Leeds seriously looking to sign £25m star after Meslier's Swansea mistake

Leeds United are now seriously interested in signing an “excellent” £25 million ace to replace Illan Meslier should they be promoted to the Premier League, according to a new report.

Farke remains confident Leeds' promotion will be sealed

It looked as though it was going to be another successful weekend for the Whites on Saturday afternoon, as they were closing in on another three points to move them a step closer to promotion. However, a mistake by goalkeeper Meslier was punished not once but twice, as his fumble allowed Harry Darling to equalise at 1-1 and then Zan Vipotnik’s shot in the 96th minute snuck under the Leeds goalkeeper.

It is not the first time that Meslier has cost his side all three points this season, but despite the fact the Whites have only won one of their last five matches, their worst form of this campaign, Daniel Farke remains confident that Leeds will still win promotion to the Premier League.

“We have gone many, many steps, and right now it’s the final step. That’s always the most difficult,” the boss said this weekend.

“There’s never a guarantee of success, but we have been in this situation before. I know how tricky it sometimes is to lead from the front, but also what is necessary to bring it over the line, and we will try everything to make sure the lads have the best chance to make the final step. If you ask me right now, I’m 100% convinced that next season we will play in the Premier League.”

Leeds looking to replace Meslier with Southampton star Ramsdale

Given Farke is confident that his side will be a top-flight team next season, it may be no surprise to see plans are already being worked on for the summer, and a new goalkeeper seems to be high on the agenda. According to TEAMtalk, Leeds have now placed Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on their transfer shortlist should promotion be sealed.

The report states that the Whites are now seriously looking to sign a new number one this summer, given the mistakes that Meslier has made this season, despite Farke’s public backing of the Frenchman. Meslier’s contract expires in 2026, so Leeds will have a decision to make on his long-term future, and this summer could be the only realistic chance to cash in and upgrade.

However, Leeds are not the only team interested in signing Ramsdale, as AFC Bournemouth are also keeping an eye on things and could make a move once the Saints are relegated.

Newcastle United are also fans of the goalkeeper and could move for him as they eye a long-term replacement for Nick Pope. The also adds that Ramsdale has a relegation clause in his contract, and any club wanting to sign him will have to offer him the guarantee of football, as he wants to compete for the England number one spot.

Leeds’ chances of signing Ramsdale, who cost the Saints £25 million in the summer, do rest on them securing promotion to the Premier League, as the Englishman is looking to remain in the top flight. Despite the fact that Southampton have been terrible in the Premier League this season, Ramsdale has impressed many, with former England goalkeeper Joe Hart labelling his performances as “absolutely excellent”.

Jess Jonassen in awe of Beth Mooney doing Beth Mooney things

Amy Jones also praised Mooney and noted that England are closing gap with Australia

Valkerie Baynes02-Jul-2023On her previous visit to Edgbaston in Australian colours, Beth Mooney formed the crux of her side’s gold medal-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games and so it was again, before 19,527 people in Birmingham, against England, that she ushered the visitors to within one more victory of retaining the Women’s Ashes. Her 61 off 41 balls against India set Australia up for a narrow nine-run victory last August before Ashleigh Gardner turned the screw with two wickets in as many balls and three for the match. On Saturday night, opener Mooney expertly marshalled Australia’s pursuit of 154 with an identical score – this time unbeaten and off 47 balls – in another tight finish as wickets fell around her, all the while exuding the calm that defined her earlier innings here and which is a trademark of not only her game, but that of this entire Australian team. For evidence of that calm, confidence that permeates a side which has won 23 of their past 24 completed T20Is, take Annabel Sutherland’s four through deep-backward square on the first ball she faced coming in at No. 7, with Australia needing 14 runs off the last nine balls of the game, followed by another back over the head off the best bowler in the shortest format, Sophie Ecclestone. Or No. 8 Georgia Wareham, coming in after Sutherland’s dismissal with the scores tied and two balls remaining, punching her first ball to cover and scrambling a single with Mooney, who had placed the ball effortlessly over the covers on the last ball of the penultimate over to help ease the pressure on her side.Related

