'Houston, we have a problem' – Mauricio Pochettino, Diego Luna and the winners and losers from the USMNT's embarrassing CONCACAF Nations League loss to Canada

After another inexplicable loss, Pochettino looked to the World Cup, saying "I prefer that this happen now rather than in one year"

LOS ANGELES – For many who follow the U.S. men's national team, the sky will feel like it is falling. Less than a year after a humbling Copa America exit, the U.S. were hit with another massive blow in the CONCACAF Nations League final. First, they were flat-out embarrassed by Panama in a 1-0 loss in the semifinals.

Canada then proceeded to kick them a few times while they were down, emerging with a 2-1 win in the third-place game Sunday night. It all led to one big takeaway: this team isn't as close as many hoped they were.

That's the negative of it all, but U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino is trying not to lean into the negatives. He, like everyone else, saw the performance. He was disappointed, too. The only good news is that there's still time, and Pochettino knows now he's going to have to make the most of it.

Just more than 400 days away from the 2026 World Cup, every moment it counts.

"I think we have time," he said. "If we will be in today's situation in one year's time, for sure, I will tell you 'Houston, we have a problem, SOS.' If, in one year, we are still talking about this, it's because we have a big problem. We were not able to discover or design a better strategy for the team to play better. I think we have time, and I prefer that this happen now rather than in one year."

That year feels closer than ever. So much needs to improve. Pochettino called for fight, desire and risk after Thursday's defeat, and he saw shades of all three. It wasn't sustained, though. Pochettino admitted that players need to be rewired into ones who can play with a certain confidence and attitude. That takes time.

Time, for now, is on the USMNT's side, but the road ahead is now more dangerous than ever. This summer will be a huge moment for this team, who will play two friendlies and a Gold Cup. It will be Pochettino's most extensive run with his group and, if the Nations League was any indication, he'll need every single day at his disposal.

While the likes of USMNT legends Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey voiced their frustration Sunday over the back-to-back losses – Pochettino has already lost to Mexico, Canada and Panama since taking the helm – the U.S. coach tried to remain upbeat.

"Today, you had the floor and tomorrow, you can be up here," Pochettino said. "I am very optimistic, a positive guy, even when I'm being angry and upset and disappointed. I want to find the positive things we can take from these two games. Who knows? No one knows how we are going to arrive at the World Cup and perform and, for sure, if these games are going to affect us, they are going to affect us in a positive way."

ImagnWINNER: Jesse Marsch

It's not often that the big winner is someone who was sent to the locker room with a red card but, hey, this was an unusual game. It would probably be unfair to say Marsch's dismissal paved the way for Jonathan David's moment of quality minutes later but, bigger picture, there's something to be said about that idea.

Since his arrival, Marsch has fought to instill his side with a sense of determination, grit and attitude. He showed them Canada Hockey's fights against the USA team in the Four Nations tournament to reinforce it. Then, in a moment in which he believed his side was getting disrespected, he, too, fought back, storming onto the field – and earning his marching orders as a result.

Moment of passion or a deliberate effort to back his team, only Marsch knows, but the players will no doubt have been fired up by their coach's actions. Since his arrival, Marsch has gone above and beyond to let his players know that he'll back them and Sunday was the best example yet. Facing the national team he once played for, Marsch might have been the most animated man on the field. That means something.

"I took this job knowing that this was not just a project of building a team – it was a project of building an association, a federation and building the sport around this country," he said in advance of Sunday's match. "I'm passionate about it."

If there were any doubts about that, they're gone now. Canada are desperate to be more, and their coach is more than willing to lead the charge, even from the locker room if need be.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLOSER: USMNT veteran players

Pochettino sidestepped his way around criticizing his team, but he offered one particularly damning comment.

"We talk about how to change the automatic pilot," he said. "You come back to your habits when it's not your normal habit. When you are conscious, you're thinking, 'I need to go, I need to press, I need to change the tempo, I need to go forward.' But the moment you become tired or some frustration happens in the game, you come back and your pilot appears and is going to drive itself. This is a process that we need to change."

All of that is to say that this team isn't yet wired in the way Pochettino wants. They can show moments of the fight and desire he called for leading up to this match but, in his opinion, that hasn't been ingrained into their psyche. They're still too calm, too relaxed, too patient as they wait for the game to go their way. In some games, that works. But both the Panama and Canada games needed seizing. It didn't happen.

