Leeds fans furious with Myanmar defeat

Leeds United suffered a 2-1 defeat to Myanmar National League All-Stars on Wednesday in the first match of their controversial post-season tour.

The club’s plans for the trip, which were finalised at the end of last month, were met by a storm of criticism.

Samuel Saiz was on the scoresheet for the Championship outfit, but they were beaten 2-1, and will now take on the Myanmar national team on Friday.

The Leeds supporters are fairly sensitive at the moment after a disappointing 2017-18 Championship campaign saw them finish down in 13th position in the table.

The majority want head coach Paul Heckingbottom to be sacked before the start of the new season, and a number are just unhappy in general.

News of the team’s 2-1 defeat was never going to bring a positive reaction on social media, and as expected, the Leeds fans were out in force to reveal their fury once again.

A selection of the Twitter reaction to the loss can be seen below:

Revealed: Majority of Man United fans want Memphis Depay back at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay scored a hat-trick for Lyon to take them into the Champions League on Sunday, and his performance didn’t go unnoticed by Red Devils fans on Twitter, who urged their club to bring him back to Old Trafford.

The treble in the 3-2 win against Nice at the weekend took the Netherlands international’s goal tally for the season to 22 in 51 appearances in all competitions, while he also provided a further 17 assists.

That was a far cry from his form when he was with United, where he was labelled a flop after finding the net on just seven occasions – and picking up six assists – in 53 outings before he was sold to Lyon in January 2017.

However, Jose Mourinho’s men’s problems in attack were highlighted during the dismal 1-0 FA Cup final defeat against Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday, when the likes of Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez failed to fire with Romelu Lukaku only fit enough for a spot on the substitutes’ bench.

We asked Man United fans to vote on our poll to see whether they would like Depay to return to Old Trafford, and a majority 70% said they would.

It remains to be seen whether Mourinho would move for the Dutchman seeing as he plays on the left wing – like Sanchez and Anthony Martial – but he will certainly be on the radar if he is looking to bring in a new wide player this summer.

World Cup is a great platform for Carvalho to show he is ready for Premier League and Everton

As reported by Sky Sports, Everton target William Carvalho is actively looking for a move to the English Premier League this summer, aided by his club Sporting Lisbon.

What’s the story?

The Toffees are embarking on a new era at Goodison Park after the official announcement of Marco Silva as manager.

Now, a strong summer transfer window is required if they are to match their ambitions of breaking into the established English Premier League top six.

One player on their radar is William Carvalho, according to Sky Sports, who also report that Sporting Lisbon are actively seeking a deal for him in the upcoming transfer window.

The outlet reckon that Sporting are working with the player’s representatives to secure a move to the English Premier League.

He was previously rated as worth £40m to the Portuguese side, say Sky Sports.

Is he ready for a move to England?

The Premier League is a definite step up from the Portuguese top-flight, so there is an element of risk to a big money move for the Sporting midfielder.

Carvalho helped his side to a third placed finish in Primeira Liga in 2017/18 with his form considered good enough to be an expected starter for Portugal in the upcoming World Cup.

A defensively minded midfielder with strong technical passing and ball carrying ability, he could provide the Toffees midfield with stability next season and the platform for their more creative players to attack the opposition.

The summer tournament is a great chance for Everton and their supporters to have a closer look at the kind of impact he can make at the elite level, although they may want to move quick on his signature if Sporting are actively trying to sell him.

It’s a great platform and a strong showing for the 41-cap international could alert teams higher up the food chain than the Toffees.

In-demand Armstrong would boost West Bromwich Albion’s midfield

West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong this summer, according to the Daily Record.

What’s the word?

Baggies manager Darren Moore has an important few months ahead as he tries to shape a squad worthy of promotion back to the Premier League.

One man who has emerged as a potential target currently plies his trade in Glasgow as part of Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic squad.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”252976″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch 21 things that will definitely happen at the World Cup”]

The Daily Record reports that top-flight sides Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton are also keen on the  26-year-old, who has earned six caps for the Scotland national team.