Classy Mooney keeps her cool to hand Australia thrilling win

As put by Jess Jonassen, the left-arm spinner who took 3 for 25 to restrict England to what looked like an easily achievable target before Australia lost four wickets for 23 runs in the space of 17 balls, Beth Mooney was just doing Beth Mooney things.”She’s incredible and she has a phenomenal record in chasing as well,” Jonassen said. “She just knows the tempo to go at and she’s quite an incredible manipulator of the field as well. It makes it quite tricky. I always find her one of the hardest people to bowl to in the nets, so it’s always nice in international cricket when she’s finally on my side.”She was incredible. She really held that run chase together and allowed a lot of the others, like Tahlia McGrath and Ash Gardener when they teed off at different points as well, she was able to play that role and then equally hitting a few crucial boundaries at really important times as well. So yeah, she’s just doing Beth Mooney things pretty much.”McGrath had been ticking along nicely, adding 40 off 29 balls before she was stumped by Amy Jones, the England wicketkeeper who also played a blinder with the bat to keep the hosts in the game, while Gardner scored 31 off 23 balls before she was caught behind.Australia made a few rare fielding errors in this match, but they held their nerve when it counted most, as they so often seem to do.”It got quite tight there in the end, but an incredible spectacle,” Jonassen said. “We knew we had the firepower in the sheds to be able to chase that down, it just happened that it was off the second-last ball.”A big thing we speak about as a group and something we think is a real bonus of what we can all bring is that composure and that calmness under pressure, and in high-pressure moments. So even though there were probably a few nerves internally… trying to not show it on the outside and to trust and to back your skills and your preparation and know that you’ve been there many times before. It’s sport, it can be cruel, sometimes you come off second best; but we’ve found as a group, the more calm and composed we’ve stayed, we’ve generally come out on top.”Beth Mooney steered Australia through to the end with her 61*•Getty ImagesJones was one of only three England batters to reach double figures, her 40 from 21 balls was crucial after Sophia Dunkley scored a half-century and Heather Knight scored 29 off 22. Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Sarah Glenn all claimed two wickets each and Jones believes England are closing the gap on this Australian side.”Mooney batted really well and to have a batter bat the whole way through, you give yourself the best chance really, so I think she was probably the difference there,” Jones said. “The gap feels like it’s closing. They’ve earned the right to have all those compliments and they have been formidable really over the last few years. We felt like underdogs the whole way through but I think the Test match and today, the confidence is growing and it feels to us as if the gap is closing and that’s a really exciting feeling amongst us.”Australia now lead the multi-format series 6-0, having won last week’s Test at Trent Bridge, which was worth four points. They now need to win just one of their remaining five games to draw the series and retain the Ashes, while England must win all five if they are to win the Ashes for the first time since 2013-14.For Jones’ part, she will be hoping to maintain the form which saw her produce an innings that was “up there” in terms of personal highlights, having switched her focus from the Test, in which she scored 13 and 4 and moved to a more instinctive mindset under head coach Jon Lewis.”I just refocused on what works for me in that in this format, resetting and thinking about those things really helped me,” Jones said. “That’s how I want to go out and play every game, so I think when it does come off I can take a lot of confidence from that for sure. If something creeps into my head – if I want to reverse, just reverse – no doubt. If something pops in just go for it, reminding myself of that.”England left out quick Issy Wong for the match on her home Edgbaston pitch, which was prepared by an all-female ground staff and offered good pace and carry. She was released from the T20 squad to play in the final 50-over match between England A and Australia A on Sunday with the Australians having won the first two fixtures.