Pochettino said he was happy with some stretches of the game, but also called on his veterans to remember what it means to wear the shirt.

Make no mistake: the best players on this U.S. team have good instincts. They show them regularly for top, top clubs. It's up to Pochettino to figure out how to awaken them but, as he points out, it's also up to players to re-program themselves after another humbling loss.

"With these two losses, it's definitely put our backs against the wall," Weston McKennie said. "The thing about having our backs against the wall is that the only way to go is forward. These two games were a wake-up call in general, for us, for the staff, for everyone to realize that we have to do better – and we have to fight more, finish our chances. We have to come together as a team."

Getty Images SportWINNER: Jonathan David

A moment of pure quality. It's the difference a player at that level can make and, on a night in which many of the USMNT's stars failed to find their level, Jonathan David absolutely did.

Several of CONCACAF's best were scattered throughout the pitch Sunday. One, Alphonso Davies, was forced out early. An injury took him out of the action early. How would Canada cope without a player as good as Davies? Who would step up and create the magic?

As it turns out, it was David, who tends to do those sorts of things. His perfectly curled winner ultimately decided the match while proving, again, that David deserves his place right up there among the stars in this region. This season has been a breakout with Lille, but he's vital to Canada, too, as they make their own push towards the 2026 World Cup.

Canada have a match-winner in David. He did just that on Sunday.

AFPLOSER: Mauricio Pochettino

Just days after saying that he believed that anything is possible for the USMNT, Pochettino had to reckon with back-to-back results that felt impossible. The USMNT had won this tournament three times under his predecessors. They lost both matches this time around to finish fourth among the final four.

It was a sign of how far this team has left to go and how much work Pochettino has to do. His hiring, rightfully, inspired optimism, but much of that positive air was sucked out of this program this week.

At one point, the the stadium big screen cut to Pochettino, and all he could do was shake his head. His team wasn't reaching the levels many expected. Several of the problems that were apparent against Panama reappeared against Canada, plain for everyone to see – including Pochettino.

"I see that this is the process and it's always painful when you lose," he said. "I don't like that people feel pessimistic or disappointed. We all are, and the fans can feel it, disappointed that we didn't win. But I'm not going to allow us to feel pessimistic because I think we have good players and we are going to find a way to perform.

"For sure, we are going to compete in a different way and, in the end, we are going to get different results than Thursday and today."

Now, though, Pochettino and the USMNT will have to prove it. The goodwill that came with his arrival is all but gone and this team is seemingly back in the same sort of rut that defined it in the Copa America crash out last summer. Pochettino must chart a path forward, and that, ultimately, will define his time in charge of this team.

Lopetegui must unleash "old fashioned" West Ham ace for 1st PL start

West Ham United have been languishing in 14th in the Premier League for weeks, with four wins, four losses and two draws in their last ten games.

Julen Lopetegui has been under pressure to deliver results, whilst also trying to fully implement his own style of play, averaging 47.0% possession and 15.1 shots per game.

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

Whilst many metrics have improved, the Hammers are still conceding 16.8 shots per game (fourth most in the division) and their pressing has been highly exploited, something they will have to fix against Brighton and Hove Albion if they are to get a result.

West Ham's defensive issues

The Hammers have conceded 29 goals this season, with only four Premier League sides conceding more. A lack of athleticism in midfield mixed with their disjointed pressing patterns has allowed teams to easily manipulate Lopetegui’s side.

Where West Ham look to press high with their front line, there is often a big gap between their midfield/defensive line and the forwards. Teams have easily played through the initial line of pressure, allowing them to attack the West Ham back line (four defenders and a defensive midfielder).

If Lopetegui plans to stick with this pressing system, the main fix will have to be acquiring a midfielder who can effectively cover ground.

However, there is one change the Hammers boss can make for their next game, which will improve the attack rather than the defence.

The West Ham star who must be unleashed

In the summer transfer window, West Ham signed Niclas Füllkrug from Borussia Dortmund, for a fee of around £27m. The German scored 16 goals and provided ten assists for Dortmund last season, making 46 appearances in all competitions.