The publication claims that Celtic are open to offers as they want to avoid Armstrong leaving the club for nothing when his contract expires next summer.

What can he bring to the table?

Armstrong started just 15 Scottish Premiership matches last season and came off the bench in a further 12.

In 35 appearances in all competitions, the midfielder scored four goals, which is not the best return, but if given a regular starting spot, the Scotsman has it in his arsenal to find the back of the net.

Armstrong would certainly inject some creativity into West Brom’s team, and he can also pull the strings from the middle of the park or push further forward.

Do West Brom have a chance?

Game time would not be an issue for the midfielder, but the Baggies are at a disadvantage for being in the Championship.

It appears that a handful of Premier League outfits hold an interest in Armstrong, so the offer of playing top-flight football could be too strong to turn down.

From West Brom’s point of view, they should certainly argue their case, but if a lengthy bidding war ensues, they should perhaps consider other targets.

Ziyech would be creative addition to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur should consider making a move for Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech following his performances at the World Cup.

What’s the word?

The North London outfit could do with another creative player in their squad next season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have established themselves as regular top-four contenders, but they need strength in depth in order to take that next step.

One playmaker who could fall on the club’s radar is Ziyech, who has performed well for Morocco at the World Cup in Russia.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255896″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Tottenham’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, his nation’s tournament is over.

The damage was done on Wednesday when Portugal earned a 1-0 victory, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the goal.

Individually, though, Ziyech put on a decent display, which could potentially attract interest from other clubs.

Is he good enough for Tottenham?

It is easy to be drawn to the high-profile names during the transfer hunt, but there are some gems that would be worth snapping up.

Tottenham’s main creative outlet in midfield comes from Christian Eriksen, but Ziyech has the qualities to provide a different dynamic to Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Last season, the Moroccan scored nine goals in 35 appearances in all competitions for Ajax, but more impressively created 17 assists for his teammates.

If Tottenham are in the market for a new attacking midfielder, then Ziyech should be on the pile of candidates, particularly as he could be a cheaper option that some other targets.

West Ham target Jack Wilshere would help them secure Europa League football

According to reports in The Sun on Sunday, West Ham United believe they can compete the signing of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the England international’s contract with the north London outfit expires at the end of the month, and the two parties haven’t yet come to an agreement with The Sun on Sunday saying that Wilshere held talks with Unai Emery last Monday.

The Sun on Sunday says that the Spanish boss told the 26-year-old that he wants him to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but they aren’t willing to increase their £100,000-a-week offer – which would see the midfielder take a wage cut.

The report adds that West Ham, who should forget Alfie Mawson and sign a £10m-rated Championship centre-back instead, are willing to hand him a four-year deal worth £130,000-a-week, and Manuel Pellegrini has told him that he wants to build his newly-inherited team around him.

[ad_pod ]

How did Wilshere do during the 2017/18 campaign?

At the beginning of the season it seemed almost certain that the 26-year-old would be leaving the Emirates this summer, but he quickly became more and more of a starter under Arsene Wenger despite spending the previous campaign on loan at Bournemouth.

Wilshere made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing a further seven assists.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”256220″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Chattin’ Shirt World Cup Absentees”]

Would he be a good West Ham signing?

He certainly would be.

The 26-year-old may have suffered his fair share of injury problems in recent years, but there is no doubting the quality he has.

He would be a huge character in the middle of the park for the Irons, and he would be a real statement signing on a permanent basis.

The England international would bring some bite and an ability to bring the ball forward, and he would help the east London club secure Europa League football next term.

Liverpool sign Gerrard’s cousin from Manchester City, fans react

Liverpool have finally welcomed Naby Keita to the club after agreeing to sign the midfielder from RB Leipzig last year.

Another new player has also reportedly joined the club, and he has a very close association with Anfield legend Steven Gerrard.

Numerous media outlets, including The Telegraph, reported on Wednesday that Manchester City youngster Bobby Duncan will become a Liverpool player on July 1.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255848″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Liverpool’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

It is believed that the Merseyside outfit have paid £200,000 to seal the signature of the 17-year-old, who is Gerrard’s cousin.