Gyokeres' transfer plans to leave Lisbon reportedly took a hit when Sporting president Frederico Varandas backtracked on a verbal agreement to sell him for €70 million (£60m/$82m), subsequently raising the asking price. After days of mounting speculation, the Swedish forward took to Instagram to share a cryptic post acknowledging the ongoing talks and claiming the timing wasn't right.

"There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right," he wrote.

Gyokeres' rise under Ruben Amorim, Sporting CP's former head coach, solidified his status as one of the elite forwards available in the market. The 27-year-old scored 54 goals and provided 13 assists in 52 games for the Portuguese club in the 2024-25 campaign. The forward has been in talks to make a move, but unforeseen circumstances have now complicated the situation for Gyokeres.

The situation is further complicated by reports that the Portuguese club leaked details of a minor surgery Gyokeres underwent, which both parties had agreed to keep confidential to ward off interest from other clubs. This further damaged the relationship between them, with reports also suggesting the forward has threatened the club with going on strike.

Andrew McDonald: 'Two-Test series should be put on the back burner'

Australia coach wants all Test series to have a minimum of three games to “show the importance of Test cricket to every nation”

Andrew McGlashan02-Aug-2023Australia coach Andrew McDonald has called for all Test series to be a minimum of three matches in order to show a commitment to the format. His comments came in the aftermath of the gripping 2-2 Ashes draw, which saw Australia retain the urn but England bounce back from defeats in the opening two matches.McDonald is not a fan of the two-match series, which is the minimum requirement for those played under the World Test Championship, and is usually the maximum length for a series outside of those involving at least one of Australia, England and India.Related

Australia take home the mace and the urn, but no gold star

Ashes series remain over five matches while the Border-Gavaskar contest will expand to that number when India tour Australia in 2024-25, and McDonald would like to see an additional game added to other series too.”I’d encourage that the minimum number of Tests against a nation should be three,” he said. “I think two-Test-match series should be put on the back burner and that would show the importance of Test cricket to every nation if it was a minimum of three Test matches.”Australia’s next home season will feature a three-match series against Pakistan and two matches against West Indies before a tour of New Zealand that also features two Tests.McDonald was also asked about the potential for Ashes series to be played over six Tests, as they have been at previous times in history, given that Australia and England had both played that number of games over the last two months, with respective matches against India and Ireland. He quipped at whether England had been asked their views, referencing their stances on various issues about how the game might be played, but acknowledged scheduling would be a challenge.”Did you ask that question to England, because they’re usually the ones that are I suppose forecasting what the rules should be going forward in the laws of the game,” he said. “I think a six-Test-match series, now that we’ve had a drawn series, it’s like the two-Test series against certain nations when it ends up one-all you walk away from that thinking ‘geez, what about another one’.”I don’t know where it fits, though. I think that’s probably a question for [ICC’s] Geoff Allardice and Wasim Khan.”1:43

McGlashan: Bazball puts oppositions under such pressure

When pushed to reflect on the drawn Ashes and the gripping nature of the series, McDonald acknowledged it had been fantastic viewing even though Australia had been unable to turn their 2-0 lead into a first series win in England since 2001.”There was two contrasting styles coming in and it just shows you that you don’t have to play one way in Test-match cricket. And I think that was captivating for most people on the outside,” he said. “Even if it was 3-1 and we’d won that, or it was 3-1 to England, the whole way that both teams went about it – Pat [Cummins] leading our side, Ben [Stokes] leading England, the way the teams prepared and went about their work – [they] had some key decision to make in selection, it all meshed into this weird and wonderful series. It was fascinating.”The series was played to full houses throughout and though those crowds were, as would be expected, massively in favour of England, McDonald understood that the support for Test cricket could only be a good thing.”You love seeing people line up the gates, and you get to the ground in the morning and there’s just a murmur, there’s a buzz,” he said. “And they’re keen to go and watch a Test match. To me, that’s really important for the landscape of Test-match cricket.”It was exciting, and there were a lot of English supporters who said well done and congratulations, so I think it captivated a nation. I think it captivated our nation as well, and I think that’s a real positive thing for Test cricket.”