However, since joining the Hammers, Fullkrug has been sidelined through injury, meaning he is yet to make a start in the Premier League, and Lopetegui could unleash the “old-fashioned” striker, as dubbed by Ally McCoist, against Brighton this weekend.

In comparison to the absent Michail Antonio, Fullkrug brings added physicality in the penalty area, using his 6 foot 2 frame to bully defenders, secure the ball and link play in the box, as well as winning aerial duels to sustain pressure and score from crossing opportunities.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The 31-year-old German is more clinical than Antonio, having 0.13 goals/shot ratio compared to Antonio’s 0.05, and also provides more key passes, linking play and creating shots for his teammates, providing 0.25 assists per 90.

However, Antonio does bring more progressive carrying to the side, and a willingness to run the channels, but this can be made up for by Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.

Lopetegui can finally look to unleash Fullkrug upfront, giving the Hammers a focal point through the middle, helping to bring more goals, box threat and get the best out of others, allowing the likes of Bowen and Kudus to play off of the big man.

Such an outlet could be vital up against a Seagulls side who shipped three at home to Crystal Palace last time out.

Arteta’s own Mbappe: Arsenal plot move for "one of Europe’s best forwards"

The last few weeks have been a challenge for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, having to replace the creativity of the injured Bukayo Saka within the final third.

The Englishman has scored five and registered ten assists in his 16 Premier League appearances, but after surgery on his hamstring, he’s set to be missing until at least March – massively denting the Gunners’ title ambitions.

Ethan Nwaneri has attempted to fill the void in recent outings, scoring in the draw with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday night – bagging his second top-flight goal of his professional career.

As for the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard they have often shared the attacking roles but have struggled to replicate the performance levels of the injured academy graduate.

Such form could see the hierarchy dip into the transfer market to try and bolster Arteta’s side to aid their title ambitions, with one player already on their radar after the opening of the transfer window this week.

Arsenal in the race to sign 18-goal forward in January

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are one of a number of English sides in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush before the end of the ongoing window.

However, Manchester City and Liverpool are said to hold the advantage at this stage, with Aston Villa, Newcastle and Chelsea also monitoring the Egyptian’s progress.

The 25-year-old is currently enjoying the best season of his professional career to date, scoring 18 times and registering 11 assists in just 24 matches – only behind Harry Kane in the Bundesliga goalscoring charts.

As a result of his recent form, the German side are demanding a fee in the region of €70m (£58m) to part ways with their star forward, but it remains to be seen if any side is willing to meet such a price tag.

However, given his form, it could be a potential bargain, leading to comparisons to one of Europe’s leading talents over the past couple of months.

Why Marmoush could be Arteta’s very own Mbappe

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has cemented himself as one of the biggest stars in world football over the last couple of years after his impressive form within the attacking third.

The 26-year-old has notched 14 goals in his first year in Spain after joining the European giants on a free transfer from PSG over the summer, following his unheard-of goal record during his spell at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappé registered 235 goals in 264 appearances for the Parisians, whilst also managing a hat-trick in the World Cup final back in 2022, becoming only the second player in football history to manage such a feat.

Arsenal would undoubtedly love to have a player of Mbappé’s quality, but a move for Marmoush could allow them to sign a player of similar level, especially when delving into his underlying figures from 2024/25.

As a result of the Egyptian’s performances, he’s been dubbed as one of the most similar players in Europe’s top five leagues to the Real Madrid ace by FBref, with the Frankfurt talisman even outperforming the Frenchman in various areas since the start of the campaign.

Like Mbappe, the Egypt forward possesses plenty of pace and ability to beat his man. That said, Marmoush, who’s recently been dubbed as “one of Europe’s best forwards” by analyst David Segar, has managed more combined goals and assists than the French international – also averaging a better goal per shot on target rate – highlighting his clinical nature in the final third.

He’s also completed more take-ons and won more aerials per 90, offering that all-round centre-forward that Arteta and the Gunners have been craving over the last couple of seasons.

It may be a risky move splashing nearly £60m on a player who’s currently enjoying a purple patch, potentially running the risk of the attacker being unable to sustain his recent performance levels.

However, Marmoush has showcased that he’s able to better some of the very best talents in Europe, which could dramatically improve the club’s forward line in their pursuit of ending a two-decade wait for a league triumph.

