton’s best chance of scoring?

For all the criticism of Liverpool’s defensive problems this season, they’ve actually conceded the second-fewest home goals of any side in the Premier League – just two in seven games – which begs the question of what Everton’s best chance of scoring at Anfield actually is.

Set pieces inevitably stand out; although Liverpool are yet to concede from one at home in the Premier League this season, they’ve conceded the most of any top six side overall with five from 15 games. Furthermore, if there’s one manager who knows how to take advantage of organisational weaknesses in such scenarios, it’s undoubtedly Allardyce.

That being said, the Toffees have scored just three times from set pieces in the top flight this season, all coming at Goodison Park, so some extra work is needed on the training pitch before Sunday’s 2.15pm kickoff comes around.

Revealed: Most Southampton fans keen for risky Danny Ings capture

Danny Ings has seen his career stutter since making the move from Burnley to Liverpool in 2015.

Injuries have been a major hinderance during his time on Merseyside, and it has restricted him to just six Premier League starts in three seasons.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255574″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Four World Cup myths debunked”]

With manager Jurgen Klopp having Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane providing the main attacking threat, it is difficult to see a place for Ings, even when fit.

Understandably, that is why the 25-year-old is open to leaving Anfield and seeking pastures new, according to the Daily Mail.

Southampton should certainly be keeping an eye out for a new attacking player considering how lacklustre they were in front of goal last season.

Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Charlie Austin failed to deliver consistently, and while it may seem like a bizarre suggestion to sign a player like Ings who has barely touched the pitch in recent years, there is a risk worth taking.

When fit, Ings has the ability to be a reliable goalscorer, and he would fit into the Southampton team.

Judging by the outcome of our recent poll the fans feel the same way.

Manchester City should target N’Zonzi after failed pursuit of Jorginho

Manchester City recently announced the signing of long-term target Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City and, with the Algerian winger secured, the Premier League champions are now likely to only add a midfielder to their squad before calling it a day in this transfer window.

However, one name that will not be arriving at Manchester City is Napoli’s Jorginho. The Brazilian-born Italy international has long been linked with a move to the Etihad, but Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, has stated Jorginho is close to joining Chelsea, with Maurizio Sarri set to succeed Antonio Conte as Blues boss.

The Breakdown

Jorginho was Guardiola’s primary target to reinforce the midfield and provide competition for Fernandinho; failing to sign the 26-year-old will come as a huge blow having already missed out on Fred to rivals Manchester United.

Manchester City have since be rumoured to be interested in Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic (via Daily Mirror) who, although is not exactly like-for-like, would still be a very good alternative to Jorginho.

If for whatever reason director of football Txiki Begiristain cannot bring Kovacic to the Etihad though, then the club should consider buying Steven N’Zonzi from Sevilla.

£27m-rated (via Transfermarkt) N’Zonzi may not be the most thrilling name out there for Manchester City supporters, but the Frenchman is capable of carrying out the duties of a defensive midfielder in a Guardiola team.

On top of his height and power, N’Zonzi has the ability to recycle possession effectively and start attacks – at £35m (N’Zonzi’s release clause via the Independent), Guardiola would be getting the same profile of midfielder as Jorginho for significantly less.

With Manchester City no longer interested in getting into bidding wars, players such as N’Zonzi can be very effective plan Bs.

Liverpool should consider move for Navas if Real Madrid bring in new man

Liverpool should consider trying to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas if the Spanish club recruit a new signing.

What’s the word?

Jurgen Klopp has plenty of strength in his team, but one major weakness is the goalkeeping position.

Loris Karius made two costly blunders in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in May.

The performance sparked a big call for a new shot-stopper from the fans, and even though the Reds have been linked to numerous names, no deals have been struck.

Alisson, Jan Oblak, Jasper Cillessen and Jack Butland have been among the rumour mill, but one name that has not been widely considered as an option is Navas.

The Costa Rica international has been at Real Madrid since 2014, but it appears that the club want a new number one.

According to Sport, Los Blancos are closing in on the signing of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea.

If a deal goes through, then Navas may be forced to consider his options.

Why would this work for Liverpool?

The Merseyside outfit have often been criticised for not having a world-class stopper between the sticks.

Karius and number two Simon Mignolet have been ridiculed numerous times by rivals in recent seasons.

Having Navas at the helm, though, could potentially silence the critics as he has performed on the biggest stage.

The 31-year-old, who is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, may not be deemed good enough anymore for Real Madrid, but he is certainly an upgrade on Karius.

Navas has won 10 trophies with the Spanish giants, including the La Liga title and three Champions League crowns.

If Madrid finalise a deal for Courtois, or any other keeper, then it might be easier for Liverpool to strike an agreement for Navas.

Tottenham should snap up Gonzalo Martinez who could be their secret weapon next season

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing River Plate midfielder Gonzalo Martinez according to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato.

What’s the story?

The 25-year-old playmaker joined Argentine giants River Plate in 2015 and last season scored six goals and assisted three in 21 appearances in the Primera Division.

The diminutive midfielder is a reported transfer target for Lazio, Everton, Southampton and Tottenham and according to the latest update, his agent has been spotted in England trying to get his client a move.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

Is he worth it?

Martinez reportedly has a release clause of £13.25million which makes him relatively cheap considering the state of the market at the moment.

Although South American players have often struggled when moving straight to the Premier League, the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero have shown it can be done, and Martinez has an Italian passport so doesn’t need a work permit.

He could be a useful player to have in Tottenham’s squad as he is a player that knows how to unlock stubborn defences and find that pass which others don’t, something they have struggled with in recent seasons.

Celtic must make ambitious Anthony Knockaert swoop if Brighton sign Jahanbakhsh

According to reports in The Daily Mail, Brighton and Hove Albion are in talks over a club-record £20m deal to sign AZ Alkmaar winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh, and Scottish Premiership side Celtic should be watching developments closely.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Daily Mail report that the Seagulls are in discussions to bring the Iran international, who featured for his country at the World Cup in Russia this summer, to the Amex Stadium, with Chris Hughton looking to boost his attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

The 24-year-old primarily plays on the right wing and that is where he has really been shining for the Eredivisie club, scoring 37 goals and providing a further 31 assists in 111 appearances in all competitions.

Should he arrive on the south coast of England, he would be competing with the likes of Jose Izquierdo, Anthony Knockaert and Solly March, as well as potentially Florin Andone and Jurgen Locadia, for a spot in the starting XI.

Why should Celtic be monitoring the situation?

Well, if Brighton are spending £20m on a player you would expect him to be a guaranteed spot in Chris Hughton’s team, and that is likely to be on his preferred right wing position – one that Knockaert often filled last term.

With Jose Izquierdo impressing on the opposite flank, it could be the tricky Frenchman that finds himself on the substitutes’ bench, which could prove to be frustrating for the 26-year-old.

Of course the Bhoys, who must also look to boost their centre-back options with a bargain £3m deal, are in desperate need of a new winger having seen Patrick Roberts go back to Manchester City following a loan spell, and there is no doubt that Knockaert is a player that would thrive in the Scottish Premiership.

The offer of Champions League football – something the former Leicester City man looks unlikely to achieve while playing for the Seagulls – could tempt him to move north of the border if Rodgers makes his move.