Kent survival bid held up by rain, Tom Lammonby ton

Michael Hogan injury hampers visitors as Somerset build strong position after being asked to bat

ECB Reporters Network19-Sep-2023Tom Lammonby repaid Somerset’s faith with his first century of the season as the hosts ran up 214 for 2 after losing the toss on a rain-shortened opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with relegation-threatened Kent at Taunton.Having played in all 12 previous games without reaching three figures, the 23-year-old opener got the monkey off his back in style by hitting a brilliant 109 off 151 balls, with 16 fours. Lewis Goldsworthy marked his first Championship appearance of the season by making 70 not out and contributing to a second-wicket stand of 132.Kent’s woes were compounded by an injury to Michael Hogan, the 42-year-old seamer limping off disconsolately with what looked like a hamstring or thigh problem having bowled 11.2 overs for 30 runs.Morning rain led to a 1.45pm start, with the day’s play initially being reduced to 63 overs, and Kent’s bowlers looked to have ideal conditions when they took the field. The pitch was green and the floodlights were already on beneath overcast skies. But, having left out their specialist spinners, the visitors’ seam attack failed to get enough balls in the right areas to capitalise on any movement, allowing Lammonby and Tom Abell to make a positive start to the Somerset innings.Skipper Abell, promoted to opener in the absence of Sean Dickson, whose partner has just given birth, gave a more solid look to the top order, while Lammonby went for his shots from the outset, producing two fine straight drives for boundaries. The left-hander hit three fours in an over from Arafat Bhuiyan, who struggled for line and length in his opening spell. Hogan switched ends after bowling three overs, but was unable to make a mark, while being typically economical.First-innings runs have long been a problem for Somerset, but Lammonby and Abell comfortably brought up a half-century stand in the 14th over, the former moving to a fluent fifty off 52 balls, with 10 fours.Their partnership had reached 73 when Abell, on 20, played a loose shot to an Arafat delivery wide of off stump and edged to Tawanda Muyeye at first slip. By then Somerset were well placed and Goldsworthy, also batting higher in the order than usual having spent much of the season in the 2nd XI, helped Lammonby build on their encouraging start. The pair notched another half-century stand off 83 balls, both producing an array of attacking shots in taking the score to 127 for 1 off 31 overs at tea. Lammonby had played and missed a few times, but otherwise looked in fine form to be unbeaten on 70.He gave a chance on 76 at the start of the final session when Daniel Bell-Drummond spilled a sharp chance at gully off Jaskaran Singh before a two through the leg side off Hogan took him to his highest score of the summer, beating the 78 made against Lancashire at Old Trafford. The dependable Hogan departed soon afterwards and Kent’s attack lacked variety as Goldsworthy moved to 49, before more rain brought a short interruption, with three more overs lost. His fifty occupied 85 balls, with seven fours, surely laying down a marker for regular selection next season.A single off Joey Evison took Lammonby to his hundred off 137 balls. It had been an apparently effortless innings packed with sweetly timed strokes, but hopes that he would still be there at stumps ended when he nibbled at a decent delivery from Bell-Drummond and edged through to wicketkeeper Harry Finch.Goldsworthy’s innings lost nothing by comparison and he was still there, having faced 150 balls and hit nine fours, when bad light ended play for the day at 5.55pm, with a possible 6.4 more overs to be bowled.

With the opening phase of the new-look tournament now complete, it's time to reflect on who's surpassed expectations and who's fallen woefully short

No-one really knew what to expect from the revamped Club World Cup, as the planet's elite flew out to the United States for the expanded summer tournament. But after a rip-roaring group stage that has thrown up no shortage of drama, suffice to say we are locked in.