With City currently ahead in the race for his signature, the Gunners hierarchy need to act swiftly to prevent missing out on the 25-year-old and subsequently improving one of their main rivals.

Fernandes has been one of the best players in the Premier League over the course of the last few years, despite Manchester United having struggled for form and stability. Over the last few months, reports have suggested that the Portuguese midfielder is desperate to win major titles and could leave the Red Devils to do so.

Fernandes has been linked with a move to 15-time European champions Real Madrid as Los Blancos look to improve their midfield ahead of next season. However, Manchester United boss Amorim has now insisted that the Red Devils captain will not leave the club in the summer while stressing his importance to the squad.

Getty Images SportWHAT AMORIM SAID

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: “No, it’s [move to Real Madrid] not going to happen."

On Fernandes wanting to win titles, he added: "That is the challenge. I want Bruno here because we want to win the Premier League again, so we want the best players. He’s [30] but still so [fit], plays 55 games every season and between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 at least, so he’s not going anywhere.

"We are in control of the situation and I feel that he is really happy here. Sometimes, the frustration that everybody sees and [they] maybe say is not a good thing in a captain, but it’s a sign he wants this [success] so bad. He’s not going anywhere because I’ve already told him.”

WHAT NEXT FOR FERNANDES?

Fernandes has continued to perform at a high level for the Red Devils this season, and he will aim to deliver again as they chase glory in the Europa League. United will return to action on Tuesday night in the Premier League when they face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Who could replace Ange Postecoglou? 5 managers fit for the Spurs job

Tottenham Hotspur’s up-and-down season has left Ange Postecoglou’s job hanging by a thread, but victory in the Europa League final may change all that.

While the Australian has had injury issues to deal with throughout the season, the Spurs boss has presided over an awful league campaign and has faced criticism for his unwillingness to compromise on his attacking principles.

In fact, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher went as far as to say Postecoglou will not remain in his job next season if he doesn’t change his style of play.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at five potential replacements for the Spurs boss:

Could there be activity through the exit door in N17 this winter?

ByDominic Lund Dec 31, 2024 5 Mauricio Pochettino Ex-Tottenham manager

Invariably, whenever there is discussion over the future of a Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino ends up being linked with the job, and that is no surprise given he guided the club to the final of the Champions League in 2019.

Since being sacked by Spurs, Pochettino has continued to impress in his following managerial roles, winning Ligue 1 and the French Cup with Paris Saint-Germain before guiding Chelsea to a sixth-placed finish last season.

However, the 52-year-old may well have burned his bridges with the fans that used to adore him by taking the job at Stamford Bridge, which makes him an unlikely candidate for the job.

The former Tottenham boss is also currently the manager of the United States and he will be focused on the 2026 World Cup, so a return to north London doesn’t make sense for any party.

Juventus coach MassimilianoAllegricelebrates with the trophy after winning the Coppa Italia final

Massimiliano Allegri is known to have rejected a move to Tottenham in the past, but there have recently been calls for the Italian to replace Postecoglou – and there is some evidence he could be a smart appointment.

The 57-year-old has a proven track record of success in his home country, having won six Serie A titles, three Italian Cups and five Italian Super Cups across spells with Milan and Juventus.

Spurs desperately need to win a trophy of any description, having not lifted silverware since their League Cup triumph in 2008, and Allegri’s history indicates he could bring success to the club.

However, Daniel Levy has been down this road before, appointing supposed born winners in Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, with neither able to reach the heights expected of them.

Allegri is also well-known to play a more defensive style of football, which would be a major change in tactics from Postecoglou’s attacking focus, meaning the players may struggle to adapt in the second half of the season.

3 Kieran McKenna Guided Ipswich to unlikely promotion

Ipswich Town managerKieranMcKennaapplauds fans after the match

Kieran McKenna’s stock has risen dramatically over the past few years, having led Ipswich Town to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, and he has been tipped to replace Postecoglou at Tottenham.

Back in December, Spanish sources reported that McKenna was the leading candidate to replace the Australian, and there are plenty of signs that he could do a stellar job in north London.

Ipswich were always expected to be in a relegation battle this season, but if they are to go down, it won’t be without a fight, having picked up impressive victories over the likes of Spurs and Chelsea.