The teenager joined City’s academy at 11 years old, but has opted against signing a contract at the North-West outfit.

Liverpool idol worried star man will follow Suarez

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is worried that the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid will come calling for Philippe Coutinho in the not too distant future and that it will be “tricky” for the Reds to keep their man.

The Merseysiders have made a habit of offloading their biggest names in recent memory, with Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso and Luis Suarez having all left to join La Liga’s big two clubs, while stars such as Fernando Torres and Raheem Sterling have joined domestic rivals for huge fees.

Although big players have left, Liverpool have been able to secure replacements, and Coutinho appears to be the next in line to be the ‘main man’ and Anfield following his development since the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

And Gerrard, who left the club to join LA Galaxy over the summer, wrote in his new autobiography, My Story, Gerrard (cited by the Liverpool Echo), that he is concerned the Brazil international may be the next in line to leave the club for a bigger challenge:

“Philippe is wonderfully gifted and I expect him to become Liverpool’s leading player. Many Liverpool fans already regard him as our main man.

“He has just signed a new deal and he and his wife — who are a lovely couple — seem settled here.

“But I also know that the Spanish giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid, will come looking for Philippe in a few more seasons, just like they did with Luis. And that’s when it will get tricky for Liverpool because the lure to go to one of those two clubs is so strong for any South American or Spanish player.

“Until that happens, Liverpool should really treasure Philippe.”

Gerrard also revealed that Suarez personally asked him to help Coutinho on and off the pitch when he left the club to join Barca in 2014:

“Before Luis Suarez left Liverpool’s training ground for the last time he spoke to me about Philippe Coutinho,

“‘Make sure you look after him,’” Luis said of Philippe.

“That told me how much Suarez rated Coutinho as a player. I knew they were close, because all the South Americans and Spaniards loved Luis.

“But it struck a chord with me when Luis singled out Philippe as our most special young talent. It echoed my own view.”

10 things we learned from England’s European Qualifiers

As the dust settles on what must surely (on paper at least) be considered one of England’s best ever qualifying campaigns, commentators and pundits are now racing to answer some tricky questions; what did we learn from the games? Are England now in reasonable shape for the tournament? How far can they go? Can they even win it?!Unfortunately it’s a case of ‘almost certainly not’ as far as that last one is concerned, but there are a few issues thatÂrequire slightly more than a simple rebuttal. Here’s my humble take on what Roy & co. may have taken from the last 9 games…The team has not been properly tested yet – Aside from some self-inflicted pressure in Slovenia when the defence capitulated alarmingly easily twice and stood aside like a yawning whale for the home side to waltz through and score, actual pressure during games has been rare.In fact, the friendlies have given us much more tension and pressure, with a cauldron-like atmosphere in Glasgow last year testing the players mettle before going to Italy in the spring and facing a growing and confident Azurri. In this respect, the friendlies against Spain and France later this month, and Germany early next year, will tell us a lot more about how the players can handle big games. Especially the defence, which takes me neatly onto point two…..[ffc-gal cat=”premier-league” no=”5″]This defence does not inspire tremendous confidence – after the glory-years of Terry, Ferdinand, Neville and Cole, this England defence is still a real work in progress. Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka did not look altogether convincing at the World Cup and it is hard to see how they can have improved given the one-sided nature of the qualifying games. Practice, and plenty of it, against the worlds best teams is vital ahead of the summer. But the strike force does – any team that can have Daniel Sturridge consistently out of the side and still not look too short of strikers is clearly a force to be reckoned with. With Rooney, Kane, Welbeck and Sturridge all strikers to be feared in the Premier League, and back up including Danny Ings, Jamie Vardy and possibly Charlie Austin, Hodgson can feel confident in how his side looks going forward. The wingers don’t look too shabby either – depending how the team lines up in France next year, the wingers could either be part of a midfield four or three up front. Whatever the formation, they deserve respect from the opposition. Townsend, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott and Sterling all have the capability to frighten the life out of defences with their pace, and they can all finish if given the opportunity as well. But Roy must sort out the centre of midfield before it’s too late – Henderson, Lallana, Barkley, Carrick, Delph, Wilshere…… Who is England’s first choice centre midfield pairing?! None of the players mentioned above have let the side down, but then the opposition they’ve been playing against have made most games a stroll in the park.Depending on whether Roy feels like sitting in and countering or going on the offensive, he can set up a different side, which must be looked at as a positive. However, a little continuity might be nice.Barkley must play a key role – worthy of an article in itself, this debate might just decide how far England go next year. If Hodgson can conquer his natural conservatism and trust the talented playmaker from the start, he could reward them in spectacular style. His early-season performances for Everton show his startling ability and promise. Now is the time for him to realise that potential.Hodgson manages best when he lets exciting young talent loose – having previously mentioned that England must not rely on their defence for too much in the tournament, Hodgson must realise that the best form of defence is attack, and let his forwards take it to the opposition. We have to appreciate exciting qualifiers when they come around – due to the ranking system, games during qualifying do tend to be dull, cagey affairs against a side of limited ability. That’s why the games against Scotland before the 2018 World Cup will be so enjoyable – the passion of that rivalry remains undimmed by time. There are too many teams in these qualifiers – qualifying for a major tournament should never be a boring chore, but that’s exactly what this campaign turned into. FIFA and UEFA must look long and hard about whether the minnows who now sup at the same table as the worlds finest deserve their automatic place there.Despite that, it’s going to be a great tournament! After such a long build up (around 13 months by the time the playoffs are decided), it’ll be nice to see the groups, start to plot potential routes to the final and get down to the serious business of acquiring wall charts and England car flags like there’s no tomorrow.