But who have been the success stories and surprise packages, who's surpassed expectations and who has fallen woefully short? Here are GOAL's winners and losers from the Club World Cup group stage…

GettyWINNER: Brazilian clubs

Not only have Brazil's representatives brought the vibes to their matches that many others have dearly lacked, with their loud, colourful and fiercely passionate supporters, but their clubs have shown up on the pitch in a big way, too, proving to be the overall surprise package of he tournament so far.

Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense AND Botafogo have ALL progressed to the last 16 largely against the odds, with the latter producing the result of the tournament so far with a stunning 1-0 upset of European champions Paris Saint-Germain that made everyone sit up and take notice. The Brasileirao clubs are the story of the group stage.

AdvertisementAFPLOSER: Auckland City

It was always going to be tough going for part-timers Auckland City, who found themselves in the same group as two storied European clubs as well as Argentine giants Boca Juniors, but they were probably hoping for better than conceding 16 goals in the space of two games.

The New Zealanders were walloped 10-0 by Bavarian giants Bayern Munich before a less-heavy-but-still-ugly 6-0 thrashing by Benfica ended their extremely slim hopes of progressing. They did, however, bow out with a creditable 1-1 draw with Boca despite having just 26% of possession.

GettyWINNER: Estevao

All eyes have been on 18-year-old Estevao Willian in Palmeiras' games so far as the prodigy prepares to complete his long-awaited £56 million ($71m) switch to Chelsea post-tournament. So far, the wonderkid hasn't disappointed.

Without setting the world alight, the teenager claimed back-to-back player of the match awards against Porto and Al Ahly and delivered a third consecutive impressive performance against Inter Miami when facing one of his idols in Messi. The scary thing is there is clearly so much more to come; Chelsea must harness that potential.

AFPLOSER: Atletico Madrid

Victims of the success of the Brazilian clubs, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have crashed out of a group containing PSG, Botafogo and Seattle Sounders – mainly a result of a heavy opening defeat to the Champions League winners.

That 4-0 thumping and Botafogo's shock win over PSG meant Atleti had to beat the Brazilian side by a margin of at least three goals in their final game to progress to the last 16, but they could only manage a late 1-0 victory as they struggled to break down a staunch defence.

Kroos insisted more effort is required from Real Madrid's frontline players like Mbappe and Vinicius. The pair came in for criticism from some circles for a perceived lack of defensive work last season under Carlo Ancelotti, with their Champions League exit to Arsenal showing the difference between a hardworking lineup and one relying on moments of magic for success.

Mbappe and Vinicius have both enjoyed fruitful seasons in front of goal but they have recently been tasked with adapting to a new manager's ideas after Xabi Alonso replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the Bernabeu dugout. The Spaniard will demand more energy from his players than his predecessor and Kroos believes getting them to work well in defence is of paramount importance.

Tsimikas expressed in the message how himself and Jota arrived at Anfield the same year in 2020, growing at the club together and sharing some special memories. He spoke of their close relationship both on and off the pitch, between two players who may not be Scousers by birth, but who were welcomed into the Liverpool family as their own. Tsimikas is often lovingly referred to as the 'Greek Scouser' by fans, while Andy Robertson recently said Jota was "the most British foreign player he has ever met" in his own emotional tribute to the late forward.

WHAT TSIMIKAS SAID

Tsimikas begun his post on Instagram by quoting Jota's famous Liverpool chant: "Oh he wears the number 20 and his name is Diogo."

He continued: "We’ve moved to the club the same period. We were the new boys in the city. We’ve shared and celebrated some of our best moments of our careers together. Before one of our last ones you’ve said to me 'You cross, I score' and that’s what happened. We laughed and we talked about lots.

"You were a special player, a special guy, a true legend Diogo. You’ll always be remembered and always be loved. My heart and my prayers are with your Rute, your boys, your little girl, your family and everyone who loved and waited for you both to go home. You and your brother André will be missed forever."

Tsimikas then had some powerful words in Greek: "Good paradise Diogo and Andre. May God give strength to your loved ones to endure the nightmare and may they one day see the light again," he said.