A relegation by a tight margin would not be a blemish on McKenna’s record, given how monumental the task of keeping the Tractor Boys in the Premier League is, but he may be keen to move to a top club while his stock is still high.

Having made a name for himself as an attack-minded coach, the 38-year-old may not need much time to implement his philosophy at N17, and his age means he could be a long-term success in north London.

2 Edin Terzic Managed last season's Champions League finalists

Borussia Dortmund coachEdinTerziclooks dejected after the match

Serdal Adali, one of the candidates to be the next president of Besiktas, recently made an interesting claim in the media, asserting that Edin Terzic is “expecting an agreement” to become the new Tottenham manager.

It remains to be seen whether there is any truth behind Adali’s comments, but Terzic could be an exciting appointment for Spurs, given what he achieved at previous club Borussia Dortmund.

The 42-year-old led the German side to the Champions League final last season before coming up just short against Real Madrid, and he is another young coach who likes to implement an attractive brand of football.

Tottenham now holding internal talks over signing £202k-p/w ace in January

It would be a massive statement of intent from Postecoglou.

2 ByBen Browning Jan 6, 2025

The former Dortmund boss said: “There are many lessons I have learned… I found out that sometimes it’s not enough to score one more goal. It’s not only about winning; it’s also about winning in style. Now I’m thinking about winning with two goals more than the opposition.

“Like every coach, I want my team to be dominant, active, and play attractive football – to entertain and be successful.”

Terzic seems to share Postecoglou’s view that entertaining the fans is fundamental, alongside getting results, and he could be an exciting and low-cost appointment for Spurs given that he is currently without a club.

1 Thomas Frank Continuing to impress at Brentford

Brentford managerThomasFrank

If the rumours are to be believed, Tottenham are looking at up-and-coming managers with an exciting brand of football as potential Postecoglou replacements, and Thomas Frank ticks both of those boxes.

Former Tottenham CEO Claude Littner recently called for the Brentford manager to be brought in, describing him as an “ambitious” coach, and his record at Brentford speaks for itself.

Not only did Frank take the Bees up from the Championship, but he has also made them a solid Premier League side, and their home record is one of the best in the league.

That is despite losing Ivan Toney, highlighting exactly why the Dane is the second-longest-serving manager in the league behind Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.

The 8 longest-serving managers in the Premier League & EFL

A rare sight in football…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 8, 2024

Guardiola has heaped praise upon his fellow manager in the past, admitting it won’t be long before he’s snapped up by a top European club: “It is just a question of time.

“I’m good in a few things, one of which is reading when the manager is good. It is going to happen.”

With Brentford performing well again this season, Tottenham may have to move quickly to ensure Frank doesn’t end up elsewhere, but they are likely to give their current manager a little while longer in the dugout.

David Ornstein has insisted that Postecoglou remains safe for the time being, but things can change quickly in football, and he could find himself in danger if he fails to turn around Spurs’ poor run of form soon.

Villa team-mate Youri Tielemans has attempted to calm the situation and admits he has no problem if the PSG fans want to take aim at Martinez, as long as it does not cross the line. He said: "It's probably his style. All I can say is that he is ready for the game and he hasn't spoken anything differently. He's looking forward to it. I don't care [about the reception he gets]. How India-Pakistan changed everything for Lancashire chief

“It was after that India vs Pakistan game that we thought, ‘We really need to look east’,” said Gidney. “We started to think hard about how we were going to engage our Indian fans.”You saw how much they loved that game, and we thought, ‘Do you know what? We need to make Emirates Old Trafford in-game and out-of-game exciting so that Indian fans want to come here and watch’. We want to become every Indian’s second team.”At the moment, we are streaming all our games live on the Jio and FanCode Platforms in India. I think we are the only county to be doing that. Forty percent of our YouTube views are from India, so we are on a journey of engagement with our Indian audience.”You have a population of 1.2 billion people who love their cricket. Why wouldn’t we do that?”Lancashire have established Dubai as their main base for pre-season tours over the last decade and a half, though they did spend a week training at Reliance Park in Mumbai in February 2020 – immediately before Covid struck.”That training camp was amazing,” Gidney said. “We’d definitely like to do part of next season’s pre-season tour out in India, and we’re looking at that at the moment.”And as for more Indian arrivals to follow Washington, that could be extended to the Thunder squad for women’s domestic cricket.”It’s something we’ll definitely look at,” Gidney said. “When Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone get picked up in the women’s IPL next year, I’ll get them to do some scouting for us!”