Why Man Utd legend is right – Arsenal’s boss is irreplaceable

Sir Alex Ferguson, a man who knows a thing or two about managing a big club for a number of years, has recently commented on the ongoing situation at Arsenal. The famous old Scotsman, a fierce rival of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger in his day, posed a question with a rather obvious answer.

“Who are they going to get that’s better than Arsene Wenger?”

Exactly. There isn’t anyone. The Frenchman has steered the club in the right direction for pretty much all of his 19 years in charge, a feat made even more impressive when you consider he had to negotiate some financial restrictions for a number of years.

While Jurgen Klopp was available, a temptation may have been there to indulge in thoughts about a potential change. However, following his appointment at Liverpool the pool of top level talent available grows ever smaller.

Perhaps it’s unfair to state Wenger should remain in charge simply due to the lack of other options. He’s achieved too much for that notion to be even remotely entertained, and can still offer more.

Despite some disappointed losses this season, they sit second in the league and are in keeping with the expected title challenge proposed at the start of the campaign going. Over the past two seasons, the Gunners have started to excel in bigger games, beating the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and recently Manchester United. The perception that Arsenal don’t perform in the big games is being proved false, with dominant wins over Manchester United and Chelsea (albeit in the Community Shield), and a sound defensive display against Manchester City away last year.

Further to this, talents such as Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech have arrived at the club across the last two years… How many other sides outside of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich can point to such quality signings over a similar period?

Calls for a top defensive midfielder to be introduced into the side were answered, with the emergence of Francis Coquelin. Granted, an element of luck has been part of his rise as one of the most ferocious tacklers in the league, but Wenger’s decision to deploy him in a holding role speaks volumes about his ability as a coach. He’s not just a chequebook manager.

Theo Walcott is another who’s been coached into a different role with much success, crafting himself into one of the most lethal forwards in the league.

After the David Moyes fiasco, it’s clear that changing a long term manager is a very tricky situation to manage.

Wins against their biggest rivals, bringing in quality players and excellent coaching. A pretty good record, wouldn’t you agree?

Not to mention the consecutive FA Cup wins, finishing above fierce rivals Tottenham for 20 years and always steering the club to the Champions League.

Arsene is irreplaceable.