PL rivals want him: Forest could face awful Johnson repeat over £60m star

Nottingham Forest’s side that won promotion back to the Premier League in the 2021/22 season will live long in the memory of their supporters.

Although much of that team now plays elsewhere, the men in Garibaldi Red that season wrote their names in the history books as the side who returned the Midlands club to the Premier League.

Despite struggling at the start of the campaign, Forest, managed by Steve Cooper, ended up finishing fourth in the second tier of English football. In the playoff final, the East Midlands outfit beat Huddersfield Town at Wembley to secure Premier League status again.

One of the standout players for Forest that year was Brennan Johnson.

Brennan Johnson’s Forest career

23-year-old winger Johnson came through the ranks at the City Ground. After a loan spell at Lincoln City, he eventually broke into the first team at Forest and became a crucial player, helping the club to promotion in 2021/22.

In total, the Welshman played 109 times for the club, scoring 29 goals and grabbing 12 assists. In the promotion season, his 16 goals and two assists in 46 Championship games, and two goals in three playoff games, ensured he could help bring his boyhood club back to the top flight of English football.

It is fair to say that, in his first season as a Premier League footballer, the Wales international impressed. He scored eight goals and grabbed three assists in 38 games as Forest survived by the skin of their teeth. He scored some crucial goals, but perhaps none more so than both strikes in a 2-0 win at home to Leicester City, who ended up being relegated themselves.

Sadly for Forest fans, he left his boyhood club for pastures anew on deadline day in 2023. Tottenham Hotspur paid £47.5m to sign Johnson from Forest, which was a record sale for the club.

There is no doubt it was a big loss for the East Midlands side, and they could be in danger of losing another star for perhaps an even bigger fee.

The £60m star who Forest could lose

According to a report last week from the Mail, Morgan Gibbs-White is someone who is of ‘keen interest’ to several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

At this stage, a price is not clear should a deal materialise. However, Gibbs-White was valued at a reported £60m over the summer, with the club likely looking to make a profit on their initial investment.

There is no doubt that losing Johnson was a disappointing thing for Forest, even if the club did not stand in his way when the right price arrived. Losing Gibbs-White, however, could arguably be even worse.

He is the main man in a side flying this season under Nuno Espirito Santo. Forest are currently third in the Premier League on 40 points, the same amount as second place Arsenal and just six points off leaders Liverpool.

Their most recent win was a 3-0 thrashing away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

There is no doubt that Gibbs-White’s four goals and three assists in 16 games are a big reason for that form. Initially, the 24-year-old started the season slowly, with just one goal in his first ten appearances.

However, in the last six games, he has really kicked on, with an impressive six goals and assists in his last six games. It is certainly no coincidence that his electric form has coincided with Forest winning six games in a row.

Losing a man with 15 goals and 21 assists in 96 games across competitions would be a huge blow for Nuno and his squad. Those donning Garibaldi Red this season are doing an exceptional job, spearheaded by Gibbs-White.

It was never going to be easy to replace Johnson, yet Forest have found a man who is filling the boots of his former teammate pretty well, to say the least.

The last thing they need is for Gibbs-White to leave, meaning they would lose another of their talismanic attackers.

He has already sat out domestic and CONCACAF Champions Cup fixtures in 2025, with a chronic leg muscle injury being carefully managed. Messi has, however, played the full 90 minutes in back-to-back matches with LAFC and Toronto FC.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ex-United States international McCarty believes that Javier Mascherano needs to continue rotating his squad in order to compete on multiple fronts – which means that more brave calls need to be made when it comes to Messi’s game time.

GettyWHAT EX-USMNT & MLS STAR SAID

McCarty, who earned 13 caps for the USMNT and represented the likes of the New York Red Bulls and Nashville SC in his playing days, has told : “I just still think if Inter Miami wants to win every competition they're in, you give yourself a better chance to beat LAFC with Lionel Messi coming off after 60 minutes (against Toronto) and getting fresh legs on the field.

“Listen, it's a tough balance to follow, but against a Toronto FC team I think you should beat comfortably, I thought Messi should have come off.”
